Opalescence Take Home Whitening Gels Review

Opalescence offers one of the most popular and arguably the best take-home professional whitening product on the market. It is made by Ultradent and available in 10%, 10%PF, 15%PF, 20%PF and 35%PF carbamide peroxide concentrations to suit your bleaching and oral health needs. This procedure also provides you with custom-made mouth trays that your dentist will fit for you to ensure maximum gel-to-tooth contact when you wear them at home.

What does the PF stand for?

The PF stands for potassium nitrate and fluoride. A 2005 study in the Journal of Operative Dentistry found that the combination of potassium nitrate and fluoride in Opalescence PF reduces vulnerability to cavities and increases the re-mineralization of the enamel for greater tooth strength.

How does Opalescence take-home gels work?

First, your dentist will select the proper concentration of Carbamide Peroxide for your whitening needs. You can whiten with any of the formulas between 10% to 35% and get the same results – it just takes a longer period of time to achieve results with a lower concentration formula. Your dentist will also take impressions of your teeth, so that a laboratory can create custom bleaching trays just for you. You'll take the gels and trays home and wear them according to your dentist's instruction (minutes per day/days per week). You'll place the Opalescence gel into your bleaching trays and wear them as directed.

Using your custom-made tray with Opalescence

When using Opalesence it is important to have your dentist make very precise fitting trays with "block out" (reservoirs), since the bleaching gel will cause irritation if it comes into contact with your gums. Keep in mind that Opalescence is not water soluble; if the gel comes into contact with your gums from an overloaded tray, it will not just wear off or rinse off. You need to use a dry tissue or wash cloth to remove the excess from the gums. This is why reservoirs are so important – it helps to hold the material in the tray and not on the tissues. If you are bleaching for only a short time (i.e. 1 hour), reservoirs are not necessary for your fitting tray.

Do Opalescence whitening gels cause tooth sensitivity?

The higher concentration formulas can most definitely cause tooth sensitivity. If you experience sensitivity, you should tell your dentist and try a less concentrated formula (i.e. 10%). The other option is to use a desensitizer.php">desensitizing gel immediately after whitening your teeth (i.e. Relief ACP Oral Care Gel, UltraEZ Desensitizing Gel). A study done by Dr. Wm Browning of Medical College of GA tested the sensitivity factor of Opalescence PF 10%, NiteWhite Excel 2Z 10% and Rembrandt XtraComfort 10%. The study found that all exhibited some degree of sensitivity but Opalescence users had less sensitivity and for a significantly shorter period of time. Read our article about teeth whitening sensitivity for more information.

Do the different concentrations make a difference?

You can bleach from 10% to 35% and get the same results – it just takes a longer period of time to achieve results with a lower concentration formula.

How long does the bleaching gel last for?

Opalescence has a timed sustained release for 8-10 hours. It is recommended to do overnight bleaching, when possible, because of the products sustained release formula. It is not recommended to do overnight bleaching with the 20% and 35% formulas, as it could cause SEVERE sensitivity. Consult your dentist about this.

Whitening Factor

Results are often seen after just one night. Because this product uses custom fabricated trays, it is considered the “gold standard” in teeth whitening. If you have been disappointed by over-the-counter products, we highly recommend this product.

I only have the 10% and I slept in it as directed. My teeth hurt so bad I woke up from the pain and couldn't go back to sleep. I don't even consider my teeth sensitive!? I was NEVER going to do it again...but I did again last night (about a week after the first time). Same exact thing, my teeth hurt so bad my mouth is watering like I may get sick from the pain. I didn't see a lot of reviews that said they had this problem. My teeth are throbbing so bad. I'm curious if there is any products that I could try for my wedding they will not cause pain?

I have been using this product for nearly one month and there has been no appreciable difference in the appearance of my teeth from when I started using this product to this point. I can't begin to convey how disappointed I am with Opalescence. I need to replace two crowns on tooth numbers 8 and 9 and require two new crowns on 7 and 10 but both my dentist and I wanted my teeth to be their whitest prior to seating the crowns. What a waste of money....... My teeth are as dingy and yellow as when I started the bleaching regimen. I see my dentist on Tuesday, April 19, and she will get an earful. If I wanted to throw my money down the drain, I would have gone to a casino-gambling offers at least a chance of winning. This product stinks!

Well, it's the end of round 2. My dentist agreed that the 30-minute-use-time method did not work for me and asked that I try the overnight method. Well, one month later, I still have the same dingy yellow teeth that I had when I started. This product has been a dismal failure and I am incredibly disappointed. Opalescence guarantees that its products will work and offers a 100% refund if the user is not satisfied; I'm not and I am going to ask for a refund. What a waste of time and money.

I had a terrible experience with this product. I attempted to use it three times, each time wondering what I must be doing incorrectly. This product absolutely burned my gums up, and this was despite following protocol precisely. Mine was the 20% solution. Iíve used Crest strips without trouble, also Zoom whitening with no pain or irritation. Worse yet, the effect it had on my teeth was not good, it made them look like its name, very opalescent, with a blue hue. That couple with the angry red gums, well, it was the opposite of improvement.

My dentist gave me the 10% syringe and I have been using for 1 week and I don't see any results...as a matter of fact my teeth look much yellow to me. I used this product overnight. I put the custom made trays in about 9 pm every night and take out every morning at about 7 am. NO results! Very disappointed. I did not experience any sensitivity.

This is the first night I used the 15%,
after 2Hrs my white enamel were bleached with very very obvious white! (like liquidpaper white) while upper gum
Sort of remain the same. I am worried that the final result will have 2tones
1. Super white patches of enamel
2. The upper gum teeth area not so much of result
Ended up the 2 colour contrast a big difference. Does anybody here encounter the same problem? Will the colour eventually blend nicely after continuous usage of this product?? Help!

Yes, this product works, but it trashed my gums when I used it. When I brushed my teeth this morning my gums started bleeding. It really burned up my mouth and gums- and I followed the instructions exactly.

I won't be trying Opalescence again- it's too painful.

15% gave me extreme sensitivity and the pain was NOT bearable. I found myself letting out yelps in public every time I got a shock of sensitivity pain.
I do not think the whitening is worth the pain in all honesty I think I wasted a lot of money.

35% is just way too extreme for my gums and teeth. After following exact instructions- wiping off access with dry cloth, and using minimal amt in trays, etc , I left it on for 2o min and I immediately regretted trying this product again. The sensitivity in my teeth and the gum pain was just ridiculous for such a small amount of time! I even took a Tylenol immediately after . Seriously- I know that sounds like a big Whiney baby! But ya'll this stuff feels like fire on your gums! And Not a good look when they are red and nearly bleeding! Nutthin to smile about here!!!!
6 months prior I had tried this same strength and left it on for 30 minutes -BAD IdEa .....My gums were white and super painful for a long time after that ( like into the next 2 days) and a few ulcers developed. I blamed myself for leaving it on for too long, but was told to try again for the 20 min and it would be "all good." NOT!. I have always whitened my teeth and am not new to this procedure or overly sensitive. Dang! As much as I loveeeee super white teeth- the pleasure is not worth the pain. I'm too "irritated" at this product right now to consider buying the lower strength. It should come with a surgeon generals warning- hazardous and "hell" on your gums!!

I have used four syringes of the opalescence 35% whitening gel and have yet to see any results. I got custom made trays from my dentist and bought a 4 pack of syringes on-line. My dentist sells them for 20.00 per syringe. I tried to bleach everyday however my teeth and gums started to get really sensitive. Over all I am really disappointed by this product. I spent 225.00 on custom trays and 20.00 on extra syringes and so far I feel like I got ripped off.

I had custom made trays done by my dentist, but he stopped selling Opalescence. Instead, I used the trays with 15% Opalescence purchased via Amazon. My dentist said best results were achieved with lower percentage bleach and by using them overnight. I purchased the 15% gel and put in the trays as recommended. I used the product for three months, and unfortunately I had no results. My teeth are no more whiter now than they were when I first started. Between the mold and gel, I am out over $200. On a positive note, I did not get any gum sensitivity and the product was very easy to use. It just didn't work :/ Anyone have any suggestions for another whitening product that has good results?

I've been using it for 14 days and I've noticed hardly any difference at all. I guess my teeth are a brighter yellow, but definitely not white or even close to white. I've been using it every day and have gone thru 4 syringes of the PF 15%, applying the solution over a time range of 1 - 4 hours per night. Too much time, too much effort, and not a lot of results. I've also experienced sensitivity, red gums, and shooting pains in certain teeth at times. I have 2 cups of coffee in the morning and after that water every day. I do not smoke. I don't drink red wine or anything else that could stain them that bad. I would expect better results than this. I'm going to take it back to my dentist and get a partial refund which they have OK'ed already, as I'm their first complaint!

I have used this product for about 12 hours over a 7 day period and I haven't noticed any difference in color of teeth.

I have had problems with moderate to severe gum pain when the bleaching trays are in. Also, have had some blisters on my gums after use. I cannot get a toothbrush anywher near my gums after using. It is extremely painful.

I stopped using it for a couple of days to let my gums heal and I may try it again today to see if it's any better. I have a checkup scheduled with my dentist today and I will see what he recommends.

I have been using SP 15 for 12 days now (on my 4th syringe) overnight and have noticed no results at all, apart from that they are slightly brighter but not lighter. My dentist believed it would make a difference. I don't drink coffee, tea, wine or smoke etc. I'm experiencing sensitivity and throbbing in all of my teeth. It seems to be working for everyone else but not for me.

Product really frustrating and difficult to use. The thickness of the gel makes it difficult to place where you want and the amount you want. If I put on gel enough to come off the tube it causes sensitivity because there is too much. When I think I have gotten on the right amount and cut it off it follows to the next place. It would be nice if the consistency would allow movement from one to the next easily. Will struggle through since already paid for but will never use again even if it works in the end.

This product is a waste. I guess it worked a little bit the it's pretty rediculous that you have to go to your dentist to get a mouth piece just so you can use this. Pay for this product and pay for a mouth piece. WASTED MONEY. I wont reccommend this product to anyone.

I have been using product for 10 days (gone through 3 tubes). Seems like it is taking forever! I have noticed a slight change, but not significant and my teeth weren't that bad to begin with. I didn't really get any instructions....can you still drink coffee while bleaching? And do your teeth continue to get whiter after treatment?

I used the 35% not knowing that it was the strongest. My dentist had told me to leave them in for 3 hours at a time! I looked online after having them on for 40 min and couldnt take it anymore- and everyone says to leave them on only for a half hour max!! I see a tiny difference after this one use, and i really want to continue but i got terrible shooting pains through one tooth and my gums were stinging! Anyone else have an okay time with the 35% or should I ask for the less intense one??

I received my custom trays yesterday, and I am using 15%. The first time I tried it I felt no sensitivity, which I thought I did something wrong like not use enough of the gel but I did like my dentist told me, just one line all the way around my upper and lower trays. I saw no result from one time, probably because I didn't use enough gel. My dentist told me to leave them in for 2-2 1/2 hours everyday and not to sleep with them because I could swallow or or chew on them at night. Today is the second day I am using my trays and gel and this time I put a little more gel. I made sure I didn't have any gel left over because I was afraid of sensitivity. I did feel some mild sensitivity but that went away after a few hours. Today I did see a little change of color on my front teeth, the sides are harder to bleach for me because they are a shade darker then the front (my dentist said I have multi-color shades). My set was 198$ I know that other people paid less but my custom trays fit really good and I don't have any gel run over (just once I put to much and I felt it on my gums...ooops). I read a lot of positive reviews on this product so I decided to give it a try. I hope it works for me, I am a bit un-patient with results but my dentist said that I get the same results with 15% as I would with 35% and it is much lighter on the gums which is better for my teeth. After my two months supply is up, I will purchase the 15% from amazon which I found to have the cheapest refill syringes than going through my dentist. Once I get better results I will post before and after pictures. I found these reviews very helpful and thought I'd share my experience with this product!

We do at least 100 whitening treatments per month. I have personally used most professional teeth whitening brands out there. Starting from Zoom to Opalescence and other brands.
Opalescence is not any different compared to others. People have to remember that the main ingredient responsible for whitening is Hydrogen Peroxide or Carbamide Peroxide. The higher the concentration of this ingredient in the whitening gel the better results and the higher the risk for sensitivity.
In my opinion the only thing that can make a difference between a Zoom product 25% HP and an Opalescence product 25% HP is the purity of the HP ingredient, which depends on the way they extract it. All the rest in my experience as a dental professional with extensive knowledge and experience in teeth whitening treatments, is non sense.
I have tried both Opalescence and other products on the same patient in a 6 months recall time. Patient was sensitive with both products. This leads me to believe that the so called "anti sensitivity properties" that all companies claim, are just for marketing purposes.

I used the 15% and got fair results. I did not drink tea, only coffee, during treatment period and I would use overnite-every night. I saw better results in the beginning, but I think the coffee reduced the whitening. My dentist said wait 24 hrs before drinking coffee, and don't drink hot coffee.
I had trouble putting the small amount in the trays and when it overloaded that is when I had sensitivity.
I will try again-using 20% overnite-every other day and wait 24 hrs to drink coffee, and drink iced coffee. I wish I could give up the coffee-but I can't!No tea was hard enough!
I had a little sensitivity-but Sensodyne toothpaste helped.

My dentist office offers free whitening for life as an incentive if you get your semi annual check ups on time so I paid nothing. I got free custom made trays as well as 2 free syringes of the Opalescence 35%. The first day I experienced A LOT of pain on my gums from the gel. Note: if you experience any gum pain, you've used too much!!! You only need a tiny little dab and when you put your trays on, it should distribute on your teeth. I am now on my 4th day and almost done with my first syringe and I haven't notice a huge difference. My teeth are slightly brighter but nothing dramatic. Also I've experienced a lot of snow capping (white spots) on my teeth and I'm hoping they'll go away because that is not cute! Lol! Hopefully I will see more improvement by the end of the second syringe. Another quick tip, do not leave it on for more than the recommended time! Especially the 35%! Hope everything works out!

I am trying the 15% for the first time tonight.. I got it for free actually. my dentist office never told me to refriderate them so the gel actually sat in my hot car for a few days. I got the custom made mouth trays they are pretty comfortable, no problems with them. I have been wearing the trays for about an hour now and my gums are definently stinging. I think I will do 4 hours and take them off. Considering this gel was sitting in my hot car for a few days im surprised it still works. Idk if it is safe swallowing this gel so I have been spitting in a cup. My lips are slightly stinging as well. Otherwise I will see how it does after 4 hours. I have sensdyne toothpaste that I think will help with the sensitivity afterwords. But excited to see the results!!! Best of luck!

It's been two weeks that I've used the 15% gel. Some sensitivity and a couple "shooting pains", but got through it. The color is improved, but not as much as I had hoped. Dentist had a special on this - $99 instead of $499. I had an initial in office gel treatment and then did some at home treatments 28 years ago and the results were much better - think that cost then was about $200. I would really like to know what the hygenist and dentist think about my results...did I get what they expected, they never indicated their thoughts on this other than I should get good results. As stated elsewhere on this website, results are based on hue, chroma and value... and also age.

I just started using the 15% solution 3 days ago...I wear the trays at night for approx 8hrs and I am noticing a huge difference so far! A little streaky but I know over time that will fade. One thing I do notice is the ZINGERS and sensitivity I do get from time to time. The horrible zingers I have had twice (one as we speak...now my enitre lower jaw is throbbing). Other than that, well worth it :)

I used it about two years ago after wasting so much money on over the counter whiteners. This was the only product that lightened my teeth, however, where the 'old' silver fillings are, those teeth did not get as white. Okay, because who wants to look fake! I have some left from two years ago and could use a restore, but don't know if it's safe. The tubes I received were from my dentist and there is no expiration date. I see from one post that someone uses it after two years. Anyone know if having three syringes is okay to use after two years?

I tried the Crest Whitestrips, but had to stop because they caused so much "zinging" pain & tooth sensitivity. I have used the Opalescence (15%) 5 times now (every other night). I am pleased with the results .... I don't have "hollywood" like white teeth, but my teeth are definitely whiter & brighter. I do notice a wee bit of sensitivity, but it is very tolerable and short lived. My brother recommended this product. He uses the stronger formula and his teeth are really, really white. I read that the 15% formula will work just as well, but just takes longer to achieve the same results as the more concentrated formula.

Great stuff, noticeable results almost immediately. A couple of notes for those who have had trouble:

- if your gums are turning white, burning or you can taste the solution, you are using too much gel.

- follow your dentist's instructions, which in my case differ from the manufacturer; i.e. using the 15% gel, wear twice a day for up to an hour at a time.

- brush out the trays and dry thoroughly after use: I use a can of compressed air to dry out completely.

- cutting out coffee and avoiding staining fruits will expedite the whitening process.

Good luck!

Im in my mid 40's and despite very good dental hygiene & not being a smoker my teeth have become discolored, almost a slite grey shade. After 8 days I am thrilled with my results, my teeth are now white and brite. The last few nights I did sleep with the trays in as reccomended by me dentist. I think for the price, $250. with the personalized trays made & the product, it was a good value.

This product works great. I too have very sensitive teeth and gums and I also had a reaction the first time that I used the product. But I noticed that there was alot of the gel coming out of the top of the custom trays that I had placed in my mouth. The next time I used alot less of the product and none of the gel managed to emerge from the trays. And guess what.....there was absolutely no reaction to using this product. My teeth are very yellow and it has always been very embarrasing for me. To the point that I would not show my teeth whenever I smiled. Now I am smiling very brightly, teeth showing every time. I use the 20% strength product because it just seemed more practical. It took years of unhealthy living for my teeth to become this yellow and it doesn't make sense to use the 35%(the strongest of the available gels) the first time I attempted to whiten my teeth. Stronger does not always mean better. I just went on the belief that it took years for my teeth to get this stained, using a super-strength gel to undo the damage quickly seemed ilogical. I felt like I would have better success gradually undoing the staining, with a lower strength gel, with consistant usage, as I gradually increase the time that I wear them. I love this product and I love the results. I would definately try this product again and I would recommend it to anyone who would GRADUALLY like to increase the whiteness of their teeth.

I have been using the 15% gel for a couple of weeks, but the pain is intense. It doesn't hurt until about half an hour after I remove the trays, then the pain increases over the next several hours, affecting all my teeth. The pain is so debilitating that I don't know whether I can continue the process. On the plus side, my teeth are significantly whiter than when I started.

I've used Opalescence twice now; it's the 30 minute tray version.

The second time I had a strange side effect. I actually had mild upper-chest pain.

Do you think I may have swallowed this stuff, or did it slither down into my esophagus? This is more than a bit disconcerting.

I have used whiteners from the dentist over the years. Last year when I purchased some (Opalescence) from the dentist I did not have a problem with any pain. Then last year when I used the remainder (kept it in the refrigerator) it left we with a very sore, red place on one place on my gum. I thought possibly it may be too old. I purchased a new container, used it a couple of times with just a little bead where each tooth is in the tray. My teeth were yellow near the gum line. Yesterday I bleached again and used more Opalescence so that the teeth at the gum line would whiten and my gums are terrible. At first when I took the trays out the pain was severe. They were kind of white with very places. Then last night they had a purple color a lot of places. Today many places are very red and raw with some little places being yellow. My teeth are white up to the gums but I hurt and pray my gums will heal. If anyone has an explanation, please give it. Also, it only happened on my upper gums; not the lower.

Like any whitening agent, OPAL will ONLY whiten your ENAMEL. the less enamel you have, or if it has been worn down over the years, it wont pick up the bleach. Which is why some people aren't seeing results or experiencing extreme pain, or spotting. I, like many others, experienced alot of sensitivity with this product when I wore it overnight because i have some enamel loss near the upper part of my teeth near the gums. i am using the 15%. The best way for me was to use it for about 1hour everyday or everyother day. and i got the same results and minimal to no sensitivity. overall this product really works considering that in 1 use you can get a shade whiter. :)

I started using this product (10%) about 3 years ago for a few months. I saw minimal to average results and had average sensitivity. I upped the dosage (35%) and started getting better results but the pain was too much if I used it too frequently. My teeth got pretty white and I got quite a few compliments. Its been almost 3 years and it's time to redo them, I've purchased the 20 and I'm sure it will work out good.

I've been using this product for about 4 years now. I used to be so self conscious about my teeth because of how yellow and dingy they were. I would always Photoshop my teeth to make them white in all of my pictures. After using Opalescence, I haven't even had to think about Photoshopping my pictures.

I try not to whiten them too often. Maybe once every 6 months. For me, it's incredibly painful to use. I can't keep it on for more than 2 hours or so, even if I pre-medicate with ibuprofen or Tylenol. There have been a few times where it oxidized my gums so badly that the skin around my teeth turned white and died and my gums were bleeing for about a week. I had to rinse with hydrogen peroxide and Magic Mouthwash every night just to keep them from getting infected and to stop the pain and swelling. Also, when I first remove the bleaching tray, I will have white spots all over my teeth, but those usually go away after a few hours.

Other than that, this is a great product. I don't appear to have any damage to my teeth, and they always look great afterwards.

I am currently using Opalescence 20 everyday (1 hour daily) and have been for a month. I am seeing very little results and also there is still yellowing by the gum line. How long until I see more impressive results?
