Aquafresh White Trays Review

The Aqufresh Whitening tray is the newest over-the-counter whitening product to hit store shelves. The product is made up of disposable pre-filled trays that fit over the top and bottom teeth. The Hydrogen Peroxide percentage in the bleaching gel is 10%. The unique flexible structure of the tray allows it to fit snug in the front and back of the teeth. By covering both sides, the bleaching gel is able to cover a lot of surface area, making it one of the most effective over-the-counter whitening products on the market.

What does the Aquafresh White Tray Package contain?

Each Package delivers 7 days worth of whitening treatment. The package contains trays for the top and bottom of teeth.

Do Aquafresh White Trays work?

Yes, you should see results with this product. If you have used whitening strips in the past, then you will definitely see results with the Aquafresh White Trays. Whitening strips tend to cover a small portion of the smile arch while also having slippage. The aqua fresh whitening trays cover more teeth than whitening strips and are kept secure on the teeth.

What are the disadvantages of the Aquafresh White Trays?

The disposable trays are effective, but they are never better than a custom mold tray of your own teeth. A custom mold will ensure that the tray fits perfect in your mouth and covers all teeth. Since the Aquafresh White Tray has a predetermined size to fit the “average mouth” , you will likely notice that it does not cover all your teeth. So if you have a Julia Robert’s smile (you show all your teeth), you might be better off with a custom solution. To get a custom tray, you would have to go see a dentist. Expect to pay several hundred dollars for this.

Update: We contacted Aquafresh to find out the Hydrogen Peroxide concentration but received a bogus answer:

This percent of hydrogen peroxide is proprietary information. The gel releases active oxygen which interacts with the stains below the surface of your teeth. The result of removing these deep stains is whiter teeth. Aquafresh® White Trays™ are professionally designed pre-dosed trays prefilled with a whitening ingredient used by dentists.
This is the first whitening product we have seen come to market that does not provide the hydrogen peroxide percentage. Consumers should know this information! So Aquafresh is the new guy on the “teeth whitening” block… it seems they need take a few lessons from Crest:

Lesson 1. Consumers are now looking for more information to help them make a clear and informed choice when purchasing teeth whitening products.
Lesson 2. Most progressive teeth whitening brands are already providing the hydrogen peroxide percentage that consumers are asking for.
Lesson 3. By improving the way information is provided, consumers can make positive choices and help the entire teeth whitening market meet the challenges of sustainability.

Update 5-12-2008 - We received confirmation that Hydrogen Peroxide Concentration is 10%

Update: A lot of people have commented that the Aquafresh White Tray Bleaching gel caused their gums to turn white and swell. It is important to note that this effect will happen when any kind of bleaching gel with hydrogen peroxide gets into contact with the gums. Although the “bleached gums” and soreness is temporary, one can smear Vitamin E liquid (from the gel caps) onto the affected area to promote fast healing.

Here are some things you can do to avoid the bleaching gel from inadvertently going onto your gums and irritating them:

  • After fitting the tray, wipe off excess bleach with a soft cloth.
  • Try applying Vaseline to your gums before bleaching.
  • Don’t brush your teeth before bleaching. Brushing causes tiny microabrasions in the gingiva (gums). Bleach will penetrate the acquired pellicle on the teeth so don’t worry about brushing first.
  • When you remove the trays, expectorate as much bleach as possible and rinse with water before brushing.

I am on day 6 and please listen when I tell you that I too have experienced tooth sensitivity and white swollen painful spots on my gums. I have also noticed that my teeth have become a little lighter; however, the very top of my top teeth and the very bottom of my bottom teeth are not as bright as the rest of the tooth area. Oh, and by the way, Aquafresh states that these trays are made to fit the "average" sized mouth...yeah, maybe an "average" sized two year old mouth. As for the foam and goop, it was very nasty...a small price to pay for whiter teeth. (that is if it worked for you) I do hope that these little white spots on my teeth go away. Overall, I think I will shop around to find a better alternative than these Aquafresh whitening trays. :(

I am using these right now as I type... and I am wishing that I had read these reviews earlier. These trays are pretty horrible. The Crest whitening strips are much easier to use. These trays do not stay put at all. The worst thing about them is that the excess gel balls up and floats around in your mouth. It's really quite disgusting. I had to take out the bottom tray already after only a few minutes because I was beginning to gag. I just could not get myself to swallow all the balls of gel floating around in my mouth. I will never purchase these again. These take one week... Crest's take one week. Crest's it is!

Absolutely the worst whitening agent I have tried thus far. Virtually no visable results, while having to swallow a lot of gunk! Gross!! I have minor stains between my teeth which this is doing absolutely nothing for. Crest whitestrips work much better. There is less of an immediate need to brush your teeth upon removal (compared to Crest), but that is about the only positive thing that I can say about this product.

Only about 15 minutes into my first time using these trays, I had to take them out. Not only did my teeth and gums burn like crazy, but the trays kept slipping around in my mouth and would NOT stay put. My teeth hurt the entire next day. Obviously, I decided I wouldn't use the rest of the 7-day treatment.

Like another user whose post I noticed, I plan to take the remaining trays back to the store and try to get a refund. I checked the Aquafresh website first, to see if they had a moneyback guarantee or other customer satisfaction policy, but I was unable to find one....which seems pretty unprofessional to me.

Bottom line, these things are AWFUL. Avoid them. I feel lucky my teeth are still in my head.

These are very difficult to use. I tried for the first time last night -- mouth filled up with foam, trays kept slipping off. I didn't want to swallow all that stuff, so tried to keep spitting it out, which just made everything move around more. I gave up after a few minutes, wiped off all that goo, and put on a pair of my old friends, Crest White Strips. I'm bringing the rest of the package of Aquafresh White Trays back to the store today, and hope to get a refund. What was Aquafresh thinking??!!

This is my third day using these trays and i'm in so much pain. Parts of my gums are white and i get these pain 'flashes' in my gums i don't know why. It does whiten a little though. But because of the pain, i would not recommend this product.

I'm on the second day of whitening right now. I am typing as I whiten, while also trying to tip my head back so my saliva doesn't ruin the results of my bottom teeth. Yesterday, my first day, I drooled A LOT, but today I found that if you lay back on the bed and tip your head back, your saliva will just run down your throat. I just play a game on my cell phone while I wait. Here is my opinion so far: They really don't fit my teeth well. I have smaller teeth, but the shape of the "trays" are not right for my mouth really. They don't really slide around because I don't talk or open my mouth a lot. My teeth do look whiter, but they are white on the bottom of the top teeth and the top of the bottom teeth like someone mentioned before. Before I put them in today, I brushed my teeth... BAD IDEA! As soon as I put them in, my gums started to burn really REALLY bad. I have about 7 minutes left with them in though, so I have stuck it out. I looked in the mirror and I can see that my gums are turning white, but like people mentioned before, I expect that to go away shortly. I had sensitivity to heat/cold/hard things today, but not so bad that I couldn't eat. I think I like the Crest Whitestrips better so far, but I will see how these work after a couple more days. HOPEFULLY this pain goes away!!!

I've been using the trays for four days now and i see a slight difference in the color of my teeth. It's nothing major but a difference is a difference, and I'm still not done so we'll see if it gets any better.I must say that the gel doesn't stay in the trays well at all, about two days worth of trays were useless because the gel just slithered out.The gel doesn't reach the tops or bottoms of my teeth so theres a tiny bit that doesn't get whitened.Trying to adjust just results in losing more gel.I haven't experienced gum pain or discomfort of any kind as i heard many people who've used this has. After all thats said and done though I'm still using mine,I would probably recommend it to anyone who wants fast whitening.

i was reading these reviews while the trays were in my mouth

not gonna lie my gum did burn but nothing i couldnt deal with

i didnt realize my bottom gum was bleeding until i got up from my work desk to take them out after 30 mins.

my teeth do look visibly whiter already but gums are quite sensitive

i dont how this is gonna work i need to drink my red bull to stay awake at work but my gums are so sensitive i have to sip it like tea.

anyway i reckon i will keep trying this stuff because i want white teeth and i am a bit of trooper so a little bit of gum burning and sensitivity is much better than shelling out loads of cash...

I started using the aquafresh white trays because I wanted a whiter smile(just like everyone else). The first day I used them I was slobbering all over the place, I finally realized that I had to swllow my saliva and not talk during the process. When I took the trays out brushed my teeth. I noticed white spots, as the box indicated it would happen. I didn't panic. My second day was a breeze, but my third day was HELL. About five minutes after putting the trays on my gums literally felt like they were on fire. I was so freaked out. When I went to rinse my mouth out, even the water made my gums hurt worse. I called the number on the side of the box and told them about my side effects. The woman told me to stop using them immmediately, and said that she would send me a refund in the mail. The product did make my teeth white. My gums unfortunately bleed, and puffed up. It even hurts to brush my teeth. I am now having sensitivity in my gums. I do not reccomend this product.

The trays are difficult to use. They don't fit very well, and the whitening gel is hard to spread to all of the tooth surface. I also felt the trays were very uncomfortable and they had to stay in for 45 minutes. I have used Crest Whitestrips before, and those were cheaper, easier to use, and I had better results than with the Aquafresh trays.

I was very pleased with this product. It did not fit my teeth perfectley, but still worked very well. Also, unlike crest white strips and other products the tray did not slip off my teeth, and it is only once a day. The gel does leek but when you remove them you see thats just extra and your teeth are thourgholy covered. I have big front teeth and they still worked great. As for the saliva i don't know why these people did not just swallow there saliva, and if your mouth is closed and no gaping open then they stay in place. I think even closing your top teeth onto you bottom is not such a big sacrifice. As for the white spots, the package says you may have white spots but they will go away after seven days as they did for me. My teeth are white now after having very yellow teeth, almost smokers color.

I have used these for 4 days now in conjunction with stopping smoking.

It is hard to keep them in my mouth for the full 30-45 minutes, as my mouth fills with white foam. They are also a little bit messy.

However, they seem to be working well; they leave my mouth fresh. I haven't noticed any side effects.

The product is expensive, but more affordable than professional whitening.

I am only on day one of these Aqua Fresh Whitetrays, but I am pleasantly surprised of how well they fit into my mouth. I notice everyone commenting on how difficult it is to keep the bottom try on your teeth, but I have noticed no discomfort yet nor does the tray slip off my teeth. So far so good! Hopefully I can get my teeth back to the shade that they were before I got braces!

Didn't think it would creat random white spots... on my 2nd day and decided not to continue, because i'm not sure if things will improve. I prefer my original teeth color and am now embarrassed to smile because of discoloration patterns. I'm hoping this will return to original teeth color in some time :( Never buying this stuff again. If color doesn't return, I might consider professional dentist to even out the color.

I just got my braces off and I was debating on zoom whitening or over the counter stuff so I tried the Aquafresh white trays and the gel did start comming out but the 2nd day i pushed the trays to the front to make sure all the gel covered my front teeth then pushed then back to get the back side of my teeth. I did notice my gums had white spots but that cleared in about 5 minutes. Overall they don't get your teeth blinding white but it is definetely the cheapest alternative to professional whitening. I would recommend this product to someone that doesn't have heavy discoloration on there teeth and just want a healthy white smile.

i having been using the strips for 3 days now, and they work amazingly well..after the first day i could already see a diff in the shade of my teeth. These work better than whitestrips. The only thing ive seen bad about them is i tend to drool alot, which is no surprise since i havnt used a retainer or braces before

I was disappointed after all the hype about this product. This product irritated my gums and wasn't worth it, they burned and I found it difficult to want to keep them on for the full time. The top try was perfect, but the bottom one slid around and was awful. While the trays did whiten my teeth a little bit, I found that the Crest White strips work much better and are about the same price. In the future i'll be buying the white strips, these are just not worth the money.

I hate these thing they dont stay on my teeth and all the gel goops out. This time I took the gel out with my fingers and smeared it on my teeth as I dont want to waste the good money that I paid for this product. I'd take the strips over these any day.

I would not buy this product. After the third day of use only using it 30 minutes each time I developed chemical burns on the roof of my mouth and on my gums. Very painful, it hurt to eat for over a week. Also at first my teeth looked like they were getting whiter but now I think they look more yellow than they did.

I posted on this board a few days ago when I was on my first day. I am now on day 4 and still no problems. My teeth are certainly whiter but not blindingly so. I have used them each of the last 4 days and the only thing I could complain about is having to put the top and bottom in separately. (this was my choice, of course) Consequently, the process takes almost 2 hours. Lucky I only work 2 days a week and have a lot of free time. I have had no trouble with white gums or pain of any kind, either gum or tooth related. I am hoping they get a bunch more white before I stop after 3 more days. But, I have a friend in the dental profession and can get the higher peroxide gel and put it in these trays (I will use 2 tops) and get the whitest result. (I hope) By the way, a bit of advice from my dental professional friend - do not drink coffee or tea or anything dark like that while you are in this process. Use a straw if you must partake - it will make a difference.
