Light Activated System

Zoom Whitening System image

The Zoom Teeth Whitening System by Discus Dental Inc (recently acquired by Philips) is one of the most popular teeth whitening systems available on the market today. In fact, it is the most widely used light activated system by dentists worldwide. The product comes in an all-inclusive pack. This means that the dentist is provided with all the necessary materials required for professional tooth bleaching in a single ready to use kit. The product includes the tooth whitener, the bleaching light and a number of disposable and single use items to be used on the patient while performing Zoom! Whitening treatments.

What type of tooth whitener is used with the Zoom Teeth Whitening System?

The Zoom! Teeth Whitening System uses a unique hydrogen peroxide based whitening gel. The produc has two different components, a 32% hydrogen peroxide gel and an activator. The two components have to be mixed together in the right proportion to form a working gel with a 25% concentration of hydrogen peroxide, with a pH level between 7.5 and 8.5.

Does the Zoom Teeth Whitening System require a bleaching light?

As a part of the procedure, the Zoom! Teeth Whitening System requires the use of a mercury metal halide light for bleaching. According to Discus Dental Inc, the wavelength of the light emitted from its units is in the range of 350-400 nm. The light is violet in color. The manufacturer claims that the mercury metal halide light with this wavelength activates the Zoom Whitening System, speeding up the bleaching process and enhances its performance.

The light unit in the Zoom! System comes with a built-in infrared filter. The filter helps in minimizing the amount of heat generated at the surface of the teeth from the light during the bleaching process by filtering the emissions. The Zoom! Teeth Whitening System is capable of whitening both the top and bottom teeth simultaneously with a strategically placed light.

Discus Dental developed a newer bleaching lamp in 2007, called the Zoom Advanced Power Lamp. It’s advertised to dentists as a more powerful tool - whitening teeth by as much as 2 shades more than the previous Zoom lamp product. Clinical studies conducted by The Dental Advisor in November of 07 seem to confirm this lamp’s claims - with results showing whitening improvement in the 1.9 range over the previous protocol.

Does the Zoom bleaching light produce a heating effect on the teeth being whitened?

The existing Zoom protocol and lamp have been used on the market for a long time. While the majority of patients report no heating effect during the bleaching treatment, some patients have experienced lip burns or tooth dehydration as illustrated in the user comments below. The new Advanced Power Light, however, has been shown to cause less sensitivity in sensitivity-prone or almost-sensitivity prone patients.

How much does the Zoom! bleaching light cost?

The exact price of the Zoom bleaching light is difficult to predict, but your dentist might have paid in excess of about $1,500 USD for the original lamp. The newer Advanced Power Lamp can run in the $1900 - $2000 range. These prices will help you estimate what you’ll have to pay for your treatment.

How long does it take your dentist to perform a Zoom Chairside Teeth Whitening System treatment?

The Zoom! Teeth Whitening treatments usually take about 90 minutes for the entire procedure. The treatment process is divided in three individual applications of the Zoom! Teeth Whitening System. Each application is of approximately 20 minutes. The patient’s teeth are exposed to the Zoom! Teeth Whitening System for a total of 60 minutes. The pre and post treatment procedures account for the remaining 30 minutes.

Does the Zoom! Teeth whitening system make use of at-home teeth whitening treatments?

Yes. The patients are provided with an additional whitener (a tray-based teeth whitening product) after the completion of the Zoom! Teeth Whitening treatment. The patients are also given instructions on using the product so that they can continue with the bleaching at home.

What are the individual steps of the Zoom Chairside teeth whitening system?

The Zoom! Teeth Whitening System has several steps. First, the doctor evaluates the patient’s pre-whitening tooth shade. The dentist then isolates the teeth that need to be whitened with the use of a dental dam. The patient is protected with a bib. The dentist then applies the hydrogen peroxide whitening gel on the surface of the teeth. After the application of the whitening gel, the activating light is used on the teeth for activating the whitening gel. The tooth whitener is then left for about 20 minutes. The procedure is repeated two more times, with each application lasting for 20 minutes. After the procedure is over, the teeth are washed thoroughly and the whitener is removed completely from the surface. The dentist then applies 1.1% neutral sodium fluoride gel on the teeth surface to reduce or prevent any sensitivity to hot and cold items. Finally, the patient is provided with an at-home tooth whitening system along with instructions for following up.

Should you choose the Zoom Chairside Teeth Whitening System?

The answer to this question depends entirely on your dentist. The dentist can guide you properly after examining your teeth and then suggest the most appropriate product. If you’re interested in teeth whitening with the new Advanced Power Lamp, you may have to ask which whitening lamp the dentist will be using - some dentists will still be utilizing the original Zoom lamp. In general, the Zoom! Teeth Whitening System is a very good product manufactured by a reputed company. The Zoom! Teeth Whitening System gives teeth whitening results that are comparable to other similar laser whitening products.

Note: Zoom has now released a third generation system called "Zoom 3". Since there seems to be many iterations of this system, and consumers do not know which is which, user reviews below may be for any one of the systems Philips has produced.

I recently had the whitening zoom done to my teeth . I Have NEVER in my life experienced more pain . I thought I was hurting an hour later as I left the dentists office !!! I had no idea what was about to come hours later . As the afternoon went by my mouth began throbbing like I was being electrically shocked in my mouth . It got worse and worse by the hour . Even worse than that the pain spread throughout my entire mouth . Even my Jaw and the side of my face was in mortal pain . Dont even bother with aspirin !!! It hurt so bad I began taking 500MG aspiring ( 5 at a time ) and it didnt touch the pain . If I could have traded the pain for black teeth I would have . As far as the actual whitening it worked and worked well , but there is no way in the world I would do it again . I would rather have no teeth then go threw that again . I have had broken bones , torn tendons , accidents , stitches , you name it I have had it , and NOTHING compares to this pain !!!! NOTHING . If you think you have a high tolerance to pain just give this a shot and you will see that your tolerance for pain isnt what you thought it was . I thought I was a fairly rugged guy , but this procedure left me in my bed with tears pouring down my face . Dont do it , its just not worth it !!!!! Though the teeth get very white , so does your pale face when you are enduring the mortal pain .

I'm sorry I didn't find this message board prior to me having the Zoom treatment done (yesterday). I will start by saying my teeth are whiter - significantly. This was ridiculously uncomfortable and painful, while still in the dentist's chair, not to mention what came afterwards. From start to finish took almost 3 hours. There is prep work and then 3 sessions of 20 minutes w/ the Zoom light (the really painful part) and then the cleaning up. It was so uncomfortable, my bottom lip felt like it was burning, not to mention the sensitivity you'd feel sporatically during the session (kinda like tin foil on filling in your mouth - not fun). They warned me that I could have sensitivity for the next few days, I have. My biggest issue was waking up in the middle of the night with my bottom lip as swollen as it possibly could be. I've iced it and it looks like it will blister. When in to show the dentist, they said they'd never seen anything like that before -- I am glad to see that someone else posted the same odd thing happening to them. Love the teeth -- but I would NEVER do this again -- I would not recommend it to anyone. Do the trays at home. This pain is nothing one should actually pay to have done to them.

I had Zoom done today and it was the most excruciating pain I have ever felt in my life. My dentist said "You may have some sensitivity and feel some "zings" during the procedure." It was more like have your teeth drilled for fillings without freezing. It started about 10 minutes into it and the last 2 minutes were so bad I almost jumped out of the chair and tears were streaming from my eyes. Zings? More like searing white hot pain that increases in intensity right down to the jaw and lasted for more than 30 seconds at a time. I didn't think I could go on, even just having the gel wiped off sent me through the roof, I was shaking so bad. I had to wait almost 10 minutes before I continued on the second run, I almost backed out but I ended up completing all 3 sessions. The 2nd and 3rd time were not as painful as the 1st time but the last 2 minutes of both sessions were intolerable.
After they gave me a high concentration flouride toothpaste which helps, and thru-out the day the pain has gotten better, I got maybe 1 or 2 painful shooting pains and hour, that just came on spontaneously.

I paid 350$ with the teeth trays for later, my results were more than 10 whiter, they look really good, a little chalky blothches that the dentist said would clear up in 48 hrs. I like the results but would NEVER do it again because of the pain. My dentist said she never had a patient that had these pain issues before..I don't know, I never had sensitivity before this....I think the main pain is from the heating up of the core of the tooth....I kept asking her why I kept smelling burning hair!!! (She said it was the bleach)

Well, you decide...

I am a dental assistant and I have had the ZOOM procedure done. It was worth it. I did experience very little sensitivity but it was nothing to cry about. If I had the chance to do it again I certainly would.

Read all the horror stories before getting Zoom done. Was a little worried, to say the least. Just finished having teeth cleaned followed by Zoom. Three fifteen min. sessions. Absolutely no Pain or Sensitivity. Had tray whitening in the past, and on occasion fell asleep w/trays still in my mouth.(Much more painful) Two hours post-Zoom and only a slight twinge. Would have to say that most of the horror stories posted, are more of operator error ie. dental hygenist not taking the time to properly protect your gums and lips. Would recomend this to any one wanting a pearly-white smile wo/ all the effort. Price was right, also. $300

I just had the treatment today and it worked great, and it should for 400 dollars. Ten minutes after the treatment i was in sever pain. I am still in pain and its 5 hours later. I jsut wish the 400 dollars came with an optional time machine so i could go back and never get this treatment, too much pain.

I had the ZOOM done this morning at 7:00 am. It is now 5:23 pm, and I can say that the uncomfortable "zingers" have subsided. I endured all three 15-minute sessions. During the actual bleaching sessions, I just felt some sensitivity from the peroxide on the gumline, but nothing major. The dental assistant told me I would probably feel some sensitivity & zingers during the 2nd session. Actually, I didn't feel the zingers until about 10 minutes into the 3rd session. Afterward (as I drove from the dentist to work), I noticed the zingers a bit more often. The worst of it was over by about 1:00 pm, and honestly, the pain was not bad at all; basically, a sharp, shooting electrical-type pain that comes & goes very quickly every few minutes. I knew what to expect going into this; I do have sensitive teeth, so I expected much worse. I would definitely do it again. Oh, and I was given 400 mg of ibuprofen at the dentist's office prior to the procedure, and have since taken 440 mg of naproxen (Aleve) since...nothing stronger.

I had the ZOOM! treatment done yesterday morning. I had no idea that the treatment was going to be so uncomfortable & painful! I opted to do the 4 fifteen minute sessions to achieve the best results. During the 1st session it felt like my gums were on fire. During the 2nd session it wasn't so bad. Then on the 3rd & 4th sessions it was hell! I kept getting what is referred to as "zingers" shooting in different teeth. The dental rep never warned me about these things! So, after it was done and they removed the mouth brace, gauze, gum gel protector and bib they let me spit in a tube to get all the junk out. I looked at my teeth and they were noticably whiter. However the tops edges that were covered by the gum protector were still the old color. Kinda weird. So I got sent home with take home whitening trays for maintenance. When I got home I notice that my gums above my 2 front teeth are burned and very swollen! Very painful and hard to brush my teeth with this. About 30 mins later I began to get the most horrible aches in my teeth and those horribel zingers. The zingers come out of nowehere and feellike someone id jabbing a needle on your toother nerve. They were SO sensitive, even to the air when I would talk. The pain was so bad, tylenol or ibuprophin did not do anything. Luckily I had some vicodin from when I had some teeth pulled about a year ago. I had to take 2 of those to ease the pain. Needless to say I conked out early last night from the meds and when I woke up the pain wasn't so bad anymore. But my gums are red & purple and still a bit swollen. By bottom teeth are still a bit sensitive too. All in all, my teeth are much whiter but I would never do the ZOOM! again. I would opt for just a take home whitener and do it a little at a time.

Ok, let me start off by saying I just completed this process 6 hours ago. My teeth look great.

I really must question the reality of this review webpage though. After reading reviews, I was scared SH$TLESS because of what I read! "Oh, Don't do it... The pain is too much... Dentist should have paid me.... Worst Pain of my life.... and Blah blah blah"

What a crock! Was this page written by a competitor or something? Crest whitening strips maybe?! HA! (Which by the way I think the professional whitening strips are great)

Anyway, back to ZOOM.

I only paid $215 at a silent charity auction. What a great value! I was sat in a comfy chair with music I picked in the background... and was literally as nervous as I have ever been. The anticipation that I had for the whitening, due to this dumb webpage, was overwhelming. The service was paid for and therefor a service I could get for free... so i figured why not! I even took the whole day off anticipating "ALL THE PAIN AND ZINGERS"! HA! Either I went to the best dentist and Zoom Guy in the world (Dr. Archaki in Boynton Beach, FL- who I DO highly recommend) or there are a bunch of lying marketers on this page!

I'm very happy with my results! There was no pain except for on my jaws only due to the fact that I had to bite down on soft spongy pads to keep in place!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND GETTING THIS. TEETH ARE ABOUT 8 OR 9 SHADES WHITER THAN BEFORE, AND I ALREADY HAD VERY WHITE TEETH. I KNOW IT WORKS BETTER IF YOU HAVE CRAPPY UGLY TEETH TOO! EMAIL ME AT [email protected] IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS! THIS IS A LEGITIMATE REVIEW!

GO GET IT DONE!

I had my Zoom whitening process yesterday and am THRILLED with my results. My mother on the other hand had gone to another dentist and was not so thrilled. After reading about other peoples experiances here I can definatly see the difference a good and experianced dentist can make. The process my dental office took before my whitening was very extensive. They put a protective coating all over my lips and gums. And were very careful to pack my mouth and gums and any very sensative teeth with gause so as not to irritate them. They also did the whitenting in 15 mintue incraments.. Came and repacked my mouth and cleaned up the coating and reapplyed it each and every time. I am thrilled with my results as I got 8 shades whiter!! I do have very VERY sesative teeth right now and they do hurt. I started getting the zingers on the 3rd process..so they stopped and said I was done as they didnt want me to be in too much pain. They contuinued on and off all evening and a couple this morning , But it is day two and they are much much better today and im sure by tomorrow they will be perfect. My mothers experiance was very different, they just let her sit for over an hour and when things were burning just said oh well thats what happens. No protective stuff or anything and didnt give her breaks in between like I did. He results werent as dramatic as mine either. So just my tip to all of you thinking about it. Make sure your have an experianced dentist who knows and CARES what he or she is doing! If you do then your Zoom can be a fantastic thing!! I am a HUGE Tea drinker and smoker so I will be using the custom trays made for me often but If I can keep the results I have I can tell ya I cant complain one bit! I paid a full 500 for mine and although the pain is not fun..I think if you know what you COULD be in for and are prepared then it is way worth it! If your in Modesto Go to Dale dental and see Dr. Tran. They will take good care of ya!

Zoom is great. I highly recommend it. As with any medical or dental treatment, you need to first start with the right doctor/dentist. I had the process done about a year ago. I had no pain during or after the process. Although my teeth were already rather white, I wanted to get the treatment. The results were great...and my teeth were even whiter. As a matter of fact, just the other day, someone asked me how I keep my teeth so white - and it almost a year later.

If you are in the DC area, check out Dr. James Johnson at 555 12th Street NW. I promise, he and his crew are really great at this. Please note, this is really a sincere testimonial from someone who is very pleased with the results of this treatment. I highly recommend it. However, again...be sure you go to the right dental office. Those who have complaints most likely had a bad dentist.

Good luck...

If I had known about this site before I had this done, I would have NEVER done it! My teeth are almost glow-in-the-dark they are so white, which is great, but not worth the cost of the pain. I had no pain during the 3 sessions of 15 minutes a piece. Afterwards though, I was sure something was seriously wrong! I've never had a zinger in my life and never want to again. It's HORRIBLE! It feels like 1,000 volts running through the nerves of your teeth! I can't even speak and am terrified to eat or drink anything. The gel they gave me has brought the pain from a 10 to a 7, but still... I was not warned that excruciating pain was a side effect. If you have sensitive teeth I DO NOT recommend this procedure.

Had the Zoom whitening yesterday afternoon. During the last few minutes of the procedure, my lower teeth started to hurt a bit, but there was only about 4-5 minutes left, so I was able to just rinse it off. The dentist gave me a prescription for Motrin 800, which I didn't really need. Felt the "zingers" for about an hour afteward, every 5-10 minutes, just in the lower part of my teeth which are obviously a lot more sensitive then the top. Later that night, my teeth were just sensitve to the cold air. As of this morning my teeth have very little sensitivity, and my teeth look great! The procedure itself was kind of uncomfortable, but I would definetely recommend this. My dentist told me I probably wouldn't see much of a result just because my teeth weren't very yellow, but since the procedure was free, I decided to do it anyways. Very impressed.

I had this done 10 years ago! Best money I have ever spent. My teeth were pretty yellow, with brownish stains between the top front 2 teeth. Afterwards, my teeth were bright white and people have always asked how I got such beautiful white teeth! :) So glad I did it... would recommend to anyone!

Amazing results. A little uncomfortable during the light sessions, but totally worth it in the end. After reading the above comments, I think you should research the dentist that is doing your treatment....mine was great. She gave me a prescription for vicodin because I was afraid I would have pain I never had to take it or even an aspirin ...2 days later, not one bit of pain after leaving the dentist's chair. I would highly recommend Zoom...just find a good place to have it done.

I just had the procedure done about 36 hours ago and I am very pleased with it. Of course, I had some sensitivities and several shooting zingers, but this is expected of any whitening procedure. As for the result, my teeth was about 6 shades lighters and looks great. One discomfort that cannot really be controlled are the zingers, but the gums and lips should not be painful if adequate steps were taken to cover them. The cost was a lot more than store bought whitening strips worked much faster, within an hour my teeth was awsome. I would recommend this procedure for anyone who is willing to go through some pain once to get great results. If not, the customs trays or whitening strips works too, but will just take much much longer.

I read everybody's comment yesterday and was scared to go into my procedure today. I told my Dentist all of my concerns and he assured me he would take care of it. First off he covered my lips with a gel and the put gauze to bring down the lips as they were covered. Next he injected some wax like substance all around my gums, so they would be blocked from the light. He told me when he was done with the "pre-op" there "would be no pink showing".

I went through the 3 15minute procedure with only one "zinger", the only other discomfort I felt was the heat on the teeth. After the second session he applied a desenitizer to my teeth and it is now 5 hours after my procedure with NO problems. i guess if you have a good Dentist you trust and who does the right thing everything will work out fine.

I am actually drinking an ice cold drink as I write this with no problem. Just tell your dentist to make sure there is no "pink" showing and you will be fine.

Very, very happy with the results and I got a discount for $350 bucks. Hope your experience was as good as mine

I am a female, 19, and had the Zoom teeth whitening procedure done at 1:30 yesterday afternoon (July 25, 2008).

I had relatively white teeth to begin with, not being a coffee-cola drinker or smoker, and this is primarily a procedure that my father is seeking. However, because of the horrible FEAR MONGERING on this reviewsite, he is TERRIFIED to have the procedure done. That being said, he paid a discounted $300 for me to be the guinea pig.

I entered the office and the dental assistant began preparation. Because I go to the amazing DentSpa, I received a hand and foot massage and got to watch a DVD of my choosing (Intolerable Cruelty - I was going for irony) on a pair of cool virtual reality glasses during the 3 15-minute sessions.

I had gauze, cotton and sealant applied and packed into my mouth before we began. The procedure was no more or less comfortable than your average trip to the dentist (trust me - I had two sealants earlier that morning and a cleaning the previous day). Into the second session I felt my lower lip becoming warm. The assistant seemed to intuit this upon return, and promised to move the light further from me during the third round.

The whole procedure was performed by the assistant and she did a spotless job. She had been the guinea pig for another dental office, and was able to explain the "zings" and sensitivity to me beforehand. She told me that some would experience them throughout, some towards the beginning or end and some not at all. Very thorough - the waiver I signed even listed all these side effects, plus other that seemed much more severe (gum recession, etc).

After reading this website, I was expecting a fireworks show in my mouth! Imagine my disappointment when all I received was one little twinge towards the end of the final session. I got a fluoride treatment for 5-10 minutes and she showed me the results: thrilling! I am absolutely satisfied. They are now the second lightest shade of white on the "whiteness" scale. A single decalcification appeared on the front of my bottom left tooth, but this has gone away, as promised, as the teeth rehydrate.

As I drove home, I did begin to experience more zings - some momentarily caused me to stop for breath or pause in the middle of a sentence, but nothing close to the ghastly descriptions of "white-hot pokers," "wires," "electricity" and "worst pain of my life." Haven't some of you ladies gone through CHILD BIRTH? Please. I can't take painkillers, and I don't think I would have, was I able.

In fact, I went right home and made myself a bowl of spaghetti (no sauce, of course) and just two hours after the procedure I was playing in a tennis tournament. I can't believe people are taking work off or losing sleep over this. It is now the next morning and I am 100% back to normal. The teeth have rehydrated and the calcified spot has disappeared, but my teeth remain the same beautiful shade of white. I am going to continue the "white diet" for another 24+ hours and continue with salt-baking soda rinses to keep them from staining during this porous period.

Not only would I absolutely go through this again, my sister is going to the same location in one week's time for the same procedure! I couldn't live with myself if I let her go through the kind of torture described on this site. Please, make an informed decision and thank goodness people are going through with it in SPITE of these horrible reviews and coming away with fantastic results!

I have my wedding coming up in 1-1/2 weeks so i decided to get this done. I have sesitive gums but everything worked out great!! I was totally pleased with the service. They did the 3-15min sessions and it all went well. I do have a little sensitivity on two of my lower front teeth but other than that everything is good. I drink iced tea everyday all day and this brought my teeth 9 shades lighter!!!!!!!! I couldn't be more pleased at all (other than it was $500) but hey its all worth it when it comes to picture time at the wedding. I definitely will tell everyone that Zoom is great and i would reccomend this to everyone.

First off, I have to say that the results were terrific. my teeth are amazingly white now!

But here comes the downside:
I got the zingers just like everybody else on this page. It wasn't bad because it was only on my bottom front teeth but I NEVER want to experience it again. I've been hurt doing many different types of things but this is the worst pain I've ever felt.

I was in the dentist chair for twohours. She gave me four treatments instead of three because my teeth were very yellow (second from the darkest on the sample teeth) and were responding very well to the treatment. That two hours were the worst part--even with my usually sensitive teeth there was zero discomfort afterwords. Th didn't experience horror stories here had me worried, but I just didn't have any bad experience. Its been 4 days and my teeth are even whiter than they were the day I left the office (6 -7 shades whiter!). No coffee, tea, red wine, or dark foods for a couple days--but hey--my teeth look great!

I wish they could've stayed white longer, but it did whiten my teeth very much and I was finally able to really smile! I loved it, and was able to extend the effect with the bag of Nite White and touch ups they gave me.
Time for me to do it again, when I can afford it (cost me under $300, but that's still a lot for me), but for now, I think I'll continue with the Nite White, which also works, and take someone's suggestion of making a paste using baking soda and a little peroxide. They said it's used on movie sets. Sounds worth trying---and very cheap----yea!!!!

I had the Zoom Advanced Power 3 done today at Sparkles, in Birmingham Michigan. It is ran by Dr. Taylor, and it was great! I watched television with nice headphones the whole time. I felt nothing but a little warmth. My teeth are amazingly white. They gave me a Motrin 800mg to take and did a 5 minute flouride treatment to help prevent the zingers. It has been 7 hours and I have had a baby zinger....I guess, it was nothing. I am so happy. I truly believe in the Zoom, but you have to go to a reputable place where they cover your lips, gums, etc. His cost was $300. Very reasonable for this area.

I am so glad I went through with this! After reading these horrific posts this morning, I was going to cancel. Until my husband said, "if it were that bad, they'd be out of business." Although I wouldn't describe the experience as "fun", it certainly was pleasant. The ONLY pain was a mild gum sensitivity, which I expected, as I have a tiny bit of receding. There was no tooth pain at all....NONE. I thought my teeth were pretty white to begin with, but WOW. The result was better than anticipated. I did purchase the sensitivity toothpaste to take home and additional night whitening trays to touch up, as I'm a coffee drinker. I would highly recommend this service!

Had my Zoom! whitening done today. I am a HUGE fan, my teeth are about 12 shades lighter. Even my dentist was amazed! I have pretty sensitve teeth and receeding gums (for which composites needed to be filled in), but truly felt very little pain. (I do know that I have a high pain threshold, but with this had very little pain whatsoever). I wish I had taken a Xanax and brought my IPOD b/c it would have relaxed me and given me something to think about other than those cotten gauze in my mouth and the drill going in the next room. But all in all, I am thrilled. I know that everyone is different when it comes to denta/gum pain, for me though it was worth every cent! I feel about 10 years younger and my kids were astounded. Cost was about $550.

I had this procedure done 2-11-2009. It was $250.00, they were running a valentines day special. It did take my teeth down about 3-4 shades. The "zingers" yesterday was awful but they gave me some gel to use in trays that took them away. Today I have not had one "zinger" and tomorrow they want me to use the "whitening gel" for 2 hours tomorrow and the next day and then I was told to use it every 6 months. So far I am happy. I will write another review six months from now to report if my teeth are still as bright and white.

I never bleached my teeth in my life prior to having the Zoom procedure done.
I was fortunate and had it done for $80 because a friend at college has a father that owns a dentist office.

I seriously almost cried when I saw the results. I am talking NIGHT and DAY.
It was amazing!!

BUT, you must not smoke, drink tea or anything dark, eat dark foods for a little while, because your teeth will absorb the color.

I did get the ZINGING feeling during and after the procedure.

BUT,in my opinion, well worth it for the drastic results!

I had the Zoom done yesterday and I am very pleased with the results. I was a little skeptical after reading the reviews here but I didn't want to backout. I was an A2 and went to a 040 after the procedure. My teeth are still a little sensitive and I did experience some zingers like everyone else did but hey it was totally worth it!! You have to expect some sort of discomfort and/or sensitivity. My dentist was great and sent me home with some flouride trays that I wore the rest of the day along with some tylenol and advil. If I should ever need to do it again I totally would!

I just had a Zoom treatment about 12 hours ago. My results are AMAZING! I've never had my teeth whitened before and tried not to have high expectations (so I wouldn't be let down), However, I was shocked when I first saw my teeth! And, they said they would continue to whiten over the next day or so!
Now for the downside.... I started with "zingers" about 30 min after finishing. Wow...they really stop you in your tracks! I ended up taking a Tylenol & a nap to avoid the pain and it helped. I havent had anymore since then, now, about (10:30pm) I just have sensitivity. I dont think I will try brushing them tonight because I'm afraid of inducing another zinger.

I must have had a great lady doing mine, because I don't think I have a single burn or even a sore spot from the treatment! I had 4 sessions at 15 min. each. (I even dozed off during the 3rd and 4th session)

In my opinion, for me it is definately worth it. My teeth looked better than I could have imagined. Yes, I have had some pain and a little discomfort, but as long as it goes away in 1-2 days, like they said it would, I am very pleased. I do think it should be less expensive though. The price tag itself is a rather painful zinger!

Enter your comment here. I would like to start off saying that I had this done yesterday. I went in there nervous because of all the stuff on here. I only paid 299 for this. I had some really bad "zingers" I was in tears. I had just started my 3rd 20 min. sesson and had to quit as I was in tears. It felt like totall hell inside the nerves of my teeth. My teeth are not even as in the shades of white. The dentise said I went from a A13 to a B1 in color shades. I suppose thats good, but what about the blotches if have all over my teeth. They didnt tell me that the cavity I had filled in my front tooth would make my front tooth half white and half yelllow. I hate it.. They say they can fix it with another appt. Yippie... More dental work. I thought I was done .. whatever. If u can get this done by a good perwon then go for it!!!!!!

I had the zoom treatment done 3 days ago and the results were amazing!! the dental hygenist that prepped me for the treatment was very thorough and I didnt experience any burning or blistering. I did have alittle sensitivity but that went away after a few hours. Overall a good experience.

I had Zoom done yesterday. I felt fine and did 4 sessions. After about 4 hours, horrible pain! Could not sleep, eat, watch tv. I went to the grocery store...Ora-gel has a tooth sensitivity kit...made it 90% better. I was able to sleep through the night. Today it does not hurt, but I am experiencing a weird fingernails on the chalkboard feeling every time I touch fabric. My mother in law who is a nurse, said it may be due to the nerves....hope it gets better soon!

After reading these reviews, I was pretty nervous about getting this procedure done. I did 4 sessions and the zingers started during ses. 3. Session 3 wasn't too bad, but session 4 was pretty intense. Upon leaving the dentis office, the workers claimed that the pain wouldn't be very bad...Yeah Right! It was some major pain. At some points, I was almost miserable, but the results were fantastic and well worth the cost and pain.

My teeth have always had a yellowish tint since I was a child. I just recently got out of my braces and decided to get the whitening. It was VERY affordable for me... Free... And if I keep my 6 mon cleaning with the dentist I will get a free one every other year.... The whitening worked great... I went up 6 shades... I didnt get my 1st zinger until the last 10 mins of the last application... I got this done at 3:30 and they just stopped at 9:00... I've even had a 2 bowls of cereal, brushed my teeth, and put my retainer in with no further problems... But I don't like the zingers and I'll never do this again... I have a high tolerance for pain (5 tats) and this was extremely painful for me...

I am an Australian and recently holidayed in Thailand. The first day I arrived I had my teeth whitened with the Zoom whitening system. It cost $300AU and took nearly 1 and a half hours. I had four twenty minute sessions and of course there was some minor discomfort especially with having to sit so still with only the ceiling to look at. I ended up counting the seconds to pass the time. Finally it was finished, my gums were slightly tender and this did last a couple of days, but didn't bother me even while eating. My teeth are heaps whiter and even strangers have commented. I'll get them done every time I go back. I'm very pleased!!

After reading all of these horrific posts, I almost canceled my appointment. I AM GLAD I DIDN'T!

I had met with my dentist who told me I was a great candidate for ZOOM. He explained the procedure in detail, including the side effects, and he gave me Fluoride toothpaste to use for a week before the appointment.

The night before my appointment I visited this website....THAT was my biggest mistake, I was petrified. The morning of the session I popped a couple of Alleve and went in...feeling like I was going to the gas chamber.

The prep took about 30 mins, the technician telling what was happening each step of the way. Then the ZOOM began...........tick, tock, tick, tock.... I waited, ANXIOUS and JITTERY thinking back on all of these posts. I was sweting and gripping the arms of the cahir.........Session 1, Session 2, Session 3, and finally Session 4. NOTHING. After 4-15 minute sessions I was done.

The worst part of the entire procedure was biting down on the mouth guard for an hour. ANd you know what? The results are pretty amazing. Not a fake Hollywood white, but white, bright and natural looking.

I got my take home trays with "soothing" gel and went home. I took another Aleve and waited, as NOW was when I would experience the stabbing, mind numbing ZINGERS. 1 hr, 2 hrs, 5, hrs, 8 hrs. NOTHING. A slight sensitivty and I do mean slight. I am now a day and a half out of my ZOOM session and I have had NO issues, and I have started on my once daily home bleaching (which needs to be done for a week.)

I MUST SAY that it appears that I am not the norm here, I mean someone said child birth was easier, but I HAD to come out here and post my experience for those of you on the fence to say that YES it is possible to have ZOOM Bleaching without nightmarish pain and lousy results.

I read the reviews on here the night before my treatment and very nearly cancelled as a result! However I am very glad I went through with the treatment.

Before starting I asked my dentist if I would be likely to experience pain, as my teeth and gums are very sensitive. His reply was very evasive which did not fill me with confidence! It's true the hour long treatment is uncomfortable and at several points I wanted to ask them to stop but decided to stick it out. However I didn't experience any of the pain some people have endured.

Afterwards I had some sensitivity, nothing major. I had two "zingers" about an hour afterwards which were painful but thankfully brief. And now 48 hours later I guess that was about it!

I'm very happy with the results, my teeth are looking a lot cleaner and whiter and still look natural. However it has only been 48 hours so not sure how long this would last.

I just wanted to highlight that it is possible to have a positive experience with Zoom. My advice would be don't necessarily choose the cheapest place... I paid a bit more to go to a well respected surgery and probably the extra time and care they took in preparation and aftercare made my experience positive.

I'm not sure if I would recommend though, it seems everybody needs to balance the risks and are not always as lucky as I was.

My teeth are beautiful.... LOVE it!..... I have read numerous of blogs and it seems like you guys did not consult with the right dentist. I had no sensitvity, no lip burns and no discomfort whatso ever. My dentist had me brush with flouride 7 days before my procedure he took time to put that stuff on my gums and he told me to stay still during the procedure because movement can cause the things to shift. I love it moved 6 shades up and I can't be more happy!

AMAZING!!! Im so happy I paid for this procedure, it was the best thing on earth that I could do for myself. My Dentist was great, she informed me off the process and even warned me of these stingers, I only felt it once a few hours after I left. She went over the details with me and explained that I should not try talking or moving while the process was going, or the gel could move and burn my gums....Also, she let me know that results can vary... it has a lot to do with you and your teeth as well... So i recomment people BRUSH your teeth!!!!! Well after following her instructions, Im so happy with my results!!! OMG! She still provided me with a gel just in case I had any sensitivity.

Just got done with my Zoom in-office whitening. I thought it was going to hurt like the reviews I read about, but it really didn't hurt at all. I am not sure about the next 48 hours with the sensitivity, but for now it doesn't hurt and no zingers! My teeth look great and I just wanted to post a good review for those out there doing research and get scared like I did from all the bad reviews. I really didn't hurt, but my dentist gave me flouride to rinse with at home and I used Sensodyne faithfully for at least 3 weeks before the procedure.

I had zoom3 done yesterday here in DC. It only cost me $149 as the dentist accepted a $100 gift card they had mailed out randomly in the area (I just moved to that part of DC). I hadnt really read anything about it (at least not negative) before going so went into it blind... I'm thinking now thats probably not a bad thing as some of these sites would scare the you know whats out of you going! Anyway they gave me this 5 page document to read and initial every page which was the "caution" about going into it - reading that nearly had me leave too as it did talk all about the zingers and pain and possible side effects and if you hadnt had your teeth checked by a dentist before hand they couldnt be responsible for any issues as a result of dental problems! anyway i went through with it - she said i'd only need 3 sessions of 15 mins. they spent 20 mins getting me ready! I was more afraid of suffocating or gagging on all the gauze they put in my mouth, including one that was to rest on my tongue to stop it touching my teeth!! i got through the 3 sessions fine although by the 3rd one it felt like 40 minutes not 15. my lip did feel "hot" after that one but otherwise fine. When she showed me how white my teeth were she was more excited than me as said it was an A+ in that it was brighter than the expected top level white! i was delighted but some of those zingers an hour later were crippling - i kept saying "tough it up, you want white teeth you pay!!" i took the aleve pills she gave me (they only gave me 2) and then 2 hours later i took 2 tynelol. i went to bed and did sleep. woke up at 5am with sensitive teeth but had no zingers (amen!!). I do have a swollen lower lip that looks like i got a wallop from something and thats probably more sore than my teeth, although they're sensitive! I drank a bottle of milk instead of my usual tea (and it was cold) and ate some hash browns with scrambled eggs and had no problems with pain or issues with hot/cold touching my teeth (amen again!!) I figure another day and a good nights sleep and I'll be grand but do think I was lucky as the vast majority seem to be suffering worse! According to the paperwork the dentist gave me, you shouldnt need to do this again for at least a year, if you continue to brush your teeth using whitening toothpaste so i figure the small pain is worth the large gain - my teeth are 10 times white than they were, i only hope it doesnt fade so much i wonder was it worth it but at least i only paid $149 if thats the case - if i'd paid more i'd likely be unhappy if the bright white faded! right now i feel like they're so white i need sunglasses on to look at them (please let it last!!) but we shall see - time will tell. hopefully the burnt lower lip doesnt blister and peel or it'll ruin the effect!! what I am curious about though is that my dentist never even mentioned take home trays so wonder did people pay more for those (I suspect so) but she did tell me that the toothpaste I'm using (whitener) will help keep them this white for a long time if i brush twice daily morning and night!.

I got Zoom done today about 6 hours ago and the pain is so incredibly bad. I just got done using the relief gel and taking Asprin and yet the pain is still excruciating. There was mild pain throughout the entire procedure but by session 4 I was done and had to stop them. I love the way my teeth look, but if I could I would take it back. DO NOT GET THIS DONE! OUCH!

If you have healthy teeth, few to no cavities/fillings, and aren't a wimp...Zoom! is the right choice. I got the Zoom! whitening on the same day I was told about it. That means no desensitizing toothpaste, I had two miniscule cavities (discovered 6 months prior (did not need filling yet)) during the procedure. The process was very bearable with some sort of distraction (a tv in the office). I felt the "zingers" after but they could be combated simply by drinking some cold water and letting it sit in my mouth for a few seconds. I was very happy with the process and did not require the desensitizing gel after the first application directly after the process. I would recommend it to anyone who wants white teeth and can deal with a little pain for a few hours.

If you can't deal with the pain from Zoom! then you have bigger issues to worry about than having whiter teeth.

Had this treatment yesterday, Did have some pain during procedure but not untill the end of the treatment and I did have some pain afterwards. What you need to remember is that this is cosmetic dentistry and you have a choice as with any cosmetic procedures it is painfull but worth it. I did not have any problems with burning as I used a professional dentist and I paid alot more than some people who have left comments, basically you get what you pay for. My teeth look great and so much whiter than before I am really pleased with the results.

I just had the Zoom! whitening done yesterday. My teeth are 12 shades whiter, but the dentist said there will be some regression, so I expect to go back a few shades. So, it works, but...

IT HURTS!!! I am usually very good with pain. I've been through a 36-hour labor and two c-sections, and I would say that the Zoom! procedure ranked as the second-most pain I have ever been in.

For the first two sessions, I was fine. My lips were burning a little, but the hygienist put more protection on and that took care of it. Toward the end of the third session, I started to feel the "zingers." They used the relief gel on me for about 15 minutes between the third and 4th session. During that time, I was getting INTENSE "zingers," and finally the relief gel calmed them down. I gutted throught the fourth session, and maybe because of the relief gel it wasn't quite as bad, BUT immediately after I was done, I had to use more relief gel, and the dentist gave me some Advil.

Throughout the rest of the day and evening, I was in a great deal of pain. I was even in tears. Taking Advil every 4 hours took the edge off but it was still pretty bad.

Then, suddenly at about 10-12 hours after the procedure, the pain started to subside. That was just before I went to bed. This morning I awoke feeling fine.

In short, even though my teeth are a lot whiter, it was NOT worth the pain. If you are sensitive to Crest White Strips, you will most likely HURT during Zoom!

I will NEVER do this again, and I would NOT recommend it to anyone. Other whitening procedures may not be as effective, but they most likely are not as painful either!

I had Zoom! done at 8:30 this morning & it's now 7:30. Not bad. A few zingers here & there but I came up 8 shades! I haven't used the relief gel I may try it if the pain does get worse. A little sensitive around the outline of my teeth but only if air hits them just right. Like I said not bad but I had googled this procedure & watched it on YouTube so I knew what to expect.
