Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 Review

The Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 is the last and most advanced of the 4 brushes in the ProfessionalCare line. The SmartSeries electric toothbrushes are Oral-B’s most technologically advanced brushes and are designed for ultimate plaque removal and whitening. Their labor is not in vain, Oral-B toothbrushes are recommended more than any other brand by dentists and hygienists.

A dentist’s polishing cup was in mind when the ProfessionalCare line brush heads were created. The cup shaped brush head curves around each tooth for advanced plaque removal. The shape also encourages users to pay close attention to one tooth at a time while also cleaning areas like gumlines and between teeth, where plaque often goes unnoticed. Plaque left between the teeth and under the gums creates conditions like gingivitis and gum disease. Using the ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 helps to reduce those conditions and create a healthy mouth.

The 5000 is similar to the 4000 model, but with a few extra perks. The Oral-B 5000 has 5 cleansing modes, as opposed to 4. The new 5th mode is the “massage” mode, which we’re not really sure what it does other than to help provide extra stimulation for gums. Areas where there are no teeth such as under partials or dentures, or around orthodontic appliances may be good examples of places to use this feature. It is advised by dental professionals to brush around gums even if there are no teeth present, so we think this is the type of area the massage mode is targeting.

The ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 has a separate SmartGuide, which also doubles as a bathroom clock when not in use. The small portable screen displays the timer and a quadrant tracker to show what area of your mouth you should be brushing.

Like other ProfessionalCare brushes, the SmartSeries 5000 comes with the Oral-B FlossAction brush head. This head is shaped to specifically target plaque that is between teeth that causes decay and gum disease. Because gum health and oral hygiene are the primary reason for consumers to purchase an electric toothbrush, this is a great kit brush head to be included.

Several Oral-B brush heads are compatible with this brush. Because each person is different and has specific areas they are targeting, a wide range of designs is available. Brush heads are about $5-10 a piece and last approximately 3 months before they are due to be replaced.

Brush heads types compatible with this brush:

Oral-B Floss Action – advanced cleaning between teeth.

Oral-B Pro White – Advanced whitening and polishing cup

Oral-B Sensitive Clean – Extra soft bristles

Oral-B Precision Clean – Superior tooth cupping and more bristles

Oral-B Dual Clean – Two moving heads

Oral-B Power Tip – Especially designed to clean around dental work

Oral-B Ortho – Designed for Braces

Oral-B Braces Care Essentials – Designed for braces

Oral-B Tongue Freshener – Removes bad breath bacteria

How does the Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 Electric Toothbrush work?

The Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 Electric Toothbrush with SmartGuide takes Oral-B’s dedication to oral health to the ultimate extremes. The SmartGuide is a feature that separates it from the 4000 model. The SmartGuide has a built in 2-minute Professional Timer and a Quadrant prompt that flashes every 30 seconds on the area of the mouth that you should be brushing. This helps improve brushing thoroughness by 92%. Also included on the SmartGuide is the Pressure Sensor that lets users know if they are applying too much force to their teeth. Brushing too hard can cause abrasion of the enamel and gum recession, so the pressure sensor helps break the habit. There are numerous consumer reviews that state the pressure sensor is not very accurate and that only excess force triggers this alert.

The Whitening Mode works to remove superficial stain from tea, coffee and red wine. A Cleaning Action of 40,000 pulsations and 8,800 oscillations remove 99% of plaque…far more than you would ever be able to remove with the normal use of a manual toothbrush. Five Customized Cleaning Modes now feature the new 5th Massage mode not available in lower model Oral-B brushes. The Massage mode is a gentler setting that can be used on gums in the mouth that need a softer stimulation than a standard brushing mode. The Deep Clean mode is 3 minutes long and removes 99.7% of plaque from hard to reach areas. Stains are removed and within 3 weeks teeth are whiter with use of the Whitening Mode.

Teeth are hugged with the cup shaped FlossAction Brush Head, which is inspired by the polishing cups that dentists and hygienists use. Its unique shape hugs the tooth surface for an ultimate clean of each individual tooth. The FlossAction bristles target plaque between teeth, which is a common cause of decay and gum disease. Indicator Bristles fade halfway when they are due to be replaced, after about 3 months of use.

The Rechargeable Battery lasts for up to 2 weeks between charges. Many electronic manuals suggest allowing the battery to fully exhaust itself before it is recharged, to extend the life of the battery.

A countertop Charging Station takes up a little bit of room, but it has built in toothbrush head storage for multiple heads for multiple users. This makes it easier to share with a spouse, or to change out and find the brush you need if you’re targeting different areas each time you brush. The Portable SmartPlug Charger and Travel Toothbrush Case are easy to pack and make it easy to take your brush with you on trips, without worrying about the charging station.

Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 Advantages

The smart guide is a separate countertop piece that shows brushers how long they have been brushing and what area to focus on. Each 30 second quadrant flashes to show what area of the mouth you should be brushing in. It also alerts users if they are applying too much pressure when they brush, if the brush head needs to be replaced, or if the battery is low. When not in use, the SmartGuide doubles as a bathroom digital clock. Users of the SmartGuide have a 92% increase in brushing thoroughness.

5 Cleaning Modes
The SmartSeries 5000 has the most modes of all Oral-B toothbrushes, with the new 5th Massage mode. This setting lets patients “brush” their gum tissue in areas of the mouth where there may not be teeth, such as where a tooth is missing, or under partial. Your dentist will tell you that gums need to be stimulated too!

The Deep Clean mode takes cleaning a bit farther and lasts for 3 minutes as opposed to 2. Users of this mode are able to remove up to over 99% of plaque in hard to reach areas. If anything keeps your hygienist happy, that will.

Natural stains from coffee, tea and red wine cause superficial discoloring of tooth enamel. The ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 is proven to whiten teeth in as little as 3 weeks. It’s a safe and effective means to improve the color of your teeth.

Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 Disadvantages

Large A/C Adapter Base
The primary adapter base for charging this brush is fairly large. However, we can’t use that as an excuse because the portable charger is very compact and also comes with the kit. However, if you do find yourself using the primary base for charging the brush and housing your extra brush heads, it will take up a little more counter space than normal.

Heavy and Loud
Users of this brush state that they can feel the quality difference and because it is not cheaply made it seems a bit heavier. For users that have difficulty grasping or holding objects this may be an issue, but otherwise we don’t think it is.

Most electric toothbrushes are not going to be silent. There will take some getting used to the noise, which does tend to be referred up through the jawbone and seem louder once it is in your mouth.

Pressure Sensor
The Pressure Sensor is repeatedly the only feature in the ProfessionalCare SmartSeries brushes that consumers complain about. This feature tends to not be extremely reliable as many people state it just simply doesn’t work unless you apply excess force. We think it’s worth trying though, because brushing too hard is a very difficult habit to break and can cause severe damage to your teeth and gums.

The Bottom Line

The Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 toothbrush is one of the most elite toothbrushes produced by this manufacturer. It has all of the bells and whistles that you could possibly need when you’re looking to achieve the healthiest mouth possible.

Users of the 5000 have 34% less gum bleeding at 6-month appointments than users of manual toothbrushes. In only 3 months, 29% of users have less gum bleeding than people who use the Sonicare FlexCare toothbrush. The SmartGuide improves brushing thoroughness by 92% and reduces the force of brushing by 93%. This combined with 99% of plaque removal makes the ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 a top-notch toothbrush. When it comes to fighting gingivitis and gum disease, plaque removal is what really matters, and this brush helps achieve that.

Similar to other Oral-B toothbrushes, the Whitening action works to remove superficial stains on the teeth in as little as 3 weeks. For people who drink coffee and tea regularly, this can make a dramatic change in the appearance of their teeth.

The cost for the SmartSeries 5000 is about $100-125. It costs just a little more than the SmartSeries 4000 and has a few extra features, which makes the 5000 worth the additional investment if you’re obsessed with oral hygiene.

How well it works

LOVE this toothbrush. Makes teeth look and feel so clean. I don't find it too heavy or loud. It's $200 in Australia but got a discount with a chemist card. Well worth the money.

How well it works

I had purchased one for myself, but when my son tried it, he loved it. Our dentist said he can see a great improvement in our teeth after using this product compared to a regular toothbrush. The timer ideal for kids like my son- he just looks for the Happy Face and he knows he is done.. He even says that after using this, having his teeth cleaned at the dentist doesn’t hurt as much. It is a little high in price but worth it - at least for a family who tries to keep up with dental vists.
