BriteSmile Teeth Whitening System image

Britesmile Review

The BriteSmile Teeth Whitening System is manufactured by Discus Dental Inc (the makers of Zoom! Whitening) who purchased BriteSmile in January 2006 for 38 million. BriteSmile has a base of at least 700,000 customers. The brand should be familiar to you, since it is marketed aggressively through publications, radio, television, and the internet. Publications like CBS National, USA Today, The Oprah Magazine, InStyle and Teen Vogue have referred to BriteSmile on numerous occasions.

The Britesmile whitening treatments can be performed at either a dentist office or “whitening spa.”

Update 2/25/08
Discus Dental (operators of Zoom! Whitening) owns the in-office dentist version of BriteSmile. Ownership of the whitening spa boutiques have been kept by BriteSmile.

What are the advantages of BriteSmile?

BriteSmile guarantees that your teeth will be at least 9 shades lighter after the treatment. The entire procedure takes just over an hour to finish.

Are the BriteSmile teeth whitening spas trustworthy?

BriteSmile’s teeth whitening spas are renowned for their comfort and service. Customers watch television, listen to music or simply close their eyes and relax during the procedure. Certified dental professionals (not dentists!) take care to see that your teeth look bright and white.

What about the safety standards of BriteSmile?

Many medical studies have testified that BriteSmile’s whitening gel is safe for your mouth. The gel contains lower amounts of hydrogen peroxide as compared to other teeth whitening systems, so there is no burning sensation in the mouth during the procedure.

Is the whitening process painful for my teeth?

The low amounts of hydrogen peroxide ensure that the whitening process is a pleasurable and pain-free experience for the user.

What does BriteSmile use for the teeth-whitening procedure?

The BriteSmile system uses a LED light array delivery system along with a gentle whitening gel. The LED light emits a wavelength between 400 and 500nm, which gives it a bluish color. According to BriteSmile, the light in this wavelength activates a photo initiator built-in the tooth bleach, which in turn helps to speed up the bleaching process. The whitening gel is a 17% H2O2.

How can I maintain my teeth after the teeth whitening process is over?

After the completion of the teeth whitening procedure, customers are given BriteSmile whitening toothpaste. This toothpaste helps to prevent the teeth from staining again.

BriteSmile Whitening Spa locations can be found in:
California: Irvine, Beverly Hills, Palo Alto, San Diego, San Francisco, Walnut Creek Arizona: Phoenix , Colorado: Denver , Georgia: Atlanta , Illinois: Chicago, Schaumburg , Massachusetts: Boston , New York: New york (Soho & Madison Avenue) , Texas: Houston , Virginia: McLean

I placed my order over ten days ago, and a) I've yet to receive it or any update on my order; and b) the order was incorrect to begin with; I clicked on a starter kit, but they added items to my it after the fact.

Moreover, when you go to their website, there's no communication link or icon, to contact them.

I did the procedure 3 days ago and I feel great! My teeth changed their color from ugly yellow to nice and natural white in two hours!
A few weeks before the procedure I started using the toothpaste my dentist gave me. During the procedure I didn't feel any pain and my dentist told me that I was a lucky person! I managed to do 4 x 20 minutes.
When we finished I started feeling zingers, soon they disappeared, by constant pain appeared. With two painkillers (suggested by the dentist), I managed to survive that day. And already the next day everything was nice again, I had no pain, just my white teeth.

I had it done two months ago, the results were great and no pain at all. I think a lot has to do with the tech making sure gums are well protected. I had it done maybe 10 years and the pain was so bad I said I would never do it again but I smoke and drink tons of coffee so my teeth got really stained so I decided to go thru the pain again, told the dentist about the pain I went thru before and he said he cover my gums real well with protecting gel and like I said no pain at all.

TEARS WERE WELLING UP IN MY EYES FROM THE PAIN. i CAN TAKE PAIN BUT THIS WAS EXCRUATIATING. THREE HOURS LATER I AM IN DISCOMFORT BUT NOT PAIN. i HAD

does anyone know if the trays they provide for you will continue to whiten your teeth or is it just for maintenance?

I got my teeth whitened with BriteSmile earlier today. Today was my second time, four days ago I had 3 of the 20 minutes sessions, today had the same sessions (3*20min). My teeth are brighter but not sooo much just few shades, and after this second time I got terrible pain. Dentist has recommended me one more appointment, because here they recommend three sessions to achieve good results. I'm a little confused, because all of you who went you went only once (3*20 or 4*20min) ?! And I can not believe how much cheaper it is in Serbia, two treatments are $ 80, you get a third free.

I felt like I needed a vanity boost so I booked an appointment at a dentist in Manhattan to get the treatment. They asked if i had any teeth sensitivity issues and I have never had any, so we went ahead. The set-up was tedious, but I figured that was part of the deal. The first 20 minute treatment I felt some warmth on the side of my face, but no other side effects. After 15 minutes into the second treatment though, I started to feel the zingers. I called the technician and she said that it's normal and if I can bear it I should try to finish the treatment. I beared through it for another 5 minutes but they got worse. I asked if I should stop, but they said that the real difference comes from the 2nd and 3rd session. I regret not stopping because after about 2 minutes I was in pain again, and I had to stop. The zingers were terrible, and lasted until midnight that night (I ended the treatment at 4:30). The next day I had a feeling in my mouth like I had eaten a hot pizza out of the oven. I called the doctor and they said the pain would last for four days and to take advil. It's a week later and I'm still occasionally getting a random zinger here and there. I am going to call the dentist again and ask if they did some permanent damage to me. I would never recommend this treatment to someone - yes, my teeth were whiter (but not perfect because I couldn't finish) but the pain I felt, and still feel is not worth it.

What a difference it made. I have been a heavy smoker, grew up on well water and moderate coffee drinker for 30 years and this really worked for me. My teeth were on the yellow base side and not the grey base. I believe the technicians did the best job of making sure my gums were sealed off and they checked me frequently for any pain that may start. Thanks Broadmoor Dental!

I had a little bit that whitened my gum above my front tooth, but it was back to normal in less than 3 hrs. I did have a slight rolling feeling in my teeth, but it wasn't unpleasant. I had a few zingers but I just had a real quiet evening after the procedure and have no zingers this morning.

I did prep for the procedure by using sensodyne toothpaste for about a week and also used Biotene dry mouthwash. The mouthwash can also help re-hydrate the teeth afterward. I also premedicated with a couple of Aleve prior to the procedure because previous reads said it was painful.

They are nice and white and I hope it lasts for a while because it was pricey. I did receive a $200 discount.

I had wanted to whiten my teeth for a while and finally went for it today (so this is a review written 8 hrs after treatment). If you get someone skilled behind the machine they should thoroughly cover your gums and mouth with a protective gel and use the bite plate to separate your lips from coming into contact with the bleach so your gums or lips should not be affected. However during the first 20 minutes I got a somewhat painless rolling feeling from one side of my mouth to the other and during the last 20 minute session I got a big zing. After the procedure I got several more zings which absolutely made me miserable because I brought on that pain for vanity... I haven't taken painkillers and the zings are subsiding and getting less intense. My teeth were already kinda white but I did this procedure to try to blend the tooth color in with these bright white calcium spots I've had since childhood. So far to no avail... My guess it a shade or two whiter. For the hundreds of dollars and the little zings of pain I don't really think I'd recommend it. Will update this review if the condition changes in the next few days.

I read the reviews as i was doing my first treatment. Actually stopped it early because it was getting uncomfortable. Right now pain is at maybe a 4 out of 10. I've only been done for about 30 minutes tho. I am super nervous about what's to come! Think I'll toss the remainder of the solution. To be fair, i really didn't give the product a chance to work. It IS uncomfortable, tho not unbearable. Hopefully that's as bad as it gets. It was very easy to apply.

I'm in India on vacation and decided to do this cause it was cheaper than where I live. My teeth are sensitive (hot/cold) to start and this has increased their sensitivity a bit but nothing like what people are saying here. It's not horrible. Maybe I'm used to the sensitive pain. Been using Sensodyne for years, maybe my teeth are conditioned. Also, only one ZING and it's been 2 hours since i left the dentist. I did three 20-minute cycles. Felt some heat and light pain during. Teeth are definitely whiter and that's all that matters!

I got bright smile yesterday,it was the worst experience i do not recommend it to anyone. It was so painful my gums felt like burning in most places, and after the procedure i started having these electric shock pain that makes you jump along with very bad pain that lasted around eight hours but still have sensitivity to every thing i eat and drink.
I would never never do that again not worth it. I felt that those chemicals used is so damaging to the gums and teeth and i got minimum result.

I have never experienced a more horrific pain, discomfort and 'electric shocks' type of pain bursts in my teeth.

It was awful and even if I had strong painkillers, the effect was unbearable for 1-2 days after the procedure.

It has to do with the chemicals they use.

If you want to achieve the same result, there are many alternatives on the market, however it would be common sense to think that if you use something with a lower dosage over a longer period of time, you will achieve the same results.

I had the procedure done about 8 hours ago, and my teeth look beautiful but the pain is quite awful! My bottom middle 4 teeth ache non-stop! I am a pretty tough cookie but I would like to warn people, if you do this, ask for some pain pills... Ibuprofen doesnt touch the pain... ZINGERS= DEADLY SHOOTING PAIN! I hope this goes away soon and I have confidence it will! I also trust my dentist did everything he could and I support his work still. I believe this problem is due to the chemicals produced by the company!

AGAIN: I DID NOT ASK FOR PAIN PILLS AND WISH I HAD... ASK AND THE PROCEDURE IS WONDERFUL!!

Santa actually purchased the Brite Smile treatment for me in about 2000 because I didnt smile enough for his liking. My teeth were fine, pain was tolerable as the hygeinist used gel to protect my lips and gums from the bleaching compound and only experienced a few instances of 'zing' pain following the treatment which was relieved with a simple use of sensodyne toothpaste or any flouride toothpaste and ibuprofen. My teeth were about 12 shades whiter than initial and I have trays to maintain the treatment outcome. Brite smile only does the facing surface of the tooth, the trays actually lightened the back of the tooth to the same white shade over time the front has. My teeth maintain the whiteness with occasional use of the trays and routine cleanings at the dentist. Would I recommend it? Yes, I was happy of the quick outcome and honestly, could probably have purchased the trays and lightening agent from the dentist and done the same for half as much $.

I had mine done in 2008 and loved the results. I should say that my teeth were in beautiful condition and in the white category before the treatment. I just wanted them whiter. I tend to have sensitive teeth so my dentist had my brush my teeth with Sensodine toothpaste with fluoride for two weeks before the procedure.
I didn't have any sensitivity what-so-ever after the procedure. As a matter of fact they missed a few places between my teeth so I went back three weeks later and had them redo that area (they did it for free and it took half the time of the original). Still, I had not sensitivity and I tend to have sensitive teeth.
After reading all of these reviews, sounds like your dentist didn't tell you to use the Sensodine toothpaste. That has to be the reason I didn't experience the pain the rest of you did.

I had this procedure done and it took a little over an hour. The results were great and my teeth were about 7-8 shades lighter. There was some pain and sensitivity afterwards when I left the office, but this was expected. It didn't last long and was sporadic. Great procedure.

Can't understand all the complaints and attribute this to improper procedure. The product, if applied correctly, is very effective. No question.

I had a BriteSmile treatment done back in 1999, and I had wonderful results. No pain, no problems. I'm disappointed to read about these terrible results. I will not be returning for another treatment. There is nothing worse than continued, throbbing, excruciating tooth pain. Thanks to all who posted--I'm sorry to hear about your bad experiences.

I had this procedure performed yesterday. I sat through four twenty minute sessions. The hygienist asked me to rate the pain on a scale of 1-10 during and after each session. The first two were easy, during the third I experienced some discomfort, on the fourth it shot up to an eight out of ten and was becoming unbearable. I only paid $120 for the treatment because I bought it through Groupon, otherwise it would have been $600. The results were impressive, my teeth are now brighter by eight shades. The areas of my gums which came into contact with the gel turned white and were quite painful, this morning the tissue fell away with the touch of a finger revealing bloody red tissue beneath, they didn't tell me about this possibility. My teeth are extremely sensitive 16 hours after the procedure and I'm wondering if the side effects are going to be permanent. I would strongly discourage anyone from undergoing this procedure.

I expressed pain during the 1st 20 minute session and the Dr. assured me that it was normal. By the end of the 2nd 20 min session I had had enough. The pain was horrible. I could not take the 3rd session. He had to give 4 or 5 novocane shots to numb the area. I was told it is very rare for that to happen, makes no difference to me though.......Luckily i got some vicodin from him to get me through the night, and those painfull 'Zingers' have subsided after about 8hrs.

I did get results, My teeth are whiter, but I will never do that again!

Either I am lucky or in for a surprise. I was looking for pointers on after care as I just got this done at a dentist almost 2 hours ago (like a poster above, they offered a groupon). My teeth are much whiter and I have no pain even though a little bleach did get on my top gums and cause (they say temporary) discoloration in the front of my mouth. I was smart enough to know there might be issues and not do it when I had to go anywhere important for a day or 2. I think it looks really good so far. That said, I would never do this again just because of the process at all as I have sinus/allergy problems and all that stuff in my mouth for an hour and a half was not any fun.

I am surprised this is offered by reputable dentists without warnings about the sorts of things described here though. So far so good for me but I'll re-post if pain starts later. Actually, I did just get my first "zinger" just before I finished writing and that was mighty unpleasant. If that's what people have had for 12 hours, yikes. Anyway, took some advil just in case (almost went for my percoset based on these reads) but will repost if pain comes on later.

I had this done four years ago prior to getting crowns on my upper teeth. I only had one treatment in the dentist's office and it cost me just over $1,000. Aftgerwards, he gave me a box of gels and a customized mold of my teeth to use once every two weeks or so. Although I didn't experience pain from the office treatment, I just about hit the roof after the at-home touch up. It got so bad (a really deep, intense ache) that I had to take codeine. My teeth were definitely lighter after the office treatment but it didn't last long and I was too scared to use the home stuff again. I've tried a few products since (and have a new set of crowns) and have settled on Love That White Smile. I do actually have some gum recession on my lower teeth and think this may have contributed to the pain.

As a kid, I asked my dentist why my teeth didn't look white. He told me that my teeth are naturally yellow, but other than that, he praised that they were perfectly straight and excellent teeth. Now as an adult, I never brought up that question with any dentist. I guess I got caught up in all the teeth-whitening hype because I went ahead and got the Britesmile procedure done. The procedure unfortunately did not work for me. I suppose my teeth are a paler shade of yellow, but yellow nonetheless. The experience was uncomfortable, but I was treated very well and the techs were very thorough. In all, I was there for a little over 2hrs due to the thorough prep and post work the techs did. I know now that I will never have teeth and a confident smile unless I get veneers put on. This simply is not an option for me financially as veneers cost several thousand dollars in the least. I am disappointed that nothing can be done about it, but I gave it a try anyway. It was a very expensive experiment as I paid the retail $600.

I think that people with stained teeth due to tobacco, coffee, etc might have some success with this procedure. I think premise behind the whole thing is pretty sound, and could produce immediate results as apposed to whitening strips or paste. Those products probably work decently, but their is not instant gratification like a procedure done at a dentists office could provide. Hope others have better luck than I did.

I had a brite smile treatment 4 years ago. I was pleased with the results and had minimum pain. I decided to try it again. Same dental office, different person doing the treatment. The results were horrific.......minimum whitening, maximum pain. The person talked about some solution on my gums...this didn't happen the first time. I don't know if it was the brite smile or person doing the treatment. I do kinow pain plus poor results mean this was my last time. What a mistake!!!! Ask questions before you have this done. After you get the answers, run!

I got my teeth whitened with Brightsmile earlier today. A local dentist offered the treatment for $150 through Groupon. It was a great deal! I had 4 of the 20 minute sessions. My teeth are VERY white! I love the results. I didn't suffer any discomfort during the procedure. However, it is now 9 hours later and my teeth are killing me! The pain started about an hour after I left the office. I've taken several pain killers and have had no relief. My teeth look great, but this pain is awful.

asked that my Christmas gift from my Parents and Hubby be cash to help pay for the BriteSmile proceedure. I went to a reputable dentist who charged just under $500 for the session. After the three 20 minute treatments, he told me the results were so fantastic he wanted to do a 4th, since I couldnt see anything I imagined model white beautiful teeth and couldnt wait, so I agreed. When he handed me my before and after poloroid photo I wanted to cry! There was NO difference in the photo, nor to my teeth, but the receptionist kept smiling and telling me how great they looked. The winter wind almost brought me to my knees in pain, and I wasnt able to drink anything for about 2 days but that quickly faded...not a single person noticed a difference...not surprising since there was none! In my case this was a total waste of money and chemicals in my body for nothing...

I used it and it was ok. I di dnot have the best results, but they were good. I also tried a mobile teeth whitener called Sensational Smiles, maybe it was becasue i used them after BriteSmile but the results were much better. I am going to try BriteSmile again next time to see if it made a difference going to someone before them. But I was very happy with Sensational Smiles Mobile Teeth Whitening in Arizona.

Had 3 20 minute sessions completed today, finishing at around 1530. It is now 2126 and I am approaching 6 hours of wretched burning/stabbing/shooting nerve pain. After about 6 hours of research I've found that the pain is caused by the dehydration of the teeth - the gums slip back and reveal the sensitive layer of dentin. Basically, it is hell. Horrible, nauseating, life-stopping PAIN. It was only sensitive for me during the last 20 minute session with a couple "zingers". Then the ride home produced a few more "zingers" until my whole damn mouth was one giant "ZINGER". Zinger is just an inadequate word. A word of advice - the best thing you can do to speed healing, besides having an MD that'll get you some good meds, is to invest in a bottle of Biotene mouthwash. It is for dry mouth, but it helps to restore the gums, covering the dentin, and remineralizing the teeth a little more quickly. To anyone else going through this right now, I feel for you - I wouldn't wish this horrible procedure on my worst enemy. I would comment on the efficacy of it, but it is so worthless to me at the moment in light of how painful it is. I hope that says something to you all...

Tried this product a while back and ended up overdosing on tylenol to help me get over the pain - felt like a i ripped my tooth out with plyers and then bit on a cube of ice. Im more a fan of the everyday whitening toothpastes that are both affordable and effective (if used regularly).

WHen I was working in OZ for a couple of years I got hooked and a really great product down there called White Glo - definitely the best teeth whitening product I have tried. Tasted good, did the job and didnt brerak the budget. I did a bit of research before i tried White Glo, but over there it was voted the best whitening toothpaste in an independent survey. The fact I could buy it any supermarket and drug store gave me a bit of confidence. Now Im back in the states I simply do an annual order through their website http://www.whiteglo.com - buying in bulk makes its even cheaper.

Because Im a bad smoker i like their smokers formula. WHen combined with the express whitening kits, I managed to remove the yellow stains I was getting. Comes with a cool tooth brush and these aweseome dental floss pickers as a bonus.

thats my 2 cents :)

Had Britesmile treatment this morning and although pleased with the whitening results, the gum and tooth pain is excruciating. In fact this is the most acute pain I have ever experienced and 800mg of Ibuprofin is having no effect. I think patients should be made fully aware of the post procedure pain. In my case I was told I may experience a few "zingers" and take aspirin. This is a gross and misleading understatement. If you are considering Britesmile please don't underestimate the incredible post procedure pain.

Well, after reading the comments, I will not opt to go to Westport, Conn to get my teeth done.

I was at the dentist today in Massachusetts and he begged me NOT to do it. He told me, as much as he loves making money off people like you guys, Crest Strips work just as well and safer. NO PAIN.

Thanks for the write ups.

I got my teeth whitened at 330PM well its 11:38PM AND MY TEETH ARE KILLING ME! I can not sleeeepp!! I looked online to find tips on aching teeth and ran across this and I couldn't agree more with their reviews.. My teeth are maybe a shade better and im sure it will go away in a few days.. Place sucks. Seriously do something different other people have more luck with other places that are not britesmile... clearly.

I've been wanting to get this done but was horrified after reading some of these comments about pain and bad results.

I went ahead and got it done anyway actually today and my teeth are ABSOLUTELY gorgeus. IDK if im lucky but I feel no pain what so ever. Well actually my jaw is a bit soar from opening it for 2hrs straight but not like the pain described in some reviews for like 12hrs. I feel bad for those poor darlings.

Im so excited that Ive stupidly decided not to eat for 2 days in order to maintain my beautiful results!!! Pray for me to have the strength to refuse food;)

Ok so i just got mine done a couple of hours ago. ANd holy shit! I am like dieing here! Its not even funny. My teeth are also not as white as i expected, and its not giving an even shade of white. Im regretting doing this, seriously. When i talk, im in pain. When i dont, i still AM in pain. Sometimes it feels like there little knives stabbing you inside the teeth. It is hurting reaaaaaaaaaaaaal bad. I wished i had researched on this. With the pain im havng, i think im going to have to pull an all-nighter. Very disappointed, i must say.
