Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 4000 Review

Oral-B toothbrushes are used and recommended by more dentists and hygienists than any other toothbrush brand in the world. The Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 4000 is one of Oral-B’s most elite electric toothbrushes, only to be surpassed by the ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000. The ProfessionalCare SmartSeries brushes by Oral-B are their most technologically advanced brushes that are designed for ultimate plaque removal.

The ProfessionalCare line is designed with a dentist’s polishing cup in mind. The cup shaped bristle head makes for optimized plaque removal by encouraging users to focus their attention on one tooth at a time, while the brush hugs the shape of the tooth, while also targeting the plaque at the gumlines. Gumline plaque often leads to progressed gingivitis and gum disease, so this area is very important to keep clean.

The ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 4000 is proven to be more efficient at removing plaque than the Sonicare FlexCare toothbrush. Like the other brushes in the ProfessionalCare line, it includes a pressure sensor to alert users if they are brushing too hard (a common cause of damage to the teeth and gums) and a built in 2 minute timer with 30 second increments.

This model takes it a step farther and includes 4 different cleaning modes, which include whitening, deep clean, daily clean and sensitive. The whitening mode offers whitening and polishing evident after just 3 weeks of use.

This brush comes with the Oral-B FlossAction brush head. We like this brush head because it targets interdental plaque and food debris that is so often overlooked. While flossing is recommended daily, most people just won’t do it. The FlossAction brush head takes brushing to a further level to help target the areas that are hardest to clean.

Oral-B produces additional brush heads that are compatible with this brush, depending on what oral care needs you have. The brush heads are about $5-10 to replace and are made to last 3 months before they are supposed to be changed out.

Brush heads types compatible with this brush:

Oral-B Floss Action – advanced cleaning between teeth.

Oral-B Pro White – Advanced whitening and polishing cup

Oral-B Sensitive Clean – Extra soft bristles

Oral-B Precision Clean – Superior tooth cupping and more bristles

Oral-B Dual Clean – Two moving heads

Oral-B Power Tip – Especially designed to clean around dental work

Oral-B Ortho – Designed for Braces

Oral-B Braces Care Essentials – Designed for braces

Oral-B Tongue Freshener – Removes bad breath bacteria

How does the Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 4000 work?

Oral-B ProfessionalCare series brushes use a Cleaning Action of 40,000 pulsations and 8,800 oscillations per minute. That along with the FlossAction Brush Head mean you’re going to have optimized results when it comes to removing interdental and gumline plaque. Gumline plaque often builds up and causes gingivitis and gum disease, so removing it efficiently is extremely important. We love Oral-B brushes in that they allow you to use one of many multiple attachment brush heads. Different brushes for different brushing needs allow users to target their oral hygiene. Indicator Bristles fade halfway down when they are approximately 3 months old and need to be replaced with a new brush head.

The 4 Customized Cleaning Modes allow users to adjust the brush’s action to target specific types of brushing needs. The Deep Clean Mode is shown to remove up to 99.7% of plaque from hard to reach areas. Dentists and hygienists love this, because it means dramatic improvement in oral hygiene. Other modes like the Sensitive Modeare a wonderful addition to the electric toothbrush line, because so many people suffer from tooth sensitivity that may be aggravated by an electronic toothbrush. The Whitening Mode helps remove surface stains from things like coffee, tea, red wine and smoke in just 3 weeks.

A Professional Timer encourages users to brush a full 2 minutes. Because some users may tend to brush in certain parts of their mouth longer than others, a 30 second interval timer alerts users to move to the next quadrant in their mouth. This encourages a more even brushing pattern and efficient plaque removal.

The LCD Display Screen works as a digital clock when it’s not in use. Otherwise it’s providing feedback like if you’re brushing too hard or if the brush is charged enough, with the Charge Indicator. The Pressure Sensor is a great concept because it is meant to help users break the habit of scrubbing their teeth too hard. Hard brushing can cause permanent tooth and gum damage. Unfortunately, many consumer reviews provide feedback that the sensor isn’t very accurate and that it may not work unless excess force is applied.

Users can replace the Rechargeable Battery within the toothbrush if the need ever arises. So many brushes don’t have this feature and require replacing the entire toothbrush. The battery lasts for up to 2 weeks between charges, which makes it a great option for those who travel.

The Base Station Toothbrush Holder is included in the box, but the small and compact Portable SmartPlug Charger is included as well. A Travel Toothbrush Case makes it easy to bring the entire toothbrush with you on trips away from home.

Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 4000 Advantages

Natural stains from coffee, tea and red wine cause superficial discoloring of tooth enamel. The ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 4000 is proven to whiten teeth in as little as 3 weeks. We think that’s pretty impressive.

Cleaning Modes
There are 4 cleaning modes on this toothbrush, and the Deep Clean mode is shown to remove up to 99.7% of plaque in hard to reach areas. This alone makes it worth buying. Plaque removal, or the lack thereof, is the biggest influence on gingivitis and gum disease. For patients who really want to ensure they are doing everything they can to clean their teeth properly, this tooth helps them achieve that. The fact that the FlossAction brush head also removes more plaque between teeth helps make up for the people that lack in the flossing department.

Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 4000 Disadvantages

Pressure Sensor
Many consumers report that the Pressure Sensor of the Oral-B ProfessionalCare Smart Series electric toothbrushes isn’t accurate or just doesn’t work. While we think the theory behind the sensor is wonderful, if it doesn’t work in a broad spectrum then it won’t help consumers break bad habits like brushing their teeth too hard. Hard brushing can cause gum recession and abrasion to tooth enamel. Many users report that the sensor won’t kick on unless they are applying severe force to the toothbrush head.

The Bottom Line

The ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 4000 runs about $100, making it one of the more expensive brushes in the market. But we think it’s worth it.

The Whitening action removes stains and makes teeth appear whiter in just 3 weeks. Brushing in the Deep Clean mode removes more than 99.7% of plaque.

Studies show that the additional pulsating technology helps improve the removal of plaque between teeth. (1)

The ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 4000 is a perfect option for those consumers who are interested in obtaining one of the best electronic toothbrushes available. It clearly is one of the winners when you want to do anything you can to improve your oral hygiene, gingivitis and gum disease.

How well it works

Lots of bells and whistles! Oral B 4000 series is wonderful in terms of settings. It lets you know every 30 seconds to change brushing to different parts of your mouth. After 2 minutes, a smiley face tells you, "Good job so far". It not only takes guess work out of over/under brushing but will also let you know if you are applying too much pressure on your teeth. The feeling of clean teeth is great!
