Zoom Whitening Review

The Zoom Teeth Whitening System by Discus Dental Inc is one of the most popular teeth whitening systems available on the market today. In fact, it is the most widely used light activated system by dentists worldwide. The product comes in an all-inclusive pack. This means that the dentist is provided with all the necessary materials required for professional tooth bleaching in a single ready to use kit. The product includes the tooth whitener, the bleaching light and a number of disposable and single use items to be used on the patient while performing Zoom! Whitening treatments.

What type of tooth whitener is used with the Zoom Teeth Whitening System?

The Zoom! Teeth Whitening System uses a unique hydrogen peroxide based whitening gel. The produc has two different components, a 32% hydrogen peroxide gel and an activator. The two components have to be mixed together in the right proportion to form a working gel with a 25% concentration of hydrogen peroxide, with a pH level between 7.5 and 8.5.

Does the Zoom Teeth Whitening System require a bleaching light?

As a part of the procedure, the Zoom! Teeth Whitening System requires the use of a mercury metal halide light for bleaching. According to Discus Dental Inc, the wavelength of the light emitted from its units is in the range of 350-400 nm. The light is violet in color. The manufacturer claims that the mercury metal halide light with this wavelength activates the Zoom Whitening System, speeding up the bleaching process and enhances its performance.

The light unit in the Zoom! System comes with a built-in infrared filter. The filter helps in minimizing the amount of heat generated at the surface of the teeth from the light during the bleaching process by filtering the emissions. The Zoom! Teeth Whitening System is capable of whitening both the top and bottom teeth simultaneously with a strategically placed light.

Discus Dental developed a newer bleaching lamp in 2007, called the Zoom Advanced Power Lamp. It’s advertised to dentists as a more powerful tool - whitening teeth by as much as 2 shades more than the previous Zoom lamp product. Clinical studies conducted by The Dental Advisor in November of 07 seem to confirm this lamp’s claims - with results showing whitening improvement in the 1.9 range over the previous protocol.

Does the Zoom bleaching light produce a heating effect on the teeth being whitened?

The existing Zoom protocol and lamp have been used on the market for a long time. While the majority of patients report no heating effect during the bleaching treatment, some patients have experienced lip burns or tooth dehydration as illustrated in the user comments below. The new Advanced Power Light, however, has been shown to cause less sensitivity in sensitivity-prone or almost-sensitivity prone patients.

How much does the Zoom! bleaching light cost?

The exact price of the Zoom bleaching light is difficult to predict, but your dentist might have paid in excess of about $1,500 USD for the original lamp. The newer Advanced Power Lamp can run in the $1900 - $2000 range. These prices will help you estimate what you’ll have to pay for your treatment.

How long does it take your dentist to perform a Zoom Chairside Teeth Whitening System treatment?

The Zoom! Teeth Whitening treatments usually take about 90 minutes for the entire procedure. The treatment process is divided in three individual applications of the Zoom! Teeth Whitening System. Each application is of approximately 20 minutes. The patient’s teeth are exposed to the Zoom! Teeth Whitening System for a total of 60 minutes. The pre and post treatment procedures account for the remaining 30 minutes.

Does the Zoom! Teeth whitening system make use of at-home teeth whitening treatments?

Yes. The patients are provided with an additional whitener (a tray-based teeth whitening product) after the completion of the Zoom! Teeth Whitening treatment. The patients are also given instructions on using the product so that they can continue with the bleaching at home.

What are the individual steps of the Zoom Chairside teeth whitening system?

The Zoom! Teeth Whitening System has several steps. First, the doctor evaluates the patient’s pre-whitening tooth shade. The dentist then isolates the teeth that need to be whitened with the use of a dental dam. The patient is protected with a bib. The dentist then applies the hydrogen peroxide whitening gel on the surface of the teeth. After the application of the whitening gel, the activating light is used on the teeth for activating the whitening gel. The tooth whitener is then left for about 20 minutes. The procedure is repeated two more times, with each application lasting for 20 minutes. After the procedure is over, the teeth are washed thoroughly and the whitener is removed completely from the surface. The dentist then applies 1.1% neutral sodium fluoride gel on the teeth surface to reduce or prevent any sensitivity to hot and cold items. Finally, the patient is provided with an at-home tooth whitening system along with instructions for following up.

Should you choose the Zoom Chairside Teeth Whitening System?

The answer to this question depends entirely on your dentist. The dentist can guide you properly after examining your teeth and then suggest the most appropriate product. If you’re interested in teeth whitening with the new Advanced Power Lamp, you may have to ask which whitening lamp the dentist will be using - some dentists will still be utilizing the original Zoom lamp. In general, the Zoom! Teeth Whitening System is a very good product manufactured by a reputed company. The Zoom! Teeth Whitening System gives teeth whitening results that are comparable to other similar laser whitening products

I had the zoom! treatment done about 7 hours ago. My dentist was very meticulously about covering my gums before and touched up in between my three 15 minute treatments. I experienced one or two zingers and a lot of sensitivity during the last treatment. My dentist seemed pretty concerned because I couldn't tolerated the relief gel. She gave me some ibuprofen and sent me on my way. My teeth were pretty sensitive and I got a zinger every once in a while so I tried to keep from talking or exposing my teeth to the air. When I got home I was starving so I carefully ate a sandwhich. I'm not sure if that's what set off the zingers or if they would have started anyways, but within an hour I started to have extreme sensitivity and constant zingers, throbbing, aching, and a dull pain in my entire jaw. I've taken 3 more motrin and I'm considering taking some darviset I have left over from a procedure a while back.
I'm pleased with the overall whitening and I hope that my pain will subside within the next 12 hours or so. In the meantime I'm just sitting here suffering through some of the worst pain that I've felt in a long time. Maybe ever.
I luckily haven't experienced any of the horrible gum burning or blistering or lip swelling. My dentist was really careful about covering my lips. During the procedure I thought about the UV lamp and surmised that it would wreck havoc on my lips if they had been exposed.
I would definitely recommend looking into other procedures. There are so many wonderful products and options available. I'm sure someone could receive comparable results with far less pain.

I had the ZOOM! treatment done yesterday morning. I had no idea that the treatment was going to be so uncomfortable & painful! I opted to do the 4 fifteen minute sessions to achieve the best results. During the 1st session it felt like my gums were on fire. During the 2nd session it wasn't so bad. Then on the 3rd & 4th sessions it was hell! I kept getting what is referred to as "zingers" shooting in different teeth. The dental rep never warned me about these things! So, after it was done and they removed the mouth brace, gauze, gum gel protector and bib they let me spit in a tube to get all the junk out. I looked at my teeth and they were noticably whiter. However the tops edges that were covered by the gum protector were still the old color. Kinda weird. So I got sent home with take home whitening trays for maintenance. When I got home I notice that my gums above my 2 front teeth are burned and very swollen! Very painful and hard to brush my teeth with this. About 30 mins later I began to get the most horrible aches in my teeth and those horribel zingers. The zingers come out of nowehere and feellike someone id jabbing a needle on your toother nerve. They were SO sensitive, even to the air when I would talk. The pain was so bad, tylenol or ibuprophin did not do anything. Luckily I had some vicodin from when I had some teeth pulled about a year ago. I had to take 2 of those to ease the pain. Needless to say I conked out early last night from the meds and when I woke up the pain wasn't so bad anymore. But my gums are red & purple and still a bit swollen. By bottom teeth are still a bit sensitive too. All in all, my teeth are much whiter but I would never do the ZOOM! again. I would opt for just a take home whitener and do it a little at a time.

I had the ZOOM done this morning at 7:00 am. It is now 5:23 pm, and I can say that the uncomfortable "zingers" have subsided. I endured all three 15-minute sessions. During the actual bleaching sessions, I just felt some sensitivity from the peroxide on the gumline, but nothing major. The dental assistant told me I would probably feel some sensitivity & zingers during the 2nd session. Actually, I didn't feel the zingers until about 10 minutes into the 3rd session. Afterward (as I drove from the dentist to work), I noticed the zingers a bit more often. The worst of it was over by about 1:00 pm, and honestly, the pain was not bad at all; basically, a sharp, shooting electrical-type pain that comes & goes very quickly every few minutes. I knew what to expect going into this; I do have sensitive teeth, so I expected much worse. I would definitely do it again. Oh, and I was given 400 mg of ibuprofen at the dentist's office prior to the procedure, and have since taken 440 mg of naproxen (Aleve) since...nothing stronger.

I had a Zoom whitening procedure done 4 weeks ago. I have suffered from swollen lips, blister type white spots and facial swelling. I have seen my dentist, my primary physcian and an oral surgeon. I have uesd vitamin E, steriod creams, a course of prednisone. All have have not helped. I suspect my symptoms are a result of exposure to high intensity UV lamp used during the Zoom procedure.

Man, I wish I had known this before I got mine done the other day.

Never, ever have I experienced such pain.
I was going to go to Accident & Emergency in the middle of the night it was so bad.
Ten ibuprofen did nothing, did not even dull the pain of this procedure.

I once had my teeth drilled before the dentist put anaesthetic on.
This was much worse and lasts a lot longer.
18 hours on and, while no longer in complete agony, I am still uncomfortable.

If it was just the throbbing and bearable pain I would say it's worth it, but the 'zings' as people put it are indeed akin to having electricity applied directly to the nerves of the teeth.
There's apparently no way to stop it, either.

Made it through half of the second session before screaming for someone to help me get this stuff off of my teeth! No one told me about the zingers or the fact that they're worse if you've had braces. I suffered for 12-14 hours of excruciating pain and my teeth were maybe one shade lighter. I paid $500 for pain. Thanks...appreciate it.

I did 4 cycles of Zoom whitening yesterday afternoon and I was completely fine! The only time I felt a zing was in the last minute of my 4th cycle. I will admit though, that night my bottom teeth hurt constantly. It felt like a dull ache. I took some advil and made my myself go to sleep, now this morning I am fine. I still can feel it a tiny bit every once and a while, but my hygenist told me any pain will be gone within 48 hours. I definitley think it is work it, my teeth look a lot whiter! I love it!

SHOOTING PAIN!!!!!!!!!!!! 6 hours after getting my teeth whitened at my dentist's using Zoom and I am in extreme pain. Can't sleep. A root canal might have hurt less. I'll probably have to call in sick in the morning. My dentist didn't even bother to warn me of the pain and prescribe pain killers. I wish I had read this message board before the treatment. The dentist should have paid me the $500 to get this done and not the other way around. Never again!

I had this done 4 hrs ago and am not best pleased. My teeth are white in some places but mostly blotchy looking, the pain is starting to subside now but only because I took 4 painkillers and about to take more.

I wish I read these reviews before going for the treatment, I definitely would have tried the white strips, which my colleague uses, which seem like a cheaper option and also a better option. Her teeth are whiter than mine now and she probably paid a fraction of the price!

I am frankly embarrassed to go into work tomorrow as most of my colleagues knew that I was going for teeth whitening treatment and eager to see the results, I don't even want to open my mouth tomorrow!

I am glad I got it for £329, rather than the full price - I would be seriously p!ssed if I'd paid more!

P.s. the dentist didn't put any after treatment on my teeth (as described by some reviewers here) which sounds like they cut corners... bunch of cowboys who I am definitely going to name and shame!

The results color wise are good. The swollen upper lip ( 4 times it's size ) is an awfull inconvenience which I was never warned off. The doctor said that he had no way of covering the upper lip ( he said he covered the lower one ) which leads me to think this is a dangerous procedure which exposes the lip to dangerous UV rays and submitts the patient to days of humiliating swollen lips. The procedure is very unconfortable, and I consider it usafe for the reasons aforementioned.
My labor day weekend is ruined, and I am not a happy camper. I would like to know is what was done in my case is safe , the issue of a fried upper lip.

Had Zoom done Friday morning. I THOUGHT I'd be going to work after it was over. HA! I was in so much pain!! When I went in for my consultation, the tech said she done 100 and maybe 5 had sensitivity. Well I guess I'm number 6! I was into my 4th session when a Zinger hit me in my lower teeth. Now that was pain. Then the zingers would come about every 5 minutes. They gave me 2 hyrdocondones and 4 advil. The pain kept coming. It did subside by the next day. I have a little blotching of whiteness. I like the results. I think it was worth it. I paid $470. That was with my insurance covering about $150 of it.

Just had zoom done 2 hours ago and the pain was so bad that I couldn't do all three sessions and had to stop after two. I dont have sensitve teeth but gosh do they hurt now. Teeth are a lot whiter but this is definitly not worth the shooting pain. Have taken 3 advil with a hydrocodone and still in terrible pain. My daughter wants this done after her braces come off and I don't think that will happen.
SO wish I had seen this site before I went and had it done.

I just had the treatment today and it worked great, and it should for 400 dollars. Ten minutes after the treatment i was in sever pain. I am still in pain and its 5 hours later. I jsut wish the 400 dollars came with an optional time machine so i could go back and never get this treatment, too much pain.

Read all the horror stories before getting Zoom done. Was a little worried, to say the least. Just finished having teeth cleaned followed by Zoom. Three fifteen min. sessions. Absolutely no Pain or Sensitivity. Had tray whitening in the past, and on occasion fell asleep w/trays still in my mouth.(Much more painful) Two hours post-Zoom and only a slight twinge. Would have to say that most of the horror stories posted, are more of operator error ie. dental hygenist not taking the time to properly protect your gums and lips. Would recomend this to any one wanting a pearly-white smile wo/ all the effort. Price was right, also. $300

my school offered a $167 dollar special for Zoom whitening so i bought it because i had seen it done on tv and it was much cheaper than normally advertised. I would NEVER EVER recommend doing this procedure, it is horribly painful. I only did two of my three fifteen minute sessions because i couldn't tolerate the pain. I was crying as i left the office, and now that i am home i can barely speak. The pain is awful, it moves from my upper teeth to my lower teeth and its like an electric shock in my mouth. I have taken three ibprofens, 2 tylenols and a nyquil (hopefully i'll be able to sleep tonight) and they have done NOTHING for this awful pain. AVOID zoom whitening!! i only wish i had read the reviews before purchasing it. It seems everyone is experiencing similar pain. totally not worth it, even though i got such a large discount. AVOID AVOID AVOID!!

ALL THE PAIN ABOVE IS SO VERY TRUE. I wished that I've researched before going through this process. Even if it's free, it is not worth the pain. The pain will travel from one tooth to another as if they are drilling into your tooth all day long and all night long. I would not recommend Zoom to any of my family member. SIDE-EFFECT: My upper lips have swollen to thumb side on top. My lips are in pain( it feels like my upper lip is majorly CHAPS). The pain is not worth it. Plus, it only change two shade. Please email me at Teknyc_79@hotmail.com if you have any further question. I paid $300.

I had Zoom done today and it was the most excruciating pain I have ever felt in my life. My dentist said "You may have some sensitivity and feel some "zings" during the procedure." It was more like have your teeth drilled for fillings without freezing. It started about 10 minutes into it and the last 2 minutes were so bad I almost jumped out of the chair and tears were streaming from my eyes. Zings? More like searing white hot pain that increases in intensity right down to the jaw and lasted for more than 30 seconds at a time. I didn't think I could go on, even just having the gel wiped off sent me through the roof, I was shaking so bad. I had to wait almost 10 minutes before I continued on the second run, I almost backed out but I ended up completing all 3 sessions. The 2nd and 3rd time were not as painful as the 1st time but the last 2 minutes of both sessions were intolerable.
After they gave me a high concentration flouride toothpaste which helps, and thru-out the day the pain has gotten better, I got maybe 1 or 2 painful shooting pains and hour, that just came on spontaneously.

I paid 350$ with the teeth trays for later, my results were more than 10 whiter, they look really good, a little chalky blothches that the dentist said would clear up in 48 hrs. I like the results but would NEVER do it again because of the pain. My dentist said she never had a patient that had these pain issues before..I don't know, I never had sensitivity before this....I think the main pain is from the heating up of the core of the tooth....I kept asking her why I kept smelling burning hair!!! (She said it was the bleach)

Well, you decide...

I'm sorry I didn't find this message board prior to me having the Zoom treatment done (yesterday). I will start by saying my teeth are whiter - significantly. This was ridiculously uncomfortable and painful, while still in the dentist's chair, not to mention what came afterwards. From start to finish took almost 3 hours. There is prep work and then 3 sessions of 20 minutes w/ the Zoom light (the really painful part) and then the cleaning up. It was so uncomfortable, my bottom lip felt like it was burning, not to mention the sensitivity you'd feel sporatically during the session (kinda like tin foil on filling in your mouth - not fun). They warned me that I could have sensitivity for the next few days, I have. My biggest issue was waking up in the middle of the night with my bottom lip as swollen as it possibly could be. I've iced it and it looks like it will blister. When in to show the dentist, they said they'd never seen anything like that before -- I am glad to see that someone else posted the same odd thing happening to them. Love the teeth -- but I would NEVER do this again -- I would not recommend it to anyone. Do the trays at home. This pain is nothing one should actually pay to have done to them.

i just had zoom today. i was very thrilled upon leaving the dentists office. my teeth were super white, but after about 4 to 5 hours they started to look the same as they did when i went in. plus, my teeth are BURNING with pain. this isnt fun and it wasnt worth the money. i am just glad it was on sale for 300 bucks, otherwise i would really be mad i spent the money. i am still angry though, because basically i paid for a mouth that looks the same but is in excruciating pain. my teeth BURN. they are ultra sensitive. i have taken 2 advil....still waiting for those to quick in. i would not do this again...NO WAY>

I've never been in such horrible pain. I just had the procedure done about 5 hours ago, and it's excruciating. I came online to see if anyone else had experienced the same! I was never told how awful the pain could be.

Sure, my teeth are white, but I'd pay the $600 again just to have the pain subside.
