Oral B ProfessionalCare 1000 Review

The ProfessionalCare 1000 electric toothbrush is produced by Oral-B, one of the most dentist recommended brands in the world. The ProfessionalCare 1000 is a mid-range electronic toothbrush that is a step up from the Oral-B Vitality Dual Clean Brush. It is the first of 4 in the Oral-B ProfessionalCare series of brushes.

The ProfessionalCare 1000 features a dentist inspired, round, cup-shaped brushing head. An interesting feature on this model is that it also includes a pressure sensor to help alert you if you are brushing your teeth too hard. Because scrubbing too hard causes toothbrush abrasion, this feature helps those consumers break the bad habit.

A feature we also really like is the built in 2-minute timer that includes 30-second intervals. The timer encourages people to brush for the amount of time that dentists recommend, while the 30-second interval keeps users brushing evenly over the 4 quadrants in their mouth.

Depending on your personal oral care needs, additional brush heads can be purchased that are compatible with this toothbrush. We really like that there are a wide range of options when it comes to selecting optional brush heads. Ones worth mentioning are the Orthodontic and Braces tips, which are designed to reach between brackets, and the tongue freshener tip. The majority of bad-breath-causing bacteria harbors on the tongue, so having a tip just for that is great if you’re suffering from halitosis or just like that extra clean feeling.  The brush tips range from $5-10 a piece and should last you about 3 months before they are due to replace.

Brush heads types compatible with this brush:

Oral-B Precision Clean – Superior tooth cupping and more bristles

Oral-B Dual Clean – Two moving heads

Oral-B Sensitive Clean – Extra soft bristles

Oral-B Power Tip – Especially designed to clean around dental work

Oral-B Ortho – Designed for Braces

How does it work?

The most exciting feature of the ProfessionalCare 1000 is the dual action Precision Clean Brush Head, which has a Cleaning Action of 40,000 pulsations and 8,800 oscillations per minute. You’re not only getting the rotary movement of the electric brush, but you’re also getting a pulsating in and out of the bristles as well. This brush can remove up to 97% of plaque in hard to reach areas that you might not get with a manual toothbrush. The round brush head works to cup the tooth and encourage time spent on each individual tooth’s surfaces.

The Pressure Sensor works to help users break existing habits of brushing their teeth too hard. The sensor stops pulsations to notify you if you’re brushing too hard. This is important because toothbrush abrasion is damaging to teeth and can cause sensitivity and gum recession. Unfortunately some consumer reviews report that the sensor is not very accurate and may not cut off unless excess force is applied to the brush.

Dentists and dental hygienists really like the Professional Timer, which encourages the user to make sure they are brushing for a minimum of 2 minutes. The brush has alerts users every 30 seconds so that they can focus on one quadrant of their mouth at a time. This aids the users to make sure they are brushing more evenly over the mouth and not neglecting any areas.

The Rechargeable Battery is designed to last up to 2 weeks between charges, making it good for overnight or business trips. Having a small Portable SmartPlug Charger also means it takes up a small amount of counter space and makes it easy to pack away.

While one brush head is included in the box, Multiple attachment brush heads are available for this model brush. This means that users aren’t restricted to only what’s in the box, but can pick up an additional tip or two depending on what their own oral health care needs are. Their compact, round designs encourage users to care for each tooth individually, as the shape gently cups around one tooth at a time. Indicator® Bristles fade halfway when the brush head is due to replace, after about 3 months.

There is only one Customized Brushing Mode for the ProfessionalCare 1000, which is the Daily Clean mode. This mode is fine for most people, but for users who want the option to adjust their brush to different power levels, like people who have sensitive teeth, they may want to upgrade to a more advanced brush. On the handle is a Charge Indicator that lets users know when the brush is charged or needs to be charged.

Cleaning Action
The ProfessionalCare 1000 provides 40,000 pulsations and 8,800 oscillations per minute. This is way more than you’re going to get using an old manual toothbrush! The pace at which this brush delivers movement to the toothbrush bristles makes it much more effective when it comes to removing plaque from the teeth and gumlines. Studies show it removes up to 97% of plaque. This is great for patients who need to improve their oral hygiene or are suffering from gum disease. Because this brush is so efficient it can help patients gain control over their oral health. While it does not have all of the bells and whistles of higher end Oral-B ProfessionalCare brushes, the cleaning capabilities are the same.

Professional Timer
If you tend to brush too quickly or don’t spend enough time in certain areas of your mouth, the timer feature of the ProfessionalCare 1000 is great. Rarely does anyone spend a full 2 minutes brushing their teeth, but studies have shown with timers build in to the toothbrush that most people will comply with them.  This compacted with the efficient plaque removal of the dual action bristles helps users achieve the cleanest mouth possible.

Indicator Bristles
Who remembers to change their toothbrush out every 3 months? Many people don’t change it out except for twice a year when they visit their dentist. The indicator bristles on the brush head face down approximately 3 months after their first use, reminding users to replace it. Keeping your brush heads up to date also helps improve your oral hygiene!

What disadvantages does it have?

Pressure Sensor
We’re not quite sure whether or not to put this under the advantages or disadvantages. The theory behind it is great. So many people brush their teeth too hard that they actually abrade away the enamel and cause the gums to recede. The Pressure Sensor helps to break this habit, which is a wonderful feature. Unfortunately, there are many consumer reports of the pressure sensor not working or requiring excess force before it kicks in. Because this is a common complaint, we’re going to list this under the disadvantages.

One Mode
Unlike the higher end ProfessionalCare models, the 1000 only offers one cleaning mode. For some users this is an issue because of sensitive teeth and gums, or areas that may need more power than others. If one mode is fine with you, then great!

Long Charge Time
Like many electronic pieces of equipment, it’s recommended that you allow the battery to fully drain itself before you recharge it. Consumers report that the battery of the ProfessionalCare 1000 takes a long time to recharge, as much as 17 hours. We recommend charging it overnight and while you’re away during the day.

The Bottom Line

At about $50 and a 60 day money-back guarantee, we think the Oral-B ProfessionalCare 1000 is a good buy. This mid range electric toothbrush will get you the same plaque control that a higher end Oral-B brush will, but with less bells and whistles. It’s proven plaque control is certainly one reason to invest in it rather than one of the lower end or entry level electric toothbrushes.
