Britesmile Review

The BriteSmile Teeth Whitening System is manufactured by Discus Dental Inc (the makers of Zoom! Whitening) who purchased BriteSmile in January 2006 for 38 million. BriteSmile has a base of at least 700,000 customers. The brand should be familiar to you, since it is marketed aggressively through publications, radio, television, and the internet. Publications like CBS National, USA Today, The Oprah Magazine, InStyle and Teen Vogue have referred to BriteSmile on numerous occasions.

The Britesmile whitening treatments can be performed at either a dentist office or “whitening spa.”

Update 2/25/08
Discus Dental (operators of Zoom! Whitening) owns the in-office dentist version of BriteSmile. Ownership of the whitening spa boutiques have been kept by BriteSmile.

What are the advantages of BriteSmile?

BriteSmile guarantees that your teeth will be at least 9 shades lighter after the treatment. The entire procedure takes just over an hour to finish.

Are the BriteSmile teeth whitening spas trustworthy?

BriteSmile’s teeth whitening spas are renowned for their comfort and service. Customers watch television, listen to music or simply close their eyes and relax during the procedure. Certified dental professionals (not dentists!) take care to see that your teeth look bright and white.

What about the safety standards of BriteSmile?

Many medical studies have testified that BriteSmile’s whitening gel is safe for your mouth. The gel contains lower amounts of hydrogen peroxide as compared to other teeth whitening systems, so there is no burning sensation in the mouth during the procedure.

Is the whitening process painful for my teeth?

The low amounts of hydrogen peroxide ensure that the whitening process is a pleasurable and pain-free experience for the user.

What does BriteSmile use for the teeth-whitening procedure?

The BriteSmile system uses a LED light array delivery system along with a gentle whitening gel. The LED light emits a wavelength between 400 and 500nm, which gives it a bluish color. According to BriteSmile, the light in this wavelength activates a photo initiator built-in the tooth bleach, which in turn helps to speed up the bleaching process. The whitening gel is a 17% H2O2.

How can I maintain my teeth after the teeth whitening process is over?

After the completion of the teeth whitening procedure, customers are given BriteSmile whitening toothpaste. This toothpaste helps to prevent the teeth from staining again.

BriteSmile Whitening Spa locations can be found in:
California: Irvine, Beverly Hills, Palo Alto, San Diego, San Francisco, Walnut Creek Arizona: Phoenix , Colorado: Denver , Georgia: Atlanta , Illinois: Chicago, Schaumburg , Massachusetts: Boston , New York: New york (Soho & Madison Avenue) , Texas: Houston , Virginia: McLean

Oh my! Just had it done at lunchtime. Cannot believe how much whiter my teeth are. But good golly do they hurt! This pain is terrible. Didn't enjoy the procedure either, though I think it will end up being worth it.

Definitely saw improvement, but dont expect for your teeth to be as white as any model or actress. What do they use anyway? Also, definitely wait for the deals. I got 2 people for $385.

Did Britesmile at my dentist. Procedure all and all took about 2 hours because of the prep work. It was pretty uncomfortable, but I kept with it thinking the results would be great, which they were for a day. I was so happy about my teeth for within two days they were completely back to normal, I couldnt believe it. 360 bucks for nothing. I am sure it works for some people, but not me. Im going to try the white strips and see if that works better.

Not worth it. Good for only one day. Teeth were whitened about two shades and woo and behold returned to original color next day. Wish they would of been honest and said that during consultation.

Britesmile is a waste of money (400 dollars). It did not change the color of my teeth at all! Was very upset.

I had the procedure yesterday. They convinced me to do the 4th treatment, which I tolerated fairly well. Some sensitivity but not enough to keep me from proceeding. Afterward, my teeth are very white, but my gums had white margins all around my teeth which are sore. By this morning the white areas had turned to a greyish black - very ugly and sore. They told me the white would turn to red - not black. My teeth are not sore, just my gums. I hope this dark coloring goes away - it is god awful ugly.

Whitened 7 shades. Went during my lunch break

I read these reviews about tooth sensitivity and must say I was really scared off. I did not experience pain and suffering. I did have one or two "zingers" two hours after and they were not that bad.

The procedure is painless, I have a strong gag reflex and had discomfort with the white thing they shove in your mouth - The dentist said I could do it without it as long as i don't move my teeth - which was ok.

I was nervous to try Britesmile because I heard that there can be serious tooth sensitivity post-treatment.
I was very surprised that I experienced no pain or discomfort either during or after the procedure. I had it done at a dentist's office, having booked the appointment through the Britesmile website. They are offering a $299 web promotion. The results were very good. My teeth are about 10 shades lighter. You have to stay away from staining food and beverages for 24 hours, which can be difficult. I took a caffeine pill in the morning instead of my usual coffee to wake up the next day, and ate white foods and clear drinks. Bland but worth it.

Overall: very happy with the result

I went to BriteSmile on Walton years ago, and I LOVED the result. I didn't purchase the toothpaste.

So now, years later. I'M GOING BACK. I've been drinking coffee and (YIKES!) smoking cigarettes for the past year. Before I had it done the first time, I weaned myself from caffeine (coffee, anyway) because what's the point if you're just going to stain your teeth right away all over again?

I DID receive my before and after pictures, and I don't really mind if the staff are cool or not. IT WORKS. I also don't recall whether I had any particular sensitivity during the following days. I just want my white smile back, and BriteSmile does the job.

NEVER pay full price though because you don't have to. Find a coupon or wait for a special because you can.

Worked for one day. The whiteness started to fade the very next day. I would love to say the results were similar to that of bleaching trays, but those results actually lasted much longer (rembrandt.) For the price of 325 vs 25 for the rembrandt, it certainly was not worth it. A rip off for me.

Looks good the day you get it after that the results are gone. You can get the same if not better results from the white strips and it is 1/20th the cost. It is also extremely uncomfortable. I would suggest getting a good powered toothbrush and white strips and would never recommend this to anyone.

Just a note for those who are considering this procedure. Not everyone's teeth are whitenable. If they are yellow from coffee, smoking, wine, etc., you have stains and they can be removed. But if your teeth are naturally yellow, as mine are, this process won't work, so save your money.

I went to Brite Smile in NYC, which is a lovely modern and clean facility. They did an analysis of my teeth, and then informed me that I have naturally yellow teeth and at best I might get one shade lighter. At least they are honest, or the tech who took care of me was honest anyway. I was going to go for it, figuring one shade lighter is better than nothing, but then they hooked up the apparatus, which includes a horseshoe-shaped thing inside your mouth, and I had to stop because I couldn't stop gagging on it. So another caveat -- if you have a strong gag reflex, this might not be for you.

Incidentally, my dentist told me the same thing years ago when I asked about whitening my teeth -- that my teeth are not the kind that can be whitened. This distinction is not something you hear about in all the teeth-whitening hype, but it might be worth asking your dentist before committing to an expensive spa-type treatment that won't help you.

I just had my teeth done yesterday at the Walton location in Chicago. I'm 8 shades lighter. Started at C1 and went to the third lightest veneer color!! My teeth look beautiful :) Of course, I DID NOT have tetracycline stains, which I understand are very difficult to lighten.

The staff are awesome, friendly, and KNOWLEDGABLE about ALL their products. It was really a great experience. The down side is that my teeth really do hurt today :( I'm sure it will go away, but still uncomfortable. Overall, very happy.

not worth the money at all. got same results from strips and trays which didnt make much of a difference either. results maybe 2 shades lighter. 6 hours later returned to previous color and i didnt eat anything! never saw before and after however i didnt need to because it was obvious that it just didnt work. reading most of the other posts would be encouraging for some but in my opinion its just not worth the time and money! i paid $300 on special from $600 supposedly. i would've gladly paid the 6 had it worked as it should've. never again!

I had the britesmile done at a local dentist 3 years ago this januray...cost $425. Took 60 minutes, three 20 minute sessions. There was not unbearable discomfort during it...it wasn't exactly pleasant...but not too bad....watched tv they gave me the remote =)
I did not receiev any free toothpaste or anything nor did they show me a before and after photo.
I was told to only eat white foods the rest for the day...which was lame but i abided! All the rest of the day i kinda kept my mouth half open from the throbbing sensation....not all that bad though really...but again NOT pleasant! Took ibuprofen early in the day and Drank vodka tonics that night so that felt better...the next day i woke up feeling fine and the whitening worked beautifully....and not a fake looking white at all.
Here I am three years later and i need to do it again...actually i've been wanting to do it again for about a year and a half now...but i do drink an awful lot of coffee....so i guess maybe i should try to lay off that =)

I had this done yesterday for the second time- superb results again!

The first time I had stabbing pain but was tolerable and went quite soon. My teeth are quite painful the second time....waking me up several times! Still not pain free yet.

I had mine doen for £295 which is half the normal price!
Last time I pad £350. I would grumble at paying nearly £600 though!!!

I would never reccommend laser teeth whitening, either BriteSmile or Zoom to anyone. I recently had it done and was badly burned by the laser on the inside of the lips. Also, the results were barely better than store whitening strips. I wish I had read reviews of teeth whitening dangers before having it done.

Very effective but man, oh man, my teeth are hurting afterward. It is practically unbearable and I'm afraid to even breathe with my mouth open. I wouldn't schedule anything else for afterward if you get this treatment. I had to pick up my two toddlers, cook dinner, bath them, put them to bed and attend a school event, all in acute pain and it was pure misery. My teeth look really good but I'd never do this again -- no way! I gave birth twice and thought I was tough as nails with a high pain tolerance but I've never experienced anything like this, it's like soaking your teeth in frigid water and then someone rubbing ice cream all over them.

Had ZOOM 4 years ago and decided to try Brite Smile at a local spa to touch up. Very pleased with results. Some sensitivity but this lasted only a few hours. More importantly, paid only $90.00 for 30 minute treatment. Plan to do this once a year for touch up. People were friendly and solicitous.

I was in a lot of pain the evening after the treatment. My gums were irritated so it hurt to eat or brush my teeth. The pain was so bad it woke me up at night. The whitening not only didn't last, it made my teeth streaky for part of my teeth are white and part is yellow. It looks like I have plaque on my teeth and I am now ashamed to smile. The dentist has no solution for me as his best case scenario is that the whitening wears off and returns to my prior color. One month being optimistic.

Long story short: the staff was rude, my teeth aren't that much whiter, it costs too much, and the pain was worse than giving birth out my belly button.

Like the previous poste I had the whiting done at the BrightSmile on Walton in Chicago on 11/22/08. My teeth are 9-10 shades lighter, so I am very happy with the results. The doctor and staff were all very friendly. There was no pain during the procedure at all, but there was some sensitivity afterwards on a couple of my teeth that felt like they had cavities. My gums were never sore as some of the other people posted. My discomfort disappaited several hours later.
