Nite White Review

The Nite White teeth whitening gel has gone through three revisions and is now on its third version: Nite White Excel 3 ACP. The bleaching gel uses a mixture of carbamide peroxide to whiten teeth. It is available in 10%, 16%, and 22% Carbamide Peroxide.

How does Nite White work?

The dual barrel syringe features two chambers - one separates a powerful and stabilized Carbamide Peroxide formula; the second chamber contains an activation gel with soothers, conditioners and desensitizers added. The gel is activiated through its auto-mixing nozzle precisely at the time of use for tooth whitening. Nite White uses a tray based system, so you will need a custom fitted tray to use this product (available at your local dentist).

Who manufactures the Nite White products?

Nite White and Day White are manufactured by Discus Dental.

Is there sensitivity with Nite White?

Some users might feel sensitivity with nite whitening. The sensitivity is caused by fluxing of O2&HCO2 ions through the dentinal tubules. If you are prone to sensitivity it is recommended to use a sensitivity toothpaste, like Sensodyne, for a week or two before you start whitening with Nite White. The other option is to use a desensitizing gel after whitening. (Read our article about teeth whitening sensitivity here.)

What is ACP Whitening?

Patented Calcium Phosphate is a formula that naturally bonds with the tooth surface to increase overall enamel smoothness and gloss, and reduce whitening fade-back (think enamel remineralization). Its rapid absorption into the teeth also functions to reduce transient sensitivity – this is an added benefit that is quite different from typical bleaching solutions.

What is the difference between the Z and ACP formulas of Nite White?

The Z formula has been replaced by the ACP formula. The Z formula contained Potassium Nitrate as a sensitivity reducer, however, it did not contain ACP. The ACP formula contains both ingredients to better control sensitivity problems that may arise during the bleaching process.

What is the difference between NiteWhite Excel & NiteWhite Excel Turbo?

Nite White Turbo is 6% hydrogen peroxide. Nite White Excel uses carbamide peroxide which is approximately 1/3 the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Therefore, 15% carbamide peroxide would be equivalent to 5% hydrogen peroxide.
Nite White Turbo can produce the same whitening results in 3 days that regular Excel can achieve in 7-10 days - making it roughly 50-70% stronger than regular Excel. Stronger gels typically create more sensitivity however, so the Turbo gel is recommended to only those who have used Nite White 16% or 22%.

Bottom line

The Nite White bleaching gel works well and will bring about excellent results. In comparison to Ultradent's Opalescence, a study done by Dr. Wm Browning of Medical College of GA found that there were no significant differences between Opalescence and NiteWhite Excel for the 10% formula.

Shelf Life: 6-12 months. Up to 2 years if refigerated.

This product did not whiten my teeth. The tooth pain I experienced was so excrutiating that I and my dentist agreed that I would stop using it. The tooth pain was so severe that extra strength Tylenol and Advil didn't help. I had prepped prior to beginning the process with a prescription toothpaste. It was a horrible experience.

Hi,
I cant rate this product but wondered:
Any hints on how to get the real custom trays in the UK? I have a NHS Dentist who simply wont provide them. Anyone in the UK have these supplied and if so, whom did you get them from, and how much can I expect to pay (2010)? Then I can try all these tooth whitening systems!!

I have never had sensitive teeth in my life, the first night I wore this I was woken up at least every hour from the spasms in my teeth and gums. The sensitivity lasted up to 3 days afterward. It was horrible, to the point where I was in tears (not just from the pain, but thinking "what am I doing to my teeth - surely I'm doing long-term damage??"). I made it through 4 of the 6 tubes then couldn't go any further. The gel didn't whiten my teeth evenly, so they appeared to be speckled. My dentist was surprised at my reaction. Two months on, I'm relieved my teeth are no longer sensitive. My friend advised me to buy White Glo Whitening Pack from the supermarket at $15AUD, the results are better and no sensitivity at all and you only have to wear the solution for 5 minutes!

As soon as I started using this product, my teeth went really patchy like some kind of chemical reaction! On a couple of teeth, there were blotches of extreme whiteness and then dirty colour on the the rest of the tooth. I had the whitening done through my orthodontist, as after having my braces removed I noticed my teeth had stains where the brackets were.

Now 4 weeks later, the patches are fading accept one stubborn bit, but the teeth now are a blueish / green white colour?? This product has caused me more worry and self consiousness.
I'm now using recaldent teeth moose to even out the colour & reverse any damage to the enamel. I'm warning all people don't make the mistake I have.

I just used it one night for 4 hrs with the 22% with no sensitivity at all, I ended up with some splotches on my two front teeth which have scared me into not wanting to try it again. I'm not sure if I will be able to get rid of the splotches if I continue. Will they stay or should I discontinue use?

I did not have particularly sensitive teeth before using this product. I paid £250 at a dentist and was a little wary of using a product at home even with specially made trays. The dentist recommended wearing overnight so on the first night I did and my teeth seemed fine no sensitivity at all but the whiteness was a little patchy I put this down to it being my first try so continued for the next few nights. By the fourth night the minute the gel even came near my teeth/gums I was in agony like it was burning I gave myself a few days off and used sensodyne but still every time the gel touched my mouth it burned to the point that I had to take the trays out. My teeth even after the four nights aren't as white as I'd like them and I totally regret paying £250 for something that caused me nothing but pain and discomfort. *thumbs down* :(

I have been using Nite White, as recommended by my dentist. It cost me £350, so was not affordable... however maybe buying elsewhere would've been a better option. I experienced no pain at first on using the product, however, each application became more and more painful. After the last application, I noticed the most painful tooth felt different with my tongue, and on inspection discovered that it now has 3 holes in it... My teeth are whiter, but the whiteness is streaky and in patches. I will never be using this product again and urge you to go down other avenues, I wish I had never used the product and had got them whitened in surgery instead.

At my hygienist's advice, I used the product for less than an hour at a time and it really whitened my teeth with only a little pain. However, after a few (5-6) uses I got ugly streaks of gray on my bottom front teeth and a few other spots. I thought I was loosing enamel, but apparently using the product makes teeth more porous for the duration of treatment and my colorful diet (berries, salads, herbal teas) stained some parts of my teeth. The dentist polished them off today, and I will not use this on my bottom teeth again. However, after paying $250 I will use it on the top teeth when I have a special event to attend. Then I'm back to Crest strips, which worked fine for me.

Dear Keyla,

You are absolutely correct. You need to stop the product. The reason is that when you are using custom trays and you add a drop of peroxide then the drop is spread in different thickness. If you start with any splotches please stop immediately because if you continue using it then this part of tooth will be whiter and will not be nice. It is very hard to start without splotches unless you use 16-18%. But i had patients with 16-18% who did not see any difference.

The solution to your problem is to stop using the product until you will have common colour of the tooth. This can take 2 to 3 weeks for full colour restore.
After this go back to your dentist and ask for a zoom whiting method so you can apply peroxide by plasma injection smoothly in all surface of your tooth with the same amount. "Some people can use the trays without splotches" sorry but this not true. And especially the 22% will leave sure white line on the tooth.

regards Dr.Steve

I've been using it for 2 month now and my teeth is somewhat whiter. I am disappointed that the shade is uneven. The biting edge is noticeably whiter that the gum area. I wished my dentist had told me that before hand but then again, she's there to make money. This was stated in the booklet though.

I paid 350.00 with the custom tray which came with 6 syringes but then each syringe is 20.00 each after that. I wouldn't do it again. The next time I think I will try Zoom to get instant result. After buying a few extra syringes, it adds up to be the same and I don't have to waste time wearing the tray every night.

I used it for 2 nights, was supposed to use it 9 nights.... on night 1 i woke up in the middle of the night with horrible sharp pain in 2 teeth, and the next day was sensitive to breathing in cold air. Night 2 was much worse, I woke up at least 10 times during the night to very bad sharp pains and my teeth have been very sensitive since. I quit using the product and will not try it again. Although I will say, just after the 2 nights i can tell a slight difference in my teeth, if i could have continued on with the product i believe it would have made a huge difference.

I used NiteWhite ACP 16% a couple of mounths ago and although it took a little pain, I am now going to use it again. After 2-3 nights I noticed that my teeth got somehow lighter. I then went on for about a week and I was really happy with the result. I actually just wanted them to "lighten up" a little not to go totally white but this time I'm probably going to get them slightly whiter (I think the effect lasted around 3 months).

Regarding the pain my dentist told me to best use a simple toothpaste. I also noticed that the pain is a lot less when I brush my teeth some hours before I put the trays with the gel in (before I brushed my teeth and used the gel right before I went to bed). Also I started to use them only every second days.

When I noticed that the more yellow parts close to the gums takes longer to whiten I started to apply the gel only on those regions on the trays and I am a lot more satisfied now.

I recommend it and if you find your own way to use it so that it hurts less, there won't be any downside to it anymore.

For the first kit with 8 syringes and trays done I paid $159. Now I I just ordered 8 more (this time 22% to use only an hour a time) for $24.

I'll keep you posted!

I've been using this product since July 26th, only skipping a few nights due to sensitivity. Today is August 21 and I'm kind of disappointed that my teeth have only whitened a couple of levels at most. They're somewhat whiter but I was expecting more after going through four syringes of the product and paying the dentist $100 for the kit. Just started on the fifth syringe and will stop when I'm done. Hoping for a better outcome with probably one more week of whitening. We'll see. I'm sure not one of those folks who say their teeth whitened dramatically after only a few treatments. I'm almost at the end of my fourth week. They should be a lot whiter by now in my opinion.

I paid £300 pounds from my dentist and was surprised it was a diy kit.
The dentist said tea coffee and red wine wouldn't affect my teeth when they were whitened but a few weeks on my teeth are going yellow again.
Having seen prices of Nite White online, my feeling that I've been ripped off are confirmed.

Hi.
So I started using this product yesterday (I have used it twice so far), and so far I have gotten some sensitivity on lower teeth, some splotches, and a stain on one of my front teeth I have never seen before. I obviously will stop until I talk to my dentist, but I am concerned as to if the splotches will fade because my smile is one of my main features.

This product is said to be at it's peak when the gel from both tube get mixed together in the mixing tip.

Is it ok to use the leftover mixed gel in the tube for the next application the next day ? Will it still be effective and perform at it's peak ? Will placing it in the fridge help maintain it's effectiveness?

If not, how do you remove all the left over gel from the mixing tip?

Thanks!

ive been using this product for about 6 months whenever I feel my smile needs a little brightening. I didnt find the trays necessary i boiled mouthguards instead and in conjunction with the product I use a light. My light source is either a tanning bed, I cover my face aside from my mouth and use CLEAR mouth guards or from an as seen on tv product bright white (which also works surprisingly well and VERY cost efficient) as far as sensitivity goes yea, it hurts. but beauty is pain. Get veneers if its that much of an issue to you

I've been using Nite White 3 for last week now and notice an improvement. I've had white teeth prior to using this product, but it's even more white and more evenly white across my entire mouth, not just the fronts lol

I'm using 22% so there is some sensitivity, but nothing too painful. I use Synsodyne toothpaste before and after my treatment with my trays. I go back to the dentist in about a week for a follow up.

I recommend this product even though it's a big cost upfront with the custom trays.

My wife keeps commenting on how white my teeth are :)

I have been using Nite White for a few months now and have had excellent results. My dentist made custom trays and sent me home with this product to use in my home. It works very well! I have very sensitive teeth, so it is important that I do not fill the custom trays my dentist made for me too full, otherwise the gel will get on my gums and they become very iritated. I would have to rate this product very high for the price!!

i had a zoom 2 whiteing session done at my dentist and got a 18 day supply free at my dentist.. the custom made trays fit perfect.. i would advise first time users to really take time and care in filling the trays because contact with gums and soft tissue can and will cause irratation.. everyones teeth will react different to the gel in terms of pain depending on how sensitive your teeth normally are my teeth eased after several hours but after about 5 sessions i had to have some acp relief gel from my dentist.. my opinion: this product will achieve a noticable change in your teeths whiteness

I was amazed by the results.

Nite White ACP (22%) + plus custom trays by dentist

just small intro , im 46 yr, smoked before, drank a lot of coke, tea, all stuff that's not good for you.
it was time to do it.
my wife had very good results, but only after her friend told her to sleep overnight with trays.

So I followed the advice, got trays, put gel in it, whipped off excess gel.
Slept with them overnight. it's almost three weeks. Teeth sensitivity and z-ing feeling on them during trays, I can tolerate.
On other hand, gums went crazy, sore, painful, it's like 10th century torture device. (my wife's comment: you see what women do for beauty!!!)

I had to take two times break, my gums were too sore. (I think I put too much gel). I tried day time that is much stronger and that I can not do. (rome is burning!!!)

Now I am trying to put less gel, it's more tolerable, but it's very painful for me.

I am including photo after 16th day(minus 2 time one day break for sore gums).
- due to whitenning gums recede and shows more of the tooth, more yellow (top part of the tooth).
-that yellow part is also harder to whiten.
- grow up in Europe, we probably have used the antibiotic that grayed our bones, that you can see on my bottom teeth(edges), this also will be harder to whiten.
- also you can see my gums are red and sore.

to sum up: Everybody is different with sensitivity. My wife wore these things much shorter and she has much more consistent results, whiter teeth.

I still feel I have a long way to go, to accomplish this whitening process.

Also I had to buy more gel tubes (need more to continue), but if it's something like my case, it might need to do both, custom tray for home and also in office whitening as well.

It works but it's not easy!!!

To recap here is the photo after 23 days ( including breaks).

It's really hard to see, since it's taken with iphone. If you compare the picture from the first post and this one. You will see slight difference in the white shade on the teeth.
note: when I compared them the first time, I didn't see any difference between them.

it's not easy on my gums, but there is no point of stopping now.

I used first an Opalescence kit 15% 4 syringes with custom dentist tray for about 10 days 4 hours b4 go to sleep.
The result was good but not very satisfactory, that was not the white that I was looking for I wanted whiter than that...Also it was very painful, that I was about to ask God to send to the future in every single application so the time would pass fast...Then I could figure out that the popular expression "No pain no Gain" was true hahaha :D
I'm in my early 30's, smoker and my whole life had soft drinks mede of cola and lately coffee to keep me up.
Now I am using the Nitewhite 10%... What a relief, I am using overnight, there's no pain and the result I reckon that is very Impressive, more than I was expect, I can clearly see my teeth getting whiter and whiter.
I recommend to use a 10% one, you have to do for more time but u do not suffer that much

Shame that I dont have a pic to show off!! But believe me it worth it !!!

Yes, it works. But seriously? With this much intense pain after only two days, I can't imagine my teeth looking bad enough where this is worth it. Sure, it's nice to have white teeth, but is it really worth the intense pain I'm feeling at this very moment? Nope. Not even a little. This stuff hurts. Like, bad. Maybe I'll try it for a day at a time each week, or maybe even each month, but I am not doing this for any extended period of time ever again. After day one, there was a very slight pain, but this morning I woke up in serious pain due to Nite White and it has been hard to get through my classes all day. I have an exam tonight and I'm pretty sure the pain will not be gone by then.
Two Aspirins and an Advil later, I'm still in intense pain.
Thanks a ton, Nite White, killing my grades, but BOY do my teeth shine.

This is my third night of using the night time one at 17%. Have felt random sharp pain in the nerve/tips of my lower teeth mostly. Sometimes its a cripling unbearable pain that only lasts about 5 seconds. Eating chocolate also causes it to hurt a bit. have noticed it to be whiter already but definately am going to wait out the 2 weeks. If you miss a day, it doesnt matter, as long as you do it for 14 days, it doesnt have to be consecutive.

Mine was on special for $199 for the tray and 6 syringes. usually $500

They do seem to leave white dots or lines where the gel sat on my teeth. But it cleared up after 2 more nights. The pain was intolerable at one point in time and I stopped using it for a day. I would recommend this product to anyone looking to whiten their teeth effectively and quickly.

As advised by the dentist, I used 16% Nite White ACP, but only 3 times per week. There was hardly any discomfort, certainly no pain. After 14 treatments my teeth were at least 3 shades whiter and I am very pleased with the outcome.

6 months later I had a further 3 treatments just to refresh the smile. Again, there was no negative reaction.

I am happy with the product (I can't blame the product for the high charges by the dentist)

I purchased nite white from my Dentist and had custom trays made. The trays are good and after 2 weeks of almost consistent wearing my teeth have whitened apart from the gumline of my bottom teeth. I will have to continue with the bottom teeth a while longer although it is hard to localise the gell on this area. I think the product is over priced at the dentist, I note you can buy it cheaper online but as I have experienced sensitivity I want the support of my dentist just in case!
To get whiter, brighter teeth I think this product is good but wonder why in this day and age of medical advancement, we can't obtain whiter teeth without the pain.

It all depends what kind of teeth you have. If you are young and you have near perfect teeth, that just could do with a bit of lightening, then that is what you will get and you will be very happy very quickly.

Where like me your teeth have darkened with age, this will indeed make them several shades lighter, and will doubtless be very impressive, but it is not actual whitening. It is in fact teeth lightening which should be the proper description.

Those pictures you see of the models with perfect teeth have not got it through teeth whitening products. They have git it through veneers costing thousands and that is what you will have to do if you want the perfect film star teeth.

As well as this, if you have crowns, they will not lighten with the treatment so there is that difference as well.

That being said I enjoyed using it very much. My teeth actually looked a little lighter after the first treatment. A week later a friend said that I had done enough, I did not need to bother anymore, they were so good. Very flattering.

I was given the twenty-two per cent which you only need keep in for under an hour. If, because of sensitivity, your dentist gives you the sixteen per cent or lower, you have to keep the tray in your mouth over night.

Three years later it is still quite good but I am having another go as a top up.

Nite White 16%. I am on the 12th day. I am disappointed with the results so far and hope that after the recommended 3 weeks of use by my dentist it will produce the results I was expecting. Sensitivity has been almost nothing, not even worth mentioning here. Using Sensodyne since a week before I started is probably helping. My teeth have whitened some, depends on what light I am in. Seem to look whiter in natural outdoor light than inside looking in a mirror. Definitely not "refrigerator" white like the celebrities on TV. LOL I was going to do the Zoom whitening in the office but dentist talked me out of it saying it can be, and usually is extremely painful. Also you have more control using the Nite White route.

The best way is to have your teeth Zoom(or another laser/UV system) whitened first. This is only about £100(150 US Dollars). Then use Nite-white
every few months as a 'top-up'. 22% is the best but can cause discomfort
if you have very sensitive teeth. But it is only an hour! Sorry, but NO PAIN, NO GAIN ! By buying on-line it's a very affordable system. Both my wife and I use it this way and it has worked excellently. You just have to brace yourself for the initial cost to your dentist/tooth specialist.
p.s. I suspect the blotches mentioned by some people are because they didn't have a professional system done first. Consequently, hard, deep stains will take a while with just pure chemical treatment.

I have been a dental hygienist for over 25 years and have watched the evolution of home dental whitening.

In our practice, we have been using the Discus products (Day White/Nite White) for a number of years. Prior to that time we tried several others. We have generally been very happy with the Discus results.

Due to different types of tooth staining, porosity of the enamel, and patient sensitivity, results can vary. Teeth with a grayish tone will not respond as well as those with a yellowish tint. If patients can't tolerate the bleaching material or trays (only custom trays are going to give the best result) that's going to be a problem.

As mentioned by others on this site, it is important to use a sensitivity toothpaste prior to beginning the bleaching process. Better yet, use the tooth paste and a flouride rinse (such as J&J ACT) .This closes the dentinal tubules that run from the surface of the tooth to the pulp. Continue this thoughout the bleaching process. Better yet, continue to use a daily fluoride rinse to guard against tooth decay. After inserting the trays remove any excess bleach from the gumline otherwise you will have sensitivity and inflammation.

The blotching and irregularity of the enamel color should improve with several applications and after bleaching is completed as the teeth rehydrate. Remember that whitening has a very limited effect on white, compsite fillings.

Don't consider bleaching a "one shot deal". You will probably need occasional touch-ups especiallyif you drink coffee, tea, red wineor use tobacco products.
Also, for best results try limit these during the bleaching process. Your teeth will be more porous during that time.

We have the ZOOM light in our practice but only do this procedure if the patient absolutely insists. Although it increases our chair productivity, patients tend to experience much more sensitivity and are less than satisfied...and for touch-ups they still need to use the in-home trays. It is more costly and produces the same results as custom trays with a good bleaching product, just faster.

Don't overuse these products. Not only for the health of your teeth but so that you have a natural, attractive smile. Overuse causes a chaulky, fake look...I can pick out a bleaching "abuser" from across a room. Just as we have different hair shades and skin tones, there are many shades of tooth enamel. There is only so much we can do to change that without going to costly veneers.

I hope this information will help someone.
