Sapphire Teeth Whitening System Review

The Sapphire Whitening system is made by Den-Mat - they are the same makers as Lumineers. The system used to be called the Rembrandt Sapphire In-Office Whitening System, but was renamed when Den-Mat sold the Rembrandt line to Oral-B. This system uses a very powerful Sapphire Plasma Arc Light along with a professional grade teeth whitening gel.

There are over 4,000 dentists currently using the Sapphire Professional Whitening System today. Approximately 250,000 patients have undergone this whitening treatment. The whitening system can be used with the Sapphire light or without it.

Two studies were done by Den-Mat to compare the bleaching process with and without light. The same subjects received gel alone and gel with the light for the same contact time. More whitening resulted on the sides with the gel and light.

According to Den-Mat, the light assists the bleaching process in two ways. Sapphire’s bleach formulation absorbs light in the blue end of the spectrum, which becomes excited and decomposes into reactive intermediators that attack the colored compounds that form stains on teeth. In addition, the absorption of blue light serves to activate the colored stain materials absorbed on the teeth. These photo activated materials are quite reactive and their reaction with hydrogen peroxide results in faster bleaching. Based on this study, using the light with the bleach generally gives an additional 2-5 shades. However, there are also independent studies which show the lights to not do anything.

How does the combination of the gel and the sapphire light work?

The 35% H2O2 gel is first applied to your teeth. The sapphire light activates the gel and propels the stain removal process.

How much time does the teeth-whitening procedure take?

The teeth whitening procedure takes about 30 minutes to complete. It is one of the fastest In-office whitening procedures.

Does Sapphire have an at-home kit?

Yes, Sapphire gives an at-home kit that has custom fitted trays. Depending on the condition of your teeth, the at-home kit may take from a few days to two months to give your teeth luster and brightness. The trays are pliable and tabbed.

How safe is the Sapphire whitening system?

The bleaching gel is thick and stays stable at the ‘teeth areas’ of the trays. Thus, it does not drip over to the gums. While Den-Mat claims there is a desensitizing agent to reduce tooth sensitivity, many dentists have found that some patients have experienced severe post sensitivity after whitening (up to 12-18 hours). Ibuprophen or Naproxen will help if there is any post-sensitivity.

Where can I get Sapphire Teeth Whitening Done?

Currently, the Sapphire procedure can only be done through a licensed dental office.

After, I removed my braces 3 years ago I decided to get my teeth bleach. I had the ZOOM bleaching and it was the worst experience ever!!!!! My gums had blisters and my teetn were in so much pain it lasted 3 weeks!! But I must admit that my teeth were super white after the treatment.
Anyways last year (2012) I came accross this Shappire Teeth whitening Ad I figure I'd try it. It was nice I experienced no pain but my teeth didn't change color much like ZOOM. A few days ago I had another treatment a little pain once again the results weren't noticable. I thought I would give it another chance but not a great turn out.

I just had my teeth whitened today. The procedure was not very comfy with all the stuff in your mouth but I did not experience any pain. After the procedure I've had several 'zingers', they are painful but bearable.

My teeth were not too yellow to begin with, I think they were the 5th shade on the chart. My new shade is lighter than all the samples they had, I was 'off the charts'. BUT because they put the gum protector on, on the top of my teeth there is a yellow line that has not been bleached. I am not so sure about this. They said they had to do that to protect the gums and that I could get whitening strips to even it out. Too bad I did this procedure so I didn't have to do the at home stuff.

READ THESE REVIEWS!!! BURNS LIKE HELL!!!!! THEY ONLY GIVE RESULTS FOR A FEW WEEKS OR MAYBE MONTHS IF LUCKY!!!!! YOU NEED CUSTOM FITTED TRAYS CALL YOUR DENTIST AND ASK HIM!!! www.whitersmilelabs.com is a MUST see site because I am Dentist, and must let you know that all the hype over these strips of tape is just crazy, it is tape that goes over your teeth, there is no way possible for them to reach in between your teeth so if you do get results, you will look like you have stains in the joints, or inbetween the teeth.. you need a properly made custom tray that is made in a certified lab. look into a place like www.whitersmilelabs.com they send you the impresssion kit, you send them back, and in a matter of3-4 days you have trays jsut like we offer in -office, any one in the Texas area, just google Dentist Rob adn you will see I know I am talking about, I do know that this company gets tehre products and gels from one of my suppliers and they are all made in the USA. I just got the procedure done and BAM!!! 7 shades lighter and a Hollywood smile. I have sensitive teeth to start with, but it was totally comfortable. This feels very similar to the at home bleaching stuff, as far as pain. I have my white teeth back from when I was a kid... Very happy even though pricey. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Had procedure done yesterday. Refused to pay over $300, so waited for a Groupon ($99). Definitely worth that price! Very happy with results, got two shades brighter with two 30 minute sessions. Based on reviews and the warning about zingers, I took 800mg Motrin prior to going to dentist and another 200 once I was in the chair. Did not experience any problems while in the chair other than boredom (dozed off the first 30 minutes). Have gotten just a few zingers since then and teeth are not abnormally sensitive to cold or heat. Biggest problem I have experienced is a swollen top lip. No blisters thankfully, but definitely feels raw. Took another motrin for the discomfort, a benydryl for the swelling and applied a lot of lip balm to keep lip moist. Swelling went down pretty quickly and have just a little discomfort. Overall, I'm very happy with the results!

I did the Sapphire Teeth Whitening and so far am very happy with the results. My main complaint is with the pain. The process itself was fairly painless, just boring because you have to sit with your mouth open for an hour. I only experience 3 short "zingers" and the pain was totally bearable.

About 4 hours after the procedure, however, my teeth all started aching and I am now in pretty bad pain. 3 tylenols later and still in pain. If you have a low tolerance for pain, really think about if having whiter teeth is worth it. I'm not sure it's worth the pain.

Great procedure. I highly recommend. I was able to change 2-3 shades. Teeth are a little sensitive but that will go away. I've tried the Rembrant at-home trays and that's a joke compared to the Sapphire. The procedure takes a hour not thirty minutes. Highly recommend!!

Well for the two thirty minute sitting sessions I expected to see at least one or two shades whiter, no luck. A little blotchy, my teeth look very clean but I had them cleaned last week. Lorena was very nice and she informed the Doc. that there was not much of a difference. He gave me trays and 3 syringes of a different brand whitening gel. I was told to try it for a month. I hope that does the trick. Lorena assured me that If I was not satisfied after one month or there was no change, that they would remedy my situation. I was recommended by my daughter who was recommended by my sister, neither of whom have had the whitenning done. I look forward to whiter teeth. To be continued......

im on here because im googling sensitivity from teeth bleaching. Im putting prevident on the bottom 3 teeth every 10 mins. Ive already had 4 ibuprofen. Id like a pain pill but i have to drive to work soon. Its too early to review the results but does any one have good remedies for sensitivity- The dentist offered little advice..It feels like they (my bottom row) are on fire. I hope this subsides quickly.

Amazingly whiter teeth than before the procedure.

I did experience 'zingers' during the procedure which subsided within 1-2 seconds. I do not consider myself to have sensitive teeth. However, I do have exposed dentin on my lower teeth which probably contributed to the 'zingers' and the mild discomfort I have experienced for the 12-16 hours after the procedure. Nothing that ibuprofen did not alleviate.

The only issue that that I would consider out of the ordinary arose was that some of the bleach seeped under the mouth extender and burned my lower lip (extra sensitive this morning.)

The bottom line is that I would have the procedure done again and it was well worth the money I spent.

Sapphire whitening worked great for me. I had yellow teeth from drinking coffee for 20 years, plus sodas, red wine, etc. I would say they are hollywood white right now, but I just had it done yesterday and I know that they darken a little bit after a couple of days. I didn't tell my boyfriend I was getting it done, and when I came home he said "did you get your teeth whitened?" That's when I knew it was very noticeable - exactly what I wanted. Now I'm not embarrassed about my smile and keep going to the mirror and smiling just to see my teeth. The DOWNSIDE: I didn't feel any sensitivity while having it done with the exception of one zinger near the end of the process. However, I started to feel it while driving home and about 3 hrs after I was in pretty bad pain. It does hurt. I am still sensitive today but not half as bad as yesterday. I was just laying there holding my face wishing it would stop. I even took a sleeping pill just so I could sleep the pain away. However, now that the bad pain is gone I really do think it is worth it. I would definitely recommend Sapphire over the more widely used Zoom because Sapphire is specifically formulated to not be as harsh and painful as Zoom. Just go read their horror stories for yourself and you'll see.

I had the Sapphire Whitening treatment done 3 days ago. The treatment lasted about 1.5 hours, from start to finish. I did not have any discomfort during the procedure. When the assistant rinsed my mouth afterwards I was really sensitive to the cold water. I had intermittent pain for about 12 hours after the procedure, but ibuprofen gave me relief. I am now using the trays & gel at home. Overall, my teeth are much whiter than before. I was a big coffee drinker. My tooth color lightened about 7 shades. I am hoping for more dramatic results from the trays. I am pleased with the results and would do it again.

I recently (Nov. 19, 2010) had the Sapphire whitening done in my dentist office. The procedure took 3 hours. I have been doing the treatments at home and have had some sensitivity and the roof of my mouth has been dry which has now gone away. I had been doing the at-home for 30 minutes an was doing well and then increased to 45 and then 60 minutes. Going the longer time I think maybe what caused by dry mouth. I have gone back to just 30 minutes and am working my way up again thinking maybe I went to 60 minutes to soon. I see the dentist next week and hopefully the whitening has continued. I am not a smoker but do drink the occasional tea or soda with a straw but I am still seeing some areas that could be whiter. However, maybe they can't get any whiter but I am very pleased with what I have so far and feel it was reasonable costs for what I got. I love my smile now!

The procedure cost me $350 for the in-office treatment.

It started by having molding clay pressed over my teeth to make the custom fit whitening trays for the at home whitening after the in-office treatment.

Next a protective mouth guard was placed to keep my mouth open so the bleach would stay off the tissue in my mouth (Including tongue).

Then a protective gel was placed and hardened on my gums so the bleach would not burn them.

Then a desensetizing gel was placed on my teeth. Two pieces of cloth were placed over my lips and lip baum rubbed on my lips to protect them from the treatment light.

Then the procedure began with an application of bleach in 15 minute intervals for 3 rounds totaling 45 minutes.

I did not experience any pain during the treatment, but it is not very comfortable to sit there with your mouth open for 45 minutes.

After the treatment was complete I did experience some severe sensitivity and random shooting pains in the teeth that were bleacched. I documented 8 shooting pains (Mostly in my bottom front teeth) in the first hour after treatment. I documented another 4 shooting pains another hour after that. And finally I documented 2 final shooting pains over the course of two hours after that. So all in all it was four total hours of random shooting pains, each shot would last roughly 1-3 seconds. Bare in mind I do not usually have senstive teeth. For those people with more sensitive teeth you could experience worse.

I did not eat or drink anything for roughly 12 hours after the procedure, mostly out of fear that I would trigger further shooting pains and sensitivity. To my surprise and delight I was able to eat a turkey and swiss sandwich with water without any additional pain at the 12 hour marker. I did have a slight sensation of sensitivity while eating for the first time, but no pain.

After 24 hours my teeth were only moderately sensitive. I was able to brush my teeth with an electric toothbrush (Oral B 5000 Series) without any pain or discomfort, which was an excellent sign of recovery.

After 36 hours my teeth felt normal again. So take into account it will take roughly 1-3 days to recover depending on your personal circumstances.

I do not know if my experience is typical. This is my first time whitening my teeth. I was very happy with the results and look forward to the in home treatment for more results. The cost and pain will make me think twice before ever doing this again.

I think this is a great product, and it worked very well, BUT I ended up with a condition called "leukopedia" which is white spots and leasions on my tongue and cheeks. That was 7 months ago, and I'm still trying to find a Dr. that can help me with this condition.

I went to the dentist two days ago and had excellent results with the rembrandt whitening system my dentist had used on my teeth. The process had taken approximately one hour, and a light was also used for this process. My gums were very sensitive due to this process, but it was well worth it. the total cost of the procedure was $425.00 which included the in office whitening process, along with the Sapphire Whitening System for at home use. I am very pleased. If you are from New Jersey and are looking for a dentist who will do this procedure at a reasonable cost, contact Dr. Collado who is located on Palisade Avenue in Union City, NJ. You won't regret it!!!!!!

I just got one session done at my dentist, it did not hurt at all. I saw a change just from that 3-5 minutes with them on. I will use them religiously every day, and I believe I will see a difference. Was not that expensive, I don't know why some reviewers are paying $300+ for it :S and another one paid $50? Don't get duped people! Do your research and ask questions.

I had my teeth whitened at the dentist... went thru the whole thing fine and dandy.. i did get a bleach stain on my gums but that quickly went away in a day or two. I did feel the zing sensation from the sensitivity of my teeth but that went away in a day or two also. If you do not wanna feel the zing pop an ibuprofen.. and if its undbearable they may have overbleached your teeth. I believe this program works gradually and not directly in just one day... the take home trays really help too. I had some pretty yellow teeth i think and it got a bit brighter though i did not notice when i first looked at it but after an hour or so i really noticed it. I KEEP THE SHINE BY SWISHING WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE AND I NOTICE THE BRIGHTNESS EVERYDAY. In the end I pretty much got what I paid for. But I also think whitening can have better results then again it really depends on your teeth (oral makeup) on how it performs.

OWW!!

I called the dental office to schedule the appointment and told the receptionist I was looking for ZOOM! whitening. She informed me that Sapphire was the newest thing from ZOOM! (apparently not true)

They were running a special so I scheduled my appointment for the same day and I asked and was told I would receieve a consultation before the procedure (as I researched and that would be standard practice). (I did not recieve said consultation.)

It hurt pretty much the whole time but I was thinking, "No pain, no gain." I wasn't given a mirror to look at my teeth at any time after the procedure, although nearly everyone who worked there came in to check them out. On my way out, while I was paying I was finally given my before-and-after photos--the first time I saw my "whitened" teeth--and informed that some of the bleaching gel had gotten on my gums (very noticeable) and bleached them but that this would "slough off" in 24 hours or so. (not true)

It's now a day later and my teeth still aren't noticeably whiter. My gums are red and inflamed in more than just the areas that were accidentally bleached yesterday. I am going to call and see what can be done to remedy this situation as I am very dissatisfied with the results: very little change in teeth color (I was told it would be 7-10 shades and it's maybe 2), serious pain, gum issues.

NOT WORTH IT!!

Can you say "ZING".. man, that sensitivity zing is awful. If I knew it was going to be like that I would not do it. 3 c- sections and no problems... This was bad, like the 4th of July in my mouth and you cannot anticipate where it will zing next... I took tylenol codeine which I did not need from the csection but needed for this... and it helps moderately. Did I tell you that my teeth did not get that white? Well, hopefully it will be better tomorrow.

I just had my teeth bleached by my dentist using the Saphhire Professional Whitening System two days ago. Overall, I am pleased with the result. The product even lightened a front tooth that was initially darkened by a root canal! My dentist did a great job as I did not suffer any physical injury due to the procedure. She did warn me about the sensitivity; however, I did not experience any discomfort during the process (just a lot of drooling with my mouth held open for over an hour). Nevertheless, about three hours after the work was completed, my teeth hurt so bad, I simply could not stand it! It was awful! I called my dentist immediately the same day and she prescribed ibuprofen with hydrocodone. The pain subsided in less than twenty four hours. I get my impressions and trays made next week. Was it worth the cost ($250)? Yes. Was it worth the pain and discomfort? I am not so sure.

I am very pleased with my results. just had it done this morning. My teeth were at the bottom portion of the scale for yellow. :( But now they are right up at the top and you can clearly see in a before and after picture that I took that the difference is amazing. My procedure didn't hurt, I even feel asleep!!! My doctor took careful consideration to protect my lips with a proteloem jelly and rehydrated my teeth like 4 times during the procedure.

I had this procedure done last week and love the results. The dentist says most of the whitening is done with the take home trays and the chairside procedure there is just a boost. I received my trays today and cant wait to get started. I did not have any pain with this at the time and I have always had very sensitive teeth. About an hour afterwards I did experience a few zings but it was no worse than cold water is on my other sensitive teeth. I was told that when using my trays to make sure to use Q-tips to wipe away any excess on my gums and that I could use it up to 5 minutes at a time. Looking forward to my Hollywood smile!!

Your supposed to wear them for 12 days, so I'm on day 7 so far. No luck yet. I am very disappointed. My teeth were not very yellow to begin with, but I am not seeing any difference. I went this morning and got the whitening procedure done. I have to say that it did not hurt while getting it done, but afterward, I did experience some very painful zings. my teeth are very sensitive right now, but it should go away and is not unbearable. the biggest downfall to this is that my teeth are very splotchy. they do not look evenly white. ill have to wait a few days and see if it evens out. I only paid 250. which seems cheap compared to other treatments, so I cant complain too much.

I have only had the take home kit/trays for a week now..seems to be working pretty good. My teeth are not super duper white, but they are white-er (were light yellow). I was sent with 8 syringes and am on the 3rd one. I was told it should last me about a year...umm that part was wrong. (and fyi..you can get the refills online cheaper than at the dentists office =)). Maybe it just depends on the person. The first time my gums stung because of the peroxide on the gums, but you just have to control how much gel you put in your tray to minimize that (or put petroleum jelly on your gums beforehand). I think the price is a little much, but crest white strips hurt my teeth, so at this point I will do whatever it takes to get the whitening without the sensitivity. Good Luck.

I think the Sapphire systme does a mediocre job. I did notice a difference in my teeth but not quite as much as I had hoped for for the money. I am now using the at home trays....hopefully this will improve the results.

I did not experience the pain and so on that others have mentioned. I had one zing during the first 15 minutes and the tech immediately removed the light and bleach from that tooth and applied some more gel for sensitivity. Other than that it was painless and I had no pain afterwards either. I am thinking maybe some dentists offices are not performing the procedure properly for those who are blistering and so on.... It took one hour of with the light and every 15 minutes the light was removed and the bleach was reactivated. It really wasn't bad at all.
I feel sorry for those of you who had horrible experiences but I honestly believe that was an error on your dentist or tech's techniques with the procedure.

Phenomenal! I moved 12 shades. My teeth are white as white can be. A little sensativity but I expected that. No burns, blisters etc as mentioned above. Seems to me that wasn't the "procedure" as much as the Dentist that performed it. I am very pleased and will recommend this procedure to everyone.

AS a professional in the dental industry for the price of this product I was extremely dissappointed in it's effectiveness.

I had the Sapphire white treatment for 1 hour in 15 minute sessions. The next day I woke up with a lower lip the size of Angelina Jolie. I had ulcers inside my lower lip & jaw. I returned to the dentist who joked about the Jolie pout. He gave me an RX for Kenalog. The second day I woke up to water blisters over my fat lip. The inside burn had "ripened" and was solid ulcer inside my lower lip & lower inside jaw. I have never been in such pain & I paid $275 for 7 lower, front teeth to be whitened. They knew that they had burned me and said it was a minor inconvienence. Maybe they enjoy pain and sucking nutrition through a straw. Be careful who crawls in your mouth!

I am very disappointed, my teeth only whitened one shade and I can get my teeth whitened one shade with Crest white strips. The cost was very high for the results I received from the Sapphire product. The dentist office said I was to get a take home kit next week with my forms but only one syringe full to bleach at home. I am wondering if they are only giving me a partial kit to take home after I paid $250.00. I want to phone the company and complain about the results, I believe I have wasted money and time on this product.

I originally went to get the Zoom! treatment and when I got there, they realized they were all out. They talked me into the Sapphire telling me I would get the same results, with less sensitivity and half the cost, so I did it. I was in the chair for about an hour (3 twenty minute sessions) and didn't have much pain. The only pain I had was the tech got bleach on my upper lip so it hurt and was blistered, and had about two zings through the whole process. I was disappointed with the results even though all the ladies in the office told me how they never see teeth go that white. No one even notices unless I ask them if they can tell. Therefore, I am pretty disappointed. I am using the take home trays now, so hopefully they will work out. But I was very pleased that I had a completely pain free experience other than my lip!

I have chewed tobacco for years. After using the sapphire system my teeth are way whiter than they were before I started chewing. Only problem is: jesus crickets my teeth are killing me. It has been 7 hrs. since the treatment. Guess I have another few days to go before the hurting stops...:)

I just had my teeth whitened about 3 hours ago..It whitened my teeth pretty well. The only disappointment i had was not with the whitening, it was because i have a filling in the front of my tooth, and it didn't whiten as well as i wanted, there's a slight difference in that tooth than the others. but i will try to whiten it with the take home trays. I am having some sensitivity, but not at all unbearable! You should expect to have some sensitivity cause beauty does have a cost! If it didn't hurt, everyone would have beautiful white teeth! Before i had mine whitened i was a shade 2, so they were pretty white to start with! but i had very good results!

I was expecting the sapphire to work very well. It didn't whiten my teeth like I expected and I am very dissapointed because it was expensive and it hurt a lot. The pain went away but I feel like 4 days after the procedure my teeth are back to normal. And I've been brushing after every meal

I just had my teeth whitened using the Saphhire system. It's fine but not as white as I expected. I'm now having a teeth sensitivity. It's not unbearable. I'm going to use the tube that the dentist gave me tonight. He told me that the result will improve in the next couple of days. I'll just wait and see.

I had wisdom teeth (impacted) last week pulled and NO KIDDING~ THIS bleaching has been 10X more painful than the extraction was!! My teeth DID come out 6X whiter (the lightest white on the little sample color chart) so I am totally pleased with the result but OMG could it possibly be any more painful? I have taken motrin, IBuprofin and Dyflusinal ALL day and NOTHING is helping at all. Honest to goodness!! I have had 4 babies at home with no pain killers and never complained much so this is INSANE for me to have this much pain over a non-surgical cosmetic procedure! This is NOT for the faint of heart and dentists SHOULD warn you ahead of time!!

I am a dentist and I have had excellent results with the DenMat Rembrandt in office bleaching system. I have utilized the conventional Virtuoso system and more recently the Sapphire system. I am working on a Tetracycline case that has gone from A4 to C1 in three visits in office. After the third visit, she developed some sensitivity (that dissipated after several days). I suggest check the setting on the light. If the light is too intense for too long a period of time, there may be the possibility of too much heat transmitted to the tooth. Make sure the light isn’t too close to the teeth and use your hand to check on excess heat. This shouldn’t happen with the correct setting. The light it self will probably not change your results. However, the heat emanating from the light will accelerate bleaching.
