Aquafresh White Trays Review

The Aqufresh Whitening tray is the newest over-the-counter whitening product to hit store shelves. The product is made up of disposable pre-filled trays that fit over the top and bottom teeth. The Hydrogen Peroxide percentage in the bleaching gel is 10%. The unique flexible structure of the tray allows it to fit snug in the front and back of the teeth. By covering both sides, the bleaching gel is able to cover a lot of surface area, making it one of the most effective over-the-counter whitening products on the market.

What does the Aquafresh White Tray Package contain?

Each Package delivers 7 days worth of whitening treatment. The package contains trays for the top and bottom of teeth.
Aquafresh White Trays close-up photos

Do Aquafresh White Trays work?

Yes, you should see results with this product. If you have used whitening strips in the past, then you will definitely see results with the Aquafresh White Trays. Whitening strips tend to cover a small portion of the smile arch while also having slippage. The aqua fresh whitening trays cover more teeth than whitening strips and are kept secure on the teeth.

What are the disadvantages of the Aquafresh White Trays?

The disposable trays are effective, but they are never better than a custom mold tray of your own teeth. A custom mold will ensure that the tray fits perfect in your mouth and covers all teeth. Since the Aquafresh White Tray has a predetermined size to fit the “average mouth” , you will likely notice that it does not cover all your teeth. So if you have a Julia Robert’s smile (you show all your teeth), you might be better off with a custom solution. To get a custom tray, you would have to go see a dentist. Expect to pay several hundred dollars for this.

Update: We contacted Aquafresh to find out the Hydrogen Peroxide concentration but received a bogus answer:

This percent of hydrogen peroxide is proprietary information. The gel releases active oxygen which interacts with the stains below the surface of your teeth. The result of removing these deep stains is whiter teeth. Aquafresh® White Trays™ are professionally designed pre-dosed trays prefilled with a whitening ingredient used by dentists.
This is the first whitening product we have seen come to market that does not provide the hydrogen peroxide percentage. Consumers should know this information! So Aquafresh is the new guy on the “teeth whitening” block… it seems they need take a few lessons from Crest:

Lesson 1. Consumers are now looking for more information to help them make a clear and informed choice when purchasing teeth whitening products.
Lesson 2. Most progressive teeth whitening brands are already providing the hydrogen peroxide percentage that consumers are asking for.
Lesson 3. By improving the way information is provided, consumers can make positive choices and help the entire teeth whitening market meet the challenges of sustainability.

Update 5-12-2008 - We received confirmation that Hydrogen Peroxide Concentration is 10%

Update: A lot of people have commented that the Aquafresh White Tray Bleaching gel caused their gums to turn white and swell. It is important to note that this effect will happen when any kind of bleaching gel with hydrogen peroxide gets into contact with the gums. Although the “bleached gums” and soreness is temporary, one can smear Vitamin E liquid (from the gel caps) onto the affected area to promote fast healing.

Here are some things you can do to avoid the bleaching gel from inadvertently going onto your gums and irritating them:

  • After fitting the tray, wipe off excess bleach with a soft cloth.
  • Try applying Vaseline to your gums before bleaching.
  • Don’t brush your teeth before bleaching. Brushing causes tiny microabrasions in the gingiva (gums). Bleach will penetrate the acquired pellicle on the teeth so don’t worry about brushing first.
  • When you remove the trays, expectorate as much bleach as possible and rinse with water before brushing.

OUCH!! I am returning these to the store. I have a high tolerance for pain but the burning of my gums was so intense that my eyes were watering. I could only take the pain for 6 minutes. The trays didn't fit my larger than average teeth. Be very careful.

I'd take these trays over strips any day. The strips always seemed to slide around. I've used them for two days and can already see a difference. The peroxcide did hurt a bit today and my gums were white (duh, it is peroxcide) for about twenty minutes but it's gone now. I use Sensodyne toothpaste normally, and I think that's helping keep the sensitivity down, so i recommend using it before starting and during the treatment cycle. These seem to work well on my mildly-stained teeth, but for others with darker stains, it will probably take the full seven days to see results, if not another treatment cycle.

This stuff totally hurt my mouth. The first time it wasn't so bad, the second time it hurt pretty bad and the third time I used it... it hurt so bad that I had to take it out a few seconds later. Now my gums burn. I just payed like $35 to burn my gums. Yay? Also, the stuff is gross and makes you drool and foam at the mouth and you look like you have rabies. This stuff just, well, is gross.

Better off saving to get a professional bleaching at the dentist.

I've just spent $34 plus tax @ Walmart for this awful mess! I have used every whiteneing brand on the market w/the exception of the cheap brands, only the name brands and I have never had such a diastrous, expensive! experience. The trays are not a comfortable fit so forget what the box says (even if you have a small mouth) the trays do NOT fit. To get the best results do these things: Use 1 tray @ ONE TIME. If you use both, they will slop around and you won't get half of the effect of whitening. Next, do not, absolutely do NOT squish them. The semi soft gel will warm up and spread itself around. You will burn your gum line and any other surface besides your teeth if (including an amazing burn on your tongue) if you squish it the trays to inside your mouth. I find about an hour gives me the best look when I remove them, vs the 30-45 minutes and I only use them once a day because I believe the amount of the peroxide can be determintal to your gums if you use it more than once a day. I also believe the strength of the perioxide is very very high. Just some notes....and by the way, I will NOT be buying this product again. I find the Rembrandt are the absolute best and I enjoy the Crest line second!

The first time I used these I made a horrible mess, drool and foam everywhere, and the bottom one kept swishing around. Then I figured it out, I use them one at a time, bottom then top. I got used to them so now I dont drool at all. The never burnt my gums or bleached them. I am at an advantage because right now I am working from home so I have lots of time to do this, but I leave them in for almost an hour each side. I have uneven teeth at the top so I figured if I did 20 min then shifted it over slightly and kept doing this for an hour that it would actually cover all my teeth nicely. It is false advertising because you cannot just do "30 min" a day at all and you cant walk around with them, at least not at first until your mouth gets used to them. So I spend almost an hour and a half each day with them on while I work, its been 4 days and I am finally seeing some results. I think they are worth it for such a low price if you have the time and patience to learn to use them. They taste good and dont leave streaks or spots. One tip: dont press too hard on them when you put them on the first time because you will drool alot and all the gel will start to come out the sides faster.

False advertising? Conveient? certainly not. These are the worst design in whitening products Ive seen. They are nothing like their advertisements suggest. the 'trays' are little most than folded parchment paper and they are the most horrifically messy things I've ever tried to use of heard of. I was attracted the their claims of them being easy to use and form fitting, but that was quite the opposite. I have the first treatment in right now. And now reading reviews I am getting scared, especially since they are starting to burn, which Ive not had with previous products. Apparently I must have tall teeth because they do not come close to covering my whole tooth. They also don't wrap along the toothbed well at all. There is no way I could perform any of the activities they suggest while wearing these. they also suggest 30-45 minutes, that seems like a very flexible time period for something that is essentially a chemical reaction. most products are fairly strict on their times and instructions. The bottom 'tray doesn't stay in place at all and the top one is slipping worse than any strip I've ever used and I'm not trying to do anything. How do we return these things?
If you want something form fitting go for the oral B/rembrant form fitting strips, Ive used those in the past and they were great. I couldn't find them recently so I decided to opt for these aquafresh cleaner alternative and that was a hilarious farce. The trays might be a little annoying but nothing compared to these things.

I decided to give the white trays a try, despite some of the negative comments about them posted here. I have used them for three days now and haven't had a problem. The first day was a little annoying because i was drooling and had mouth fulls of spit while using. The next day, I figured out how I would control it, and now it's not bad at all. The trays fit my mouth really well too, but like others say, they aren't for big teeth by any means. Also, in regards to others commenting on the dying of the gums white, this has happened to me once. It happened to one of my bottom gums. I left it alone for about 10 minutes, brushed my teeth, and it was gone. I don't find them uncomfortable to wear, they don't bother me at all. Definitely worth it if you want to whiten, have a noticeable difference in 2/3 days that will only get whiter. The price is well worth it as well, as opposed to an expensive trip to the dentists office. I recommend them over whitestrips anyday. Hope this helps those that worry like I did. Take the risk, the worse that can happen is you don't like them and you stop using them, but it's worth it! PS: they don't taste bad either...better than strips, much less gummy as well.

This is my first day using the Aquafresh whitestrips, and I did not like it that much. I usually use the Crest whitestrips, but this time I wanted to try a different one, even though I was a little hesitant because I do like the Crest ones. The first time I put them on, my top gums started burning a lot and the bottom tray was slipping, so I took them off and through them away. I considered returning them, but I thought I should give it another try, and so I did. This time my top teeth were covered and the gums weren't burning, but the bottom tray did not seem to fit too well. I had to keep pressing it down with my fingers or biting it. Plus, I kept getting gel on my tongue, which was coming off the bottom tray. It was very messy, kind of painful and not comfortable because it does not fit in my mouth very well. The Crest strips are better, in my opinion, because they fit well on my teeth, don't come off if I am doing something sedentary, and do get my teeth whitened. The only good thing about these trays is that you only have to use them once a day for 30-45 minutes. Maybe I should have stayed with Crest instead of buying these Aquafresh trays, which I am going to try to return.

I am on day 3 and not seeing any huge whitening effect. I've used whiteners before and never had gum sensitiivity. My drive to work is 45 minutes - so I use them at that time. On day 2, I was taking the trays out and I was struck with a pain that was almost paralyzing. It felt like someone had struck a nerve in my mouth!

I am hopeful that I will see results and not have anymore pain or experience gum bleaching/spotting.

This is day one for me and one of my co-workers and I must say Im satisfied so far... We purchased the AquaStrips from Walmart as well.. I followed the directions carefully.. no burning or spotting for me.. the trays do not fit my mouth correctly and the foaming gets annoying however I already see results.. It will be well worth it! my teeth looks brighter and feel so smooth.. I cant wait for the ending results... On the other hand my co-worker is not pleased but her teeth was not white, off white, or even mother of pearl to begin with, her teeth was already stained and have been yellow since Ive known her 6 years.... I think it all depends on the condition of your teeth and gums.. some people with stained yellow teeth should not relyon a $30.00 product to work miricles.. consult your dentist first.. I did and he suggest that I try Aqua Strips first before paying for cosmetic bleaching.. hope this help...

Aquafresh whitening trays hurt. Day 1 was fine. My teeth didn't hurt at all, no discoloration of my gums, no white spots on my teeth. Day 2 hurt. My teeth were so sensitive that when I woke up the next morning my teeth hurt from breathing through my mouth all night!!! I could hardly drink juice because of how sensitive the trays made my teeth. Day 3 was the same, but a new pain had started. I coudn't chew on my right side anymore because of an intense pain in between two of my teeth. The only good thing so far was that my teeth were clearly whiter. By the end of the week, my teeth had become blindingly white, but only half of them. The trays were not big enough to fit over my teeth at all. So mostly only the bottom half on top and the top half on the bottom were bleached. Another problem I had was getting the bottom tray to stay in place. One side would not stay down against my teeth causing uneven whitening of several teeth. I also could not stop drooling. The commercial says you can talk and go about your daily chores, but I could hardly say one word without saliva running everywhere, and it didn't even sound like a word!!! All in all, I don't think aquafresh whitening trays are worth the money. If you have small teeth, they might be ok, but I don't think the pain is worth it! My teeth are still sensitive to cold and hot drinks and it still hurts to chew ending it a week ago! Buyers Beware!

Great whitening. I didn't have any spots on my gums or spotting on my teeth. The bottom tray is a little hard to use but the top is fine. I wonder how often you can use these trays?

I have to agree with everyone. These trays are horrible. The first day i used them i left them in for 30 minutes like the directions said. I wasn't prepared for what happened after I took the trays out. MY GUMS WERE WHITE. no where in the box or on the box did it have this type of side effect listed. I am going to try to get a refund.

I just used this product for the second day and they just bleached my gums. It's already going away about 30 minutes into it but now they're are purple and slighty bleeding. I also have white spots on my two front teeth where it whitened some parts of my tooth and not others. I guess I'll have to shell out some major cash now to make my teeth look uniform. I will also be calling to get my money back. I'm ticked because in reading what many of you have written on here you have expeirnced the same thing yet there is not a warning in the box saying any of these side effects could happen. That really upsets me. As the consumer we should be allowed to judge based on all side effects. I predict this product will taken of the shelves....as it should be!!

im already on day 2. my first day was fine. but, on my 2nd day. my gum was in so much pain. after 45 minutes had passes. it did whiten my teeth but also a part of my GUM. it freaked scared me, when it bleached my GUM white. but its been an hour and its fine now. but i really dont recommend it. this is a risky product. i dont want to damage my gums any further. CREST WHITENING STRIPS work better, but dont give me this hassle and worries about my gums. This product seems to do DAMAGE...dont like it. im not going to even continue it...even tho is been 2 days.

Im using aqua fresh whiten trays right now (as im typing) & yeah the drooling is a pain but having a white smile is worth it. I just started using them today. I did use the crest white strips befor but i couldnt use them everyday because they made my teeth very sensitive & they slipped off. The AFWS are much better. They fit nice & they feel like they are working. The only thing that is bothering me right now is that my tongue stings a little bit. They are not that expensive & are most likely worth it. I would recommend them for now. Ill come back on here when im done using them & let you know!!

I've used the trays for 3 days now and my teeth are much whiter. They have bleeched my gums but it went away in an hour. I have extremely sensative teeth but these only hurt a little. I would recommend this product because they are cheaper and stay on my teeth better than cres white strips.

I had a coupon, and the trays were on sale, so I figured for $21 i would try them. After day one, i was left with random white spots on my teeth! The instructions say they will disappear with continued use, but they've barely gone away. They also make your gums hurt and sometimes dye them white, so I've only used them every other day. the trays seem to fit my mouth well (but I have a small mouth), and after the first day i figured out how to make the gel stay in. Overall I would not recommend them because now I'm going to have to pay for professional whitening anyway to even the color out.

I have worn them 3 times now. Today I woke up and my gums were swollen. All day at work my gums felt like I had a toothache in all the front teeth where the trays cover. When I got home I noticed in the mirror that all my gums are swollen and bleeding. They now have air pockets in them. I am scared and need to see a dentist to figure out what this product has done to me. Also I tried to brush my teeth and its so painful. Can anyone tell me whats going on? please mail me at evo_guy21@yahoo.com thanx a lot.

I have used the trays 3-4 times all very incinsistent. I could tell the moment I took them off that my teeth were a shade whiter. Even my husband noticed. And we have been through multiple diffrent types of over the counter products.
I do not normaly have sensative teeth, however I did notice after the 2nd or 3rd tray my gums would have a slight sting to them while whareing the trays and I had one white spot on over one of my top tooths. I did not scrub it off or mess with them. It all went away by the time I was dressed and out the door for work.

I was a bit sceptic about these, but after having braces for a few years I really wanted them whiter after they were off. I've only been using them for two days, but they're excellent! The bottom tray is annoying, and the gel seems to slip around with the tray on the bottom, because I either get the gel behind my teeth, or not on their at all. Overall though they were a great buy! My teeth are already a shade brighter. Nos sensitivity here!

I am currently using the Aquafresh White Trays, and I can definitely see a difference. I have had no gum sensitivity. I have also had trouble keeping the bottom tray in place, so I wear the top and bottom trays separately. The bottom tray seems to stay in place better then. Definitely recommend (but not if you have sensitive gums.)
