Sonicare DiamondClean Review

The Sonicare DiamondClean (HX9332/05) rechargeable electric toothbrush uses some of the most advanced technology of any Sonicare toothbrushes. It also produces greater results in whitening and gum health than many of its competitors. In just 1-week teeth can appear whiter (removal of extrinsic stains), and gums are healthier in just 2 weeks.

Unique, diamond shape bristles replace the standard round bristles found in most toothbrush heads. The shape of the DiamondClean bristles allows the brush to remove more plaque and stain than a traditional bristle would. Because they have more surface area, they are able to work more productively. The bristles are also set into the brush in a different manner, allowing more bristles to be placed into the brush head. The standard brush head has 44% more bristles than previous Sonicare designs, and the compact brush head has 23% more bristles. The higher up into the brush head, the more dense and medium-stiff the bristles are. This is to achieve a more efficient clean for stains and deep between teeth.

Charging the DiamondClean is also very unique. There are 2 methods of charging for this model. The first is a unique “Charging Glass” which uses conductive technology allowing the brush to be charged by resting in the glass, which sets on top of a charging base. The glass can also be used to rinse your mouth. The charging glass helps make the appearance of the DiamondClean more elegant. The second charging method is a unique travel case that has a USB plug, allowing it to be used in a laptop to charge the DiamondClean during trips away from home. The brush battery holds a charge for up to 3 weeks, which is about a week longer than competitors.

Sonicare is one of the most recommended brands by dentists and hygienists. Sonicare toothbrushes use a patented sonic technology that produces 31,000 vibrations per minute which helps produce a flushing action between teeth and under gums.

How does the Sonicare DiamondClean work?

The Sonicare Diamond Clean brush is one of the sleekest, most high-tech toothbrushes ever produced by Sonicare. Its Ceramic White body has an ergonomic handle making it easy for anyone to hold. It charges by setting inside of a Charging Glass that adds style to your bathroom and also doubles as a cup to rinse your mouth. The glass works by conductive technology when it is placed on the charging base, which is plugged into the wall. For the first time ever, there is also a USB adaptable travel charging case. This means taking the brush on the go is always an option. The travel case holds the toothbrush body and heads inside of a sleek body. A Charging Indicator illuminates on the brush to show when it’s 3 week battery is holding power.

Diamond shaped bristles mean more effective cleaning because of their increased surface area, as opposed to standard round bristles. There are also more bristles than other model toothbrush heads, which get denser and medium-stiff higher into the brush. These features help the DiamondClean to whiten teeth in as little as 1 week. This works because the diamond shaped bristles make it more efficient to remove external stain from things like coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco.

There are 5 brushing modes on the DiamondClean brush. The Clean Mode is the standard mode that most users will need for normal brushing. White Mode helps remove external staining. Polish Mode lightens your teeth. Gum Care Mode helps improve the stimulation of gingival tissue to keep it healthy. Sensitive Mode is great for users with gum recession or who have more tender teeth where a standard mode is just a little too much for them.

Similar to other Sonicare models, the DiamondClean still features the 2-minute Smartimer, which encourages users to brush for the dentist recommended amount of time. The 30 second Quadpacer alerts user when to brush the next quadrant of their mouth. This improves brushing thoroughness and prevents users from skipping around the mouth, which could mean that they might miss some areas.

Sonicare DiamondClean Advantages

Plaque Removal
The DiamondClean removes up to 100% more plaque than a manual toothbrush. That means it can have a drastic impact on the health of your gums in just 2 weeks. Your hygienist will love that.

Whitening
In as little as one week, the DiamondClean can get the teeth whiter by more effectively removing extrinsic stains. This is 1 to 2 weeks quicker than many of its competitor toothbrushes.

USB Adapter
Yes, we know this is a little frilly, but face it…most tech savvy consumers that travel often are going to have their share of plugs to charge these types of devices. The DiamondClean USB plug means that not taking it on your business trip isn’t even a logical excuse.

3-Week Charge
The battery holds a charge for up to 3 weeks. This is one week longer than most other electric toothbrushes.

Sonicare DiamondClean Disadvantages

Lacking in the travel case design
While these are minor complaints, there are a few design issues with the travel case for the DiamondClean brush. For the brush to be stored, the heads must be removed prior to placing it in the case. This isn’t a huge deal, but if you’re traveling every day it can be bothersome. Also, there is no place to store the cord for the travel charger.

Cost
This is one of the most expensive electronic toothbrushes available for purchase. We know the cost is going to keep several people from being able to buy it, but if you have the money to burn it is certainly worth it.

The Bottom Line

Even though the DiamondClean does feature some medium-stiff bristles deeper into the brush head, studies show that the Diamond bristles were found to produce 50% less wear to the teeth than a manual toothbrush. If you’re prone to scrubbing too hard it can cause gum recession and tooth damage. Using a Sonicare DiamondClean can lessen your risk of this toothbrush abrasion.

Stain is removed within one week of use, much greater than competitors who say to wait 2 weeks. We believe this is because of the unique Diamond brush heads. They were found in a study to remove more plaque than not only a manual toothbrush, but also the Sonicare Flexcare.

This brush definitely makes a name for itself. If you want the best of the best and the most high-tech toothbrush Sonicare available….and you’re willing to part with a little over $200, then this is the one to get. Unfortunately the price is going to keep many consumers from even considering it. Maybe one day Sonicare will offer a diamond bristle design in one of it’s lower end models. For now though, you won’t be able to get as clean with any other Sonicare toothbrush as you are with the Sonicare DiamondClean.

Great toothbrush nice sleek design. Only has one button that controls all features. I would prefer two buttons one for on / off, one for modes. Everything else about the toothbrush is great. I did notice a difference within the first two weeks also.

I have periodontal problems. I can honestly say that the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 300 has made my teeth feel cleaner and look brighter than any prior brand I have used. There are five brushing modes that customize it to your particular dental hygiene needs-basic, white, polish, gum care or sensitive mode. The gum care mode works great for me.

It seems kind of bothersome, though, with regard to keeping it charged and recharged. But I guess thatís ok for how itís improved things. It also takes up alot of room - it has be stored between on the charger stand with a plastic covering so it is very tall and unwieldly. I have knocked it over once already but it didn't see to hurt the brush. And every three weeks, it has to be recharged in a special glass cup - and the recharge takes two hours.

It seems like more work than other models - but since itís helped my oral health, Iíll stick with it. I guess thatís the most important thing.
