The MetaTray is a professional take home teeth whitening system that merges all of the universally accepted methods of teeth whitening into a single system. Unlike other take home products that rely on carbamide peroxide and teeth contact time, the MetaTray also integartes an activating light, a heating element, and a unique gel foam application strip to deliver fast and effective results.
The control unit is rechargeable and has an LED timer which counts down a 20 minute bleaching session. The unit provides HEAT and LIGHT to the tray for actual bleaching catalysis and patient appeal. The mouth piece is detachable, allowing for custom fabricated trays to be used with the control unit. This also enables custom bleaching solutions to be used in that tray. The system is extremely well made and activated by a push button on the controller (which has a belt clip and a lanyard for easy use). The unit is universal, in that one mouthpiece fits most patients and the bleach is incorporated into a foam strip which is used once then disposed.

For those who insist that lights do augment bleaching, this feature is in the Metatray. Also, if you believe that blue light helps cure periodontal disease (like Britesmile claims) then you've got it with the Metatray. A sustained temperature of approximately 110 degrees F is generated by a heating element within the tray. That is the target temperature for the bleach as applied to the teeth. Since the heat is applied to the SURFACE of the teeth, the bleach is forced into the teeth.
The final retail amount is not known yet. But, the system is designed to be sold to patients to take home. The idea is to make it affordable for everyone. The actual use is for the patient to have it at home and to bleach for a 20 minute session, every day or as they like.
Like all other bleaching techniques, the effect can be permanent or relapse in time, dependent upon the type of stain. Usually touch-up bleaching will be required for continuation of the best results. That's why the patient will own the Metatray. They can use it anytime they like.
Because the teeth are bleached with a closed system, they are not allowed to dehydrate by prolonged exposure to the drying effects of air. The visual results of bleaching in this manner are usually actual bleaching of the tooth. The downside is that there is less of a dramatic wow effect that is seen with bleaching systems that dehydrate the teeth and initially look extremely white (for about 72 hours) until the teeth rehydrate and return to their regular shade. The upside is that you won’t complain about the lost whiteness.
There are two schools of thought on this. One says that the lights provide a focal point for the patient during the bleach application process and that it is psychological (provide excitement to an otherwise mundane procedure). The other says that tooth bleaching is actually more effective with the use of lights.
The potential is limitless. The Metatray is only an applicator. There are not many devices that apply all solutions to teeth. A toothbrush will rub a compound onto the teeth a small area at a time. A rinse will expose teeth to a solution for a short time. A tray will bath the teeth in a solution for an extended period. But the Metatray is the only device in the history of Dentistry that will apply a heated solution at a constant temperature in close contact with the teeth. This allows the application of not only bleaching products, but Flouride solutions to remineralize teeth, as well as other desensitizing compounds such as HEMA+Benzalkonium chloride and potassium nitrate solutions. Most any compounds designed to treat the dentition are likely to have enhanced effectiveness when delivered at elevated temperatures.
