Britesmile Review

The BriteSmile Teeth Whitening System is manufactured by Discus Dental Inc (the makers of Zoom! Whitening) who purchased BriteSmile in January 2006 for 38 million. BriteSmile has a base of at least 700,000 customers. The brand should be familiar to you, since it is marketed aggressively through publications, radio, television, and the internet. Publications like CBS National, USA Today, The Oprah Magazine, InStyle and Teen Vogue have referred to BriteSmile on numerous occasions.

The Britesmile whitening treatments can be performed at either a dentist office or “whitening spa.”

Update 2/25/08
Discus Dental (operators of Zoom! Whitening) owns the in-office dentist version of BriteSmile. Ownership of the whitening spa boutiques have been kept by BriteSmile.

What are the advantages of BriteSmile?

BriteSmile guarantees that your teeth will be at least 9 shades lighter after the treatment. The entire procedure takes just over an hour to finish.

Are the BriteSmile teeth whitening spas trustworthy?

BriteSmile’s teeth whitening spas are renowned for their comfort and service. Customers watch television, listen to music or simply close their eyes and relax during the procedure. Certified dental professionals (not dentists!) take care to see that your teeth look bright and white.

What about the safety standards of BriteSmile?

Many medical studies have testified that BriteSmile’s whitening gel is safe for your mouth. The gel contains lower amounts of hydrogen peroxide as compared to other teeth whitening systems, so there is no burning sensation in the mouth during the procedure.

Is the whitening process painful for my teeth?

The low amounts of hydrogen peroxide ensure that the whitening process is a pleasurable and pain-free experience for the user.

What does BriteSmile use for the teeth-whitening procedure?

The BriteSmile system uses a LED light array delivery system along with a gentle whitening gel. The LED light emits a wavelength between 400 and 500nm, which gives it a bluish color. According to BriteSmile, the light in this wavelength activates a photo initiator built-in the tooth bleach, which in turn helps to speed up the bleaching process. The whitening gel is a 17% H2O2.

How can I maintain my teeth after the teeth whitening process is over?

After the completion of the teeth whitening procedure, customers are given BriteSmile whitening toothpaste. This toothpaste helps to prevent the teeth from staining again.

Overall I am happy with my results, but there are several factors that I considered. First, I had some success with tray whitening from my dentist a few years ago, but my gums would get really irritated by the bleaching gel. Second, my teeth are really uneven in color and I wasn't sure I could get good results with over the counter products. Third, my teeth were yellowish which is usually the easiest color to lighten. Fourth, I got a good deal at $299 (I prepaid through the Brite Smile website) and last and probably most importantly I was very happy with the service I got from the dental office. My darkest teeth lightened almost 10 shades and my lighter teeth about 5 shades. I had no pain during the procedure, but my teeth did start to ache about 2 hours afterwards, and continued to be quite painful for the next 12 hours, after which it gradually subsided. The dental technician actually polished my teeth before she began (to get rid of some surface stains) and did an excellent job of protecting my gums from the bleach. I did get a slight burn on the inside of my lower lip, even though the technician reapplied protective gel to my lips several times during the treatment. I also had 4 20 minute treatments instead of the standard 3. This was something the dental technician offered me at no extra cost. At the end I was told to stick to "white foods" for the next 24 hours and given a kit with 3 Brite Smile whitening pens in it. I did not get perfectly white teeth, but they do look significantly better and so far the results pretty much the same as they did when I walked out the office.

Wow!!! just did my britesmile procedure today. Yes it got my teeth 8 shades whiter...but right now, 6 hrs later, it freaking hurts! At first it was just shooting pains every few minutes, now its a contant sharp pain. This really sux. I was expecting some pain and discomfort, but nothing like this. They said 12-24 hrs of pain...i'm praying for just 12 hours. Do my teeth look better?? yes. Is the pain worth it? right now hell no! Maybe when the pain subsides I'll feel differently. If you are about to do this procedure.....please beware and be ready for some pain if your teeth are sensitive at all! Good Luck.

Just came back from a Britesmile tooth whitening... and have to admit that after reading all the reviews on the internet about teeth whitening hurting and the associated discomfort, that I was a bit scared! In actual fact, it did not hurt at all. My teeth are not a brilliant white colour either, which I am very happy about. They are a natural, cleaner white colour, without it looking fake. Yet to see whether the colour fades or not... lets hope not! So far... I would definitely recommend it :-)

Loved it, was time consuming (1.5 hrs solid) and expensive (approx $500) but got long lasting and noticeable results. It has been 6 years now and I am just now starting notice some slight discoloration beginning again. I get compliments on my teeth all the time. Immediately after the session I had about a week of gum recovery, some burning right around the top of the tooth, but it was worth it.

Product results did not last as long as traditional whitening with trays. Even with the expensive post procedure products, the results still were not what I had expected.

I just got my BriteSmile treatment. After doing a bit of research, I went ahead with it and I am thrilled!

It wasn’t too uncomfortable during the procedure, but after about 20 minutes, I was ready to have the retractor removed. Your jaw will get really tired.

The price seemed a bit high at $500, however, I believe the pricing is getting more competitive, so if you call around, you might be able to get a better deal. I would do it again for sure!

I did the britesmile laser treatment a couple months back. After the treatment I immediately saw that my teeth were significantly whiter. The dentist even proved this me using digital before and after pictures. However, after about 3 days, a lot of the whiteness went away. The dentist said it was probably just the lighting environment I was in. But after some research I found out that there are high chances of relapse with britesmile since its technique involves dehydrating the teeth. Once your teeth are hydrated again, they’ll be the same color as before! Be careful!
