Sonicare Xtreme Review

Sonicare is one of the most respected producers of electric toothbrushes. Dentists and hygienists recommend the Sonicare knowing that they are a great quality product that is proven to produce good results.

Sonicare toothbrushes use a Patented Sonic Technology that produces 31,000 vibrations per minute. That’s over 500 a second! The vibration of the bristles produces oxygen rich foam which blasts it’s way between teeth and under gumlines to flush away bacteria that can cause gingivitis, gum disease and tooth decay.

The Sonicare Xtreme (e3000 [HX3351]) electric toothbrush is a sonic toothbrush targeted at pre-teen and teenage consumers. Because this age group often has poor oral hygiene, the Xtreme can help them achieve dramatic results when it comes to brushing. The Sonicare Xtreme is also designed to effectively remove plaque from around braces, brackets and wires. Any orthodontist, dentist or hygienist will tell you how important it is for children with braces to be extremely devoted to their oral care. The Xtreme helps make that a possibility.

Because the Xtreme is an entry-level toothbrush, it makes it an affordable option for parents to purchase for multiple children. Even though it is geared toward youths, it is also acceptable for an adult to use, making it an economic option that can also bring the added benefits of the respected Sonicare brand.

Brush heads types compatible with Sonicare Xtreme:
Sonicare E-series Sonic brush heads are compatible with the Xtreme sonic toothbrush. These brush heads come in a standard and compact size, which make using the Xtreme appropriate for all sizes of mouths.

Toothbrush heads are a screw on and off style, and are color-coded allowing multiple users to use the same toothbrush body with their own head. The E-series brush heads do not come on and off as easily as the newer model Sonicare brush heads, so for smaller children this isn’t very convenient.

The E-series brush heads feature Reminder Bristles that fade when it’s time to be replaced. Brush heads are meant to change out about every 3 months. Using a brush head on braces and orthodontic appliances causes the bristles to wear out quicker. You can purchase replacement E-series brush heads in a pack of 2 for about $22-30.

How does the Sonicare Xtreme work?

Patented Sonic Technology creates over 30,000 vibrations per minute with the Sonicare brush head. Using the Xtreme sonic toothbrush creates a Dynamic Fluid Cleaning Action that flushes it’s way between teeth and under the gumlines.  You can see a sample video of this flushing action here.  This is one advantage over a rotary toothbrush, in that the Sonicare toothbrushes can essentially reach farther than where their bristles end.

Clinical studies show that preteens and teens that use a Sonicare Xtreme remove more plaque than when they used a manual toothbrush.

The Xtreme is designed especially for preteens and teens and is safe for use on braces. Because it uses E-brush heads with soft bristles and has one mode it makes it easy and gentle for any user. The heads are color coded so that they can be changes out should multiple users want to share the same brush.  Because the brush heads are slim and angled it helps the user to reach all areas in the mouth.

Reminder bristles show when a brush head needs to be replaced. Brush heads last for about 3 months, but if used on braces and brackets they will need to be replaced more often. A 2-minute Smartimer beeps to alert when the user has brushed for the full dentist-recommended time of 2 minutes. This alert can help increase compliance as serves as an encouragement to the user to keep using the brush until the timer goes off.

Because the Sonicare Xtreme Uses 2 AA Batteries, the brush is portable and takes up less counter space. Batteries are included with the brush and last for approximately 80-100 uses. There is however a possible design flaw with the battery compartment that causes the batteries to become wet and corrode, resulting in toothbrush failure if the brush is not kept dry.

Sonicare Xtreme Advantages

The Sonicare Xtreme is one of the most affordable entry-level brushes in the Sonicare product line.

Sonic technology
Sonicare toothbrushes vibrate 31,000 times per minute. This produces a fluid cleaning action that can flush bacteria out from underneath the gumlines and between teeth.

Battery Powered
The portability of a battery powered toothbrush means that it takes up less counter space and also makes it ideal for traveling. Yes, the cost of batteries can add up, but many users of electronic devices now prefer to use rechargeable batteries and own a home charger.

Preteens and teens (and even adults) rarely brush the full dentist and hygienist recommended time of 2-minutes. The built in Smartimer of the Sonicare line alerts the user when they have completed 2 minutes of brushing. This helps patients be more compliant with their brushing and can improve oral hygiene.

Optional Brush Head
While there are not many to choose from, the Xtreme can use the Standard or Compact e-series brush heads. This is a benefit for users who may have smaller mouths.

Sonicare Xtreme Disadvantages

Leaky Battery Compartment
There is no short supply of consumers who complain about the battery compartment on the Sonicare Xtreme. For some users the seal at the bottom of the brush lets water in and corrosion occurs. After several uses the brush stops working. We’re not sure if these users are not tightening up their compartment enough when initially installing the batteries, or if the brush is left in an area where it is allowed to get wet. Be sure to keep your cap tightly sealed and to not submerse the brush in water, or leave it sitting in an area where water may pool. It would probably help to dry it off after each use.

One Mode
The entry-level Sonicare Xtreme does not have any optional modes to function in.

Not Rechargeable
As we mentioned in the advantages, this brush uses batteries. We recommend using rechargeable batteries with a home charger to reduce the cost of replacing them so often.

Lower quality
Because the Sonicare Xtreme is an entry-level brush, it was made to be economical. It also feels that way. It doesn’t feel as sturdy as higher end models. But do you want to spend a lot of money on a brush that your teenager might not even use?

Difficult to Keep the Brush Heads Clean
The Sonicare E-series brush heads are more difficult to change out and keep clean than the newer models of Sonicare toothbrush heads. The E-series heads screw on and tend to collect build up along the seam. Newer models snap on making them easier to keep clean and to change out between additional users.

The Bottom Line

If dentists and hygienists had their way, they would have all of their patients using an electric toothbrush. The Sonicare brand is well respected and their Sonic Technology offers a unique cleaning action that rotary brushes do not. The price of the Sonicare Xtreme makes this one of the more economic electric toothbrushes once you get past the cheap (and usually rough) over the counter ones. It’s obviously much better to use than a manual toothbrush.

Because it is targeted at teens and pre-teens doesn’t mean that adults can’t use it, but it does mean you can help your child brush better with an electric toothbrush that will work specifically for them. Using an electric toothbrush especially when you are in braces can have a huge impact on the health of your teeth. If your child doesn’t use it, then not much money was wasted on a more advanced and expensive Sonicare model. It’s a small gamble.

Because the Sonicare Xtreme has obvious problems with the seal on the battery compartment, make sure you try to take special care to keep it dry on this area of the brush. Submersing it in water or having saliva and toothpaste pool around the base is sure to encourage leaking and corrosion of the battery compartment. Taking extra care to keep this area dry and sealed tightly will help extend the life of your toothbrush. It is a cheaper model though, so the quality is not going to be as good as those of higher end Sonicare models.

We like this brush for consumers who want to have an efficient electric toothbrush but aren’t able to afford a more advanced model. It’s obviously an entry level brush but it will offer a better clean compared to a manual brush or cheap battery powered brushes because of it’s Sonic Technology. Perhaps use it while you are saving up for a more advanced model when this one gives out. For parents with children, we think the Sonicare Xtreme model brush is a great investment for their teeth, and your wallet. Sonicare Xtreme models retail for approximately $30.

How well it works

My dentist told me I needed a better electric toothbrush, but the one she recommended was too expensive. So, I found this one (which seemed a fair price) and ordered it online for my husband and me. He wasn’t interested–but I told him the dentist said it was important. And, anyway, now, we both brush our teeth more! What a surprise. It truly is just like you've been to the dentist for a cleaning. I love running my tongue over my teeth after I've used it. We LOVE this model. They’re great for going someplace, too, because they work on batteries. Highly recommend this toothbrush. My dentist has told me how much better my teeth and gums look now.
