Can you wear your whitening trays for too long? Does this cause enamel damage?

Asked more than five years ago by Carl23

I accidentally fell asleep with my whitening trays and had them on the entire night. Could it potentially cause damage? Please advise.

 ANSWER

You may not get enamel damage, but you might over bleach or experience severe sensitivity if you are using a high concentration bleaching gel; but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do something in the event you wear your trays for too long or fall asleep with them on. Try a remineralizing toothpaste of mouth rinse - these restore some of the minerals in tooth enamel and could help if they’re absorbed into your teeth. If you’re a frequent teeth whitener, it’s probably not a bad idea to use one anyway.
